autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Axter\u2019s motor, apparently a small <a href=\"http:\/\/www.enstroj.si\/\">Enstroj unit<\/a>, adds a measure of protection for even the most ill-timed sudden stoppage. \u00a0Andr\u00e9s Barrado, head of the UC3M Electric Power Systems group explains, \u201cIf there is a problem with the main engine, this electric engine will start to function, which will provide an additional range of about 20 kilometers, enough for the pilot to land safely.\u201d \u00a0As <em>Gizmag <\/em>noted, that may not seem like much, but adding a 12 mile radius to the emergency landing options is a huge chance to set down safely on a runway, rather than a road or recently tilled field.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nuevo sistema el\u00e9ctrico de propulsi\u00f3n para mejorar la seguridad en aviaci\u00f3n ligera\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1q52gy6HEz8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Judging from the system schematic shown on the video, the weight of the battery is positioned to offset the additional 9.3 kilograms (20.5 pounds) the motor adds to the forward moment arm.\u00a0 This could be a potential problem in terms of maintaining balance on the aircraft\u2019s crankshaft, with the motor squeezed in between the propeller hub and the propeller.\u00a0 Luckily, the motor\u2019s small diameter allows it to be hidden by a suitable propeller spinner.<\/p>\n<p>The Axter system feeds energy to the battery pack so that it is always charge and ready to take over.\u00a0 It also can add power during takeoff or long climbs.\u00a0 This can be helpful in high density altitude situations where the motor\u2019s indifference to thin air would be most welcome. \u00a0Axter\u2019s Daniel Cristobal, another alum of UC3M, explains, \u201cWe maximize the battery capacity to generate motion with the electric motor and have found that we can use as a hybrid system for light aircraft: the pilot can operate at any time, adding up to 40 additional horses for takeoffs or [other] need[s].&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10017\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/axter-emergency-electric-engine-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10017\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10017\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/axter-emergency-electric-engine-3-528x336.jpg\" alt=\"Positions of components added in Axter's system.
