{"id":10033,"date":"2015-06-16T10:27:05","date_gmt":"2015-06-16T17:27:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=10033"},"modified":"2015-06-16T10:27:05","modified_gmt":"2015-06-16T17:27:05","slug":"kaner-el-kady-explore-new-areas-energy-storage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/kaner-el-kady-explore-new-areas-energy-storage\/","title":{"rendered":"Kaner and El-Kady Explore New Areas of Energy Storage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now here\u2019s a mission statement.\u00a0 \u201cEngineering three-dimensional hybrid supercapacitors and microsupercapacitors for high-performance integrated energy storage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conventional wisdom says that super and ultracapacitors don\u2019t have the energy storage of batteries, and even given their outstanding ability to deliver power at high levels pretty much instantly, will never be able to run an electric vehicle for extended periods.\u00a0\u00a0 So many researchers, with the notable exception of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chemistry.ucla.edu\/directory\/kaner-richard-b\">Dr. Richard Kaner <\/a>and graduate student <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=lbZU1JIAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">Maher El-Kady<\/a> at UCLA have turned their attention to batteries, and not capacitors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10034\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ucla-storage-device.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10034\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10034\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ucla-storage-device-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"Breadboarded project looks like home-made science fair project, but is far more sophisticated\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ucla-storage-device-528x351.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ucla-storage-device-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/ucla-storage-device.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Breadboarded project looks like home-made science fair project, but is far more sophisticated<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They recognize that electronic devices have improved immensely over the past decades, but \u201cthe slow pace of battery development has held back technological progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking to synthesize rather than differentiate, the two California NanoSystems Institute researchers have \u201csuccessfully combined two nanomaterials to create a new energy storage medium that combines the best qualities of batteries and supercapacitors,\u201d according to their <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/ucla-scientists-create-quick-charging-hybrid-supercapacitors\">UCLA Newsroom announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hybrid Supercapacitor\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2P7xvnNeOUQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Their combined components can charge in seconds and be used for \u201cmore than 10,000 recharge cycles,\u201d essentially a lifetime battery with over 27 years of daily recharges.\u00a0 The researchers admit to a major failing, though.\u00a0 The hybrid supercapacitor normally can\u2019t store enough energy to run our electronic devices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2015\/03\/20\/1420398112.full.pdf\">Their study<\/a>, \u201cEngineering three-dimensional hybrid supercapacitors and microsupercapacitors for high-performance integrated energy storage,\u201d was published in the <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/em>. Co-authors include Maher F. El-Kady,\u00a0Melanie Ihns, Mengping Li,\u00a0Jee Youn Hwang, Mir F. Mousavi,\u00a0Lindsay Chaney, Andrew T. Lech,\u00a0and\u00a0Richard B. Kaner.<\/p>\n<p>Although the current device exhibits energy density equivalent to lead-acid batteries, that\u2019s not yet good enough for electric vehicle use.\u00a0 El-Kady remains optimistic, \u201cThe microsupercapacitor is a new evolving configuration, a very small rechargeable power source with a much higher capacity than previous lithium thin-film microbatteries,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hybrid storage device combines laser-scribed graphene, or LSG with manganese dioxide.\u00a0 LSG can hold an electrical charge, is very conductive, and charges and recharges very quickly.\u00a0 It\u2019s used in alkaline batteries because of its capacity to hold a charge and its inexpensive abundance.<\/p>\n<p>According to UCLA, \u201cThey can be fabricated without the need for extreme temperatures or the expensive \u2018dry rooms\u2019 required to produce today\u2019s\u00a0supercapacitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaner and El-Kady found the supercapacitor could quickly store the electrical charge from a solar cell during the day, hold that charge and then power an LED overnight.\u00a0 This would be useful for off-grid lighting of all kinds, but shows the potential of the supercapacitor as an energy storage device.<\/p>\n<p>Kaner explains, \u201cThe LSG\u2013manganese-dioxide\u00a0capacitors can store as much electrical charge as a lead acid battery, yet can be recharged in seconds, and they store about six times the capacity of state-of-the-art commercially available supercapacitors.\u00a0 This scalable approach for fabricating compact, reliable, energy-dense supercapacitors shows a great deal of promise in real-world applications, and we\u2019re very excited about the possibilities for greatly improving personal electronics technology in the near future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their research led the CNSI scientists to device a microsupercapacitor small enough to fit in wearable or implantable devices.\u00a0 Even though it\u2019s only one-fifth the thickness of a sheet of paper, it can hold more than twice the charge of a typical thin-film lithium battery.<\/p>\n<p>Kaner adds, \u201cLet\u2019s say you wanted to put a small amount of electrical current into an adhesive bandage for drug release or healing assistance technology.\u00a0 The microsupercapacitor is so thin you could put it inside the bandage to supply the current.
