Everest and crossing the English Channel.\u00a0 Gerard Thevenot flew the Channel under a La Mouette wing powered by an Eck\/Geiger motor driven by three fuel cells in 2009 \u2013 six years before the recent flights with faster electric craft.\u00a0 For that matter, Paul MacCready and his team flew a solar-powered aircraft from near Paris to an RAF runway on the eastern English coast in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Hang gliders, paramotors, and other rigid and non-rigid-wing craft might benefit from new sailcloth that incorporates flexible solar cells into its makeup.\u00a0 Used on sailboats, the solar fabric helps run auxiliary motors and can help extend the cruising range of a boat when the sails are furled.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10357\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails_thin_PVfilm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10357\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10357\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails_thin_PVfilm-528x322.jpg\" alt=\"65-micron thick flexible solar cells hold up to rough handling, weather encountered in sailing\" width=\"528\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails_thin_PVfilm-528x322.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails_thin_PVfilm-300x183.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails_thin_PVfilm.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10357\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">65-micron thick flexible solar cells hold up to rough handling, weather encountered in sailing<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A French company named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uksailmakers.com\/News\/SAIL-POWER-MEETS-SOLAR-POWER_1_793.html\">UK Sailmakers France<\/a> has started a new company, SolarClothSystem\u00ae, to make mainsails with \u201ca film containing high efficiency photovoltaic cells.\u201d\u00a0 The solar cells can be used on sails that will be rolled or folded, as happens a great deal on most sailboats.\u00a0 SolarClothSystem cells are printed on a 65-micron (0.0026-inch) thick film in a roll-to-roll manufacturing process.<\/p>\n<p>These flexible cells can be laminated into a new Titanium sail (made by UK Sailmakers in their French plant), or bonded to both sides of an existing sail.\u00a0 Despite their flexibility, the cells will be installed only on mainsails do not get \u201cthrashed\u201d as Genoas (those sails on the front of\u00a0racing sailboats that billow out in high winds), do when the boat changes directions (tacks).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10358\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10358\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10358\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails-3-528x264.jpg\" alt=\"Placement of solar cells on sail - can be on both sides\" width=\"528\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails-3-528x264.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails-3-300x150.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/solar-sails-3.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Placement of solar cells on sail &#8211; can be on both sides<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tissusolaire.com\/nos-savoirs-faire\">dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) <\/a>are composed of 26 cells, covering one by two meters, with an energy output of 200 Watts per square meter.\u00a0 That output is classified as \u201cin season,\u201d which one might assume is sailing season.\u00a0 An even greater output of 290 Watts per square meter comes from a Marseille reference, assuming a more southerly brightness.\u00a0 The sail material can send a maximum of 19.2 Volts motor- or battery-ward, controlled by an \u201celectronic regulator.\u201d \u00a0This suggests a higher-than-average efficiency for DSSCs.<\/p>\n<p>SolarCloth explains, \u201cThe electricity will be transferred to the boat\u2019s batteries by wire and silver paste circuitry inside the laminate. In cases where the panels are bonded to the outside of a finished sail, the connecting wire will run under a Dacron tape.\u201d\u00a0 This seems appropriate for similar cloth on hang gliders, paramotors or even ultralight gliders such as a Sandlin Goat or BUG.<\/p>\n<p>The cloth could even be place on the underside of a hang-glider\u2019s wing or paramotor parachute, since the manufacturer claims the cloth works well in low-light and at less-than-optimum angles.<br \/>\nOne yachtsman had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uksailmakers.com\/News\/UK-POWERS-FIRST-ZERO-EMISSIONS-YACHT_1_813.html\">seven square meters of solar sails installed on both sides of the top of his main sail.<\/a>\u00a0 Alain Janet, owner of UK Sailmakers France, claims that this array will generate an average of 1,000 watts (1kW). According to Janet, \u201cModern thin-film photovoltaic cells do not need direct sunlight to generate electricity. In fact, the panels on the sail opposite the sun will generate 30-40 percent of their maximum output with the indirect and reflected light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the singlehanded Route du Rhum race in Nov. 2014, over 3,700 nautical miles from France to Guadeloupe, Daniel Ecalard used the PowerSails system on his Open 50 Defi Martinique, reefing the sails on 18 of the 25 days at sea.
