{"id":10513,"date":"2015-11-02T23:57:01","date_gmt":"2015-11-03T06:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=10513"},"modified":"2015-12-13T22:19:50","modified_gmt":"2015-12-14T05:19:50","slug":"traversing-australia-on-sunshine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/traversing-australia-on-sunshine\/","title":{"rendered":"Traversing Australia on Sunshine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia supplies 3,000 kilometers (1,860 miles) of smooth road and abundant sunshine every year for the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge\u00a0that bisects the country north to south.\u00a0 Growing in numbers annually, this year\u2019s five-day race drew 47 teams from 25 countries, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenoptimistic.com\/dutch-teams-dominate-world-solar-challenge-2015-20151022\/#.VjY4xrerSM8\">two teams from the Netherlands<\/a>,\u00a0 one from the University of Michigan in the United States and one from Tokai University in Japan trading the lead almost daily and battling it out for the first four places in the Challenger Class with daily consistency.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10516\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/transaustrali-solar-team-twente.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10516\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10516\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/transaustrali-solar-team-twente-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"Solar Team Twente', a very close second-place finisher\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/transaustrali-solar-team-twente-528x352.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/transaustrali-solar-team-twente-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/transaustrali-solar-team-twente.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Solar Team Twente, a very close second-place finisher<\/p><\/div>\n<p>University of Delft students had their second win in two years, while rivals from the University of Twente (the Netherlands) achieved a very strong second place overall.\u00a0 The University of Michigan\u2019s team was a consistent third-place contender, only to be bested at the end by Tokai\u2019s final sprint.\u00a0 Even at 3,000 kilometers, Nuon and Solar Team Twente were just over two and a half minutes apart.\u00a0 Delft\u2019s car traveled the 3002 kilometers in 37 hours, 56 minutes and 12 seconds, an average of 91.75 kilometers per hour (56.885 mph).<\/p>\n<p>Teams included a goodly contingent of people beside the drivers.\u00a0 Rules require at least the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Team Manager.<\/li>\n<li>An interpreter if the Team Manager is not proficient in English. (Is that so the team can understand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upfromaustralia.com\/aussieslang.html\">Australian \u2013 or Strine,<\/a> as it\u2019s sometimes called?)<\/li>\n<li>At least two and at most four Solar EV drivers.<\/li>\n<li>At most eight registered Solar EV passengers (for Cruiser Class).<\/li>\n<li>A Safety Officer.<\/li>\n<li>A Battery Officer.<\/li>\n<li>At least two drivers for each team support vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shipping a car and up to 17 support personnel to the Land of Oz is a challenge in itself.\u00a0 Meeting the stringent rules is another.\u00a0 Cars race in at least three classes \u2013 Challenger, Cruiser, and Adventure Class, with the possibility of an Evolutions Class involving entries from previous races if the race organizer agrees to allow their entry. \u00a0\u00a0No one participated in the Evolution class this year.<\/p>\n<p>You can see examples of each class in the video.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Daily Report 19 \u2013 2015 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lbJUniBp1mY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Most wonderfully, only two Challenger teams did not finish this year, and all those who did make it to Adelaide posted creditable times, with 20 making the entire run on solar power and nine being towed varying distances. \u00a0Several days saw speeds over 100 kilometers per hour, or 62 mph. This level of performance from creations by student teams shows the learning curve is being shared to everyone\u2019s benefit.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Daily Report 20 \u2013 2015 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rYkhsVj0k_A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Cruiser class cars vary more in configuration, from twin-hulled catamaran types to fairly conventional sports coupes, all stressing greater practicality, cabin space and comfort than the outright competition-oriented Challenger Class machines.\u00a0 Five of the 12 entrants in this class made it all the way on solar energy.\u00a0 Entrants ranged from Poland to Iran to Indonesia to home country Australian favorites.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarteameindhoven.nl\/stella-lux\/\">Stella Lux from the Eindhoven University of Technology <\/a>is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished following Paul MacCready\u2019s dictum of doing more with less.\u00a0\u00a0 It seats four and generates energy from 5.8 square meters on its aerodynamically-curved roof.\u00a0 That charges a battery that can hold 15 kilowatt hours of electricity.\u00a0 \u00a0Stella Lux used only 64 kWh of electricity for the 3002 kilometers.\u00a0 The Delft team claims this is an \u201cenergy positive\u201d car, using less electricity than it accumulates along the way.\u00a0 That energy could be plugged in at home at night to power off-grid homes \u2013 a boon for Outback lodgings.\u00a0 Note that this is possible by starting with a \u201cfull\u201d battery, running at moderate speeds, and having an Outback level of sunshine to draw from for a long day.\u00a0 Otherwise, the 390 kilogram (858 pound) car is a light, highly-efficient electric vehicle.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Stella Solar Powered Car\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y3FPK0KNZuc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Consider that Stella has two pods, not unlike the 2011 Green Flight Challenge winner, the Pipistrel G4, and that it carries four with great efficiency.\u00a0 We might learn a lot from solar-powered cars traversing the Mad Max-like landscape.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Ftraversing-australia-on-sunshine%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia supplies 3,000 kilometers (1,860 miles) of smooth road and abundant sunshine every year for the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge\u00a0that bisects the country north to south.\u00a0 Growing in numbers annually, this year\u2019s five-day race drew 47 teams from 25 countries, with two teams from the Netherlands,\u00a0 one from the University of Michigan in the United [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[6680,15,3,6834],"tags":[6840,4282,6839,6841,6835,6838,4281,6836,1591,6837],"class_list":["post-10513","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-electric-aircraft-components","category-electric_powerplants","category-gfc","category-solar-power","tag-adventure-class","tag-bridgestone-world-solar-challenge","tag-challenger-class","tag-cruiser-class","tag-eindhoven-university-of-technology","tag-stella-lux","tag-tokai-university","tag-university-of-delft","tag-university-of-michigan","tag-university-of-twente"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
