{"id":10591,"date":"2015-12-05T01:08:57","date_gmt":"2015-12-05T08:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=10591"},"modified":"2015-12-13T22:19:48","modified_gmt":"2015-12-14T05:19:48","slug":"flying-more-economical-less-polluting-than-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/flying-more-economical-less-polluting-than-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Flying More Economical, Less Polluting Than Driving?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ilan Kroo, <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/airliners-get-better-mileage-than-cars\/\">in a 2014 Electric Aircraft Symposium presentation,<\/a> showed that a \u201cnarrow-body\u201d airliner (for example, the Boeing 737-800) is able to fly one passenger coast-to-coast on 29 gallons of fuel, at about 81 passenger miles per gallon.\u00a0 Driving responsibly, a carpool of four or five in a Prius could show greater operational economy, but take about 40 or more hours to make the trip (and lots of breaks) compared to the five hours in one jump it takes the Boeing.\u00a0 Worse, the same Prius is often stuck in gridlock traffic for short drives with only the driver on board. \u00a0Even a hybrid&#8217;s mileage suffers under such circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Several popular publications have taken up that \u201cmeme\u201d in the last week.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/environment\/2015\/11\/wired-its-cheaper-airlines-cut-emissions-you-think\">Nick Stockton, writing in <em>Mother Jones\u2019<\/em> environment section,<\/a> informs his readers that airlines are already competitive with cars on a passenger mile basis, and that because \u201cFuel economy is hardwired into the airline industry&#8217;s DNA,\u201d there could be benefits for the airlines in promoting green operations, and, \u201cSaving fuel, by reducing carbon emissions, can help save the planet. And those cuts could come at little to no cost to the companies themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andreas Schaefer and three affiliated researchers in the United Kingdom put numbers on those premises with t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nclimate\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/full\/nclimate2865.html\">heir journal article in <em>Nature Climate Change<\/em><\/a> \u2013 documenting steps airlines could take to cut emissions in half by 2050.\u00a0 Schaefer is an energy and transportation researcher at the University College of London Energy Institute.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10596\" style=\"width: 351px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/mitsubishi-regional-jet-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10596\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10596\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/mitsubishi-regional-jet-21.jpg\" alt=\"Highlights of new Mitsubishi Regional Jet showing structural, powerplant innovations\" width=\"341\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/mitsubishi-regional-jet-21.jpg 341w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/mitsubishi-regional-jet-21-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Highlights of new Mitsubishi Regional Jet showing structural, powerplant innovations<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This 35-year paring would require new aircraft designs, something on which Boeing, Airbus and other makers are already busying themselves.\u00a0 Couple that with new fuel formulations and flight patterns, and the change becomes plausible, even profitable, coming about \u201cfor free, or pretty close to it,\u201d according to Stockton.<\/p>\n<p>Schaefer explains that commercial air travel accounts for about two-to-three percent of the worlds CO2 emissions.\u00a0 \u201c&#8221;If you compare that to the emissions of entire countries, that&#8217;s about the same as Germany,&#8221; she shares.<\/p>\n<p>The research team chose \u201cnarrow-body\u201d airliners like the Boeing 737 series and Airbus A320s as a basis for their study.\u00a0 The have the greatest number of options for emissions reduction because, as with any vehicle used for multiple short-distance trips, efficiency is already low.\u00a0 Airplanes have some potential ways to lower CO2 output by using things like <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/several-groups-now-testing-electric-taxiing\/\">electric wheels with which to taxi<\/a>, different flight patterns to increase efficiency, and (unfortunately for passengers) making sure every flight carries the maximum number of people.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10593\" style=\"width: 351px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/EGTS-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10593\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10593\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/EGTS-1.jpg\" alt=\"Electric Green Taxiing System (EGTS) on Airbus A320\" width=\"341\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/EGTS-1.jpg 341w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/EGTS-1-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Electric Green Taxiing System (EGTS) on Airbus A320<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Most important, reducing fuel use is primary.\u00a0 Richard Aboulafia, an airline industry analyst, claims the airlines to be \u201cthe best self-disciplining industry on the planet,\u201d because, \u201cemissions are closely linked to fuel, and fuel is life,\u201d and every iota of carbon emitted shows up automatically on an airline&#8217;s bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>With a single narrow body slurping down up to three million gallons of fuel each year, at about $3.00 per gallon, each aircraft costs $9 million just in fuel costs.\u00a0 Reduce that one percent to save $90,000 per year per airplane.\u00a0 Ryanair, an Irish airline, has over 300 737s in its fleet and JetBlue, an American airline, includes 231 Airbuses and Embraers.\u00a0 That one percent savings would make a huge difference in total operating costs.<\/p>\n<p>Because more people are flying every year, airline growth rates are looking like the climate change hockey stick.\u00a0 &#8220;In the developing world, the growth rates are significantly higher, up to 7 or 8 percent,&#8221; Shaefer says. This is great news for aircraft companies, since <a href=\"http:\/\/intransit.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/06\/how-old-is-your-plane\/?_r=0\">the average age of the existing fleet keeps climbing<\/a>.\u00a0 More established airlines, like American, tend to have older aircraft, while newer operations such as Spirit have newer aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Nature<\/em> journal article includes this chart, showing the 21 emissions cuts identified by the authors and ranked in terms of efficiency and cost.\u00a0 The X axis shows the volume of CO2 each mitigation strategy would remove from the commercial airline industry.\u00a0 The Y axis shows the savings or costs for that strategy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10592\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lower-Airline-CO2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10592\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10592\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lower-Airline-CO2-528x294.png\" alt=\"21 ways to cut airline emissions by half by 2050.  \" width=\"528\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lower-Airline-CO2-528x294.png 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lower-Airline-CO2-300x167.png 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Lower-Airline-CO2.png 831w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10592\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">21 ways to cut airline emissions by half by 2050.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Much of this will depend on fuel costs.\u00a0 If oil stays around $50 to $100 per barrel, \u201cThese emissions cuts pay for themselves,\u201d according to Schaefer.\u00a0 If oil prices drop, it will be economically reasonable for airlines to hang on to their old, more polluting stock \u2013 much like driving your vintage Caddy when gas falls to $1.00 a gallon.<\/p>\n<p>Some potential greenhouse gas reductions may take more time, such as the development of viable quantities of biofuels.\u00a0 As long as oil is relatively cheap, the incentives to develop these alternatives dim.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/environment\/2015\/09\/eco-friendly-air-travel\">Tim McDonnell, writing in <em>Mother Jones<\/em>,<\/a> notes that a good deal of progress has been made already, citing studies recent studies. \u201cMichael Sivak, a transportation researcher at the University of Michigan, has found that from 1970 to 2010, the amount of energy consumed per mile, per passenger, on an average domestic flight\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/deepblue.lib.umich.edu\/bitstream\/handle\/2027.42\/102516\/102986.pdf?sequence=1&amp;isAllowed=y\">dropped 74 percent<\/a>. From 1968 to 2014, the fuel efficiency of new airplanes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theicct.org\/fuel-efficiency-trends-new-commercial-jet-aircraft-1960-2014\">improved 45 percent<\/a>, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theicct.org\/\">International Council on Clean Transportation<\/a>\u00a0(ICCT).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sivak explains\u00a0 that more efficient jet engines and more refined aerodynamic designs are helping push things into the future \u201cwith design changes like drag-reducing wingtip fins and a more slippery paint inspired by sharkskin.\u201d\u00a0 Composite construction has lightened commercial aircraft, allowing them to carry more passengers and cargo.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10594\" style=\"width: 479px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/pure-power-747.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10594\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10594\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/pure-power-747-469x704.jpg\" alt=\"PW1100G-JM First Flight on Boeing 747.
