{"id":10710,"date":"2016-01-11T22:48:32","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T05:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=10710"},"modified":"2016-01-11T22:48:32","modified_gmt":"2016-01-12T05:48:32","slug":"beethovens-fifth-with-100-drones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/beethovens-fifth-with-100-drones\/","title":{"rendered":"Beethoven&#8217;s Fifth With 100 Drones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Intel recently earned a Guinness World Record for lofting 100 drones at one time. \u00a0To make it hard, they did it at night and to an orchestral accompaniment. \u00a0Musical purists (your editor) might become vexed with the liberal reinterpretation of Beethoven&#8217;s score (the original symphony didn&#8217;t have a piano or a harp), and the added &#8220;bits&#8221; to a piece that&#8217;s been considered OK as-is for over\u00a0two centuries.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Making Of Drone 100 | Intel\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eZ-js5zn-I0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The orchestra played what they were given with great style, however, and the electronics wizards who put the aerial show together pulled it off with precision,\u00a0playing well to the home crowd &#8211; apparently composed of Intel employees. \u00a0One wishes Intel would release a complete performance video without the music-video-style editing and the reluctance to share the event with the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the &#8220;Making Of&#8221; video, many points of how it was done are not readily apparent. \u00a0 It looks as though the human operators do little other than regulate the height of their individual drones, with electronics providing the cues for lighting and sequencing. \u00a0In the dark, perspective is lost, and lateral movements could become problems.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of personal quibbles, Intel and its drone operators pulled off a symbolic victory (often associated with Beethoven&#8217;s Fifth) in controlling an imposing number of vehicles in close formation. \u00a0That gives hope for future air traffic control where such drones will be intermingled with other, larger craft. \u00a0We hope Guinness supplied congratulatory libations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fbeethovens-fifth-with-100-drones%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intel recently earned a Guinness World Record for lofting 100 drones at one time. \u00a0To make it hard, they did it at night and to an orchestral accompaniment. \u00a0Musical purists (your editor) might become vexed with the liberal reinterpretation of Beethoven&#8217;s score (the original symphony didn&#8217;t have a piano or a harp), and the added [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[6680,15,14],"tags":[7014,2693,4261,3584],"class_list":["post-10710","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","category-electric-aircraft-components","category-electric_powerplants","category-sustainable_ga","tag-beethovens-fifth-symphony","tag-drones","tag-guinness-book-of-world-records","tag-intel"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
