{"id":10815,"date":"2016-04-07T22:26:31","date_gmt":"2016-04-08T05:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=10815"},"modified":"2016-04-07T22:26:31","modified_gmt":"2016-04-08T05:26:31","slug":"e-volo-ascending-technologies-intel-share-a-triumph","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/e-volo-ascending-technologies-intel-share-a-triumph\/","title":{"rendered":"e-volo, Ascending Technologies, Intel Share a Triumph"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.volocopter.com\">e-volo\u2019s Volocopter VC200<\/a> made its first \u201cmanned\u201d flight on March 30, 2016, with managing director Alexander Zosel maintaining control for a few minutes, and then letting the 18-rotor vehicle find its own way.\u00a0 He held both hands out the side door for several seconds to show the Volocopter was flying itself \u2013 and quite stably in hover at that.\u00a0 He repeated the hands-off approach later in the flight.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Volocopter: Aviation History \u2013 First Piloted Air Taxi Flight of VC200 \u2013 Future of Mobility\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OazFiIhwAEs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Zosel lightly held the single control stick in the machine, controlling vertical motion through thumb movement on the video-game-type controller, lateral motion\u00a0by twisting the control stick, and banking by tilting the control stick. \u00a0It all seems intuitive and well harmonized. \u00a0The videos show the flight and its happy aftermath.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike conventional helicopters that require both hands and both feet on the controls, usually in subtle motions that resemble Ringo Starr or Buddy Rich at their best, the single control stick in the VC200 is, according to all concerned, pretty intuitive.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6X2ejmJyVtY&#038;nohtml5=False<\/p>\n<p>How long will it be before an \u201cIntel Inside\u201d decal appears on the Volocopter\u2019s flanks?\u00a0 German drone maker Ascending Technologies developed \u201ctechnology assistance\u201d for the multicopter.\u00a0 Intel Corporation recently acquired Ascending Technologies, which makes Intel Capital a direct shareholder in e-volo through that shareholding position.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Walden, senior vice president and general manager of Intel\u2019s New Technology Group, sees a future in this arrangement. \u201cIntel congratulates e-volo on this accomplishment.\u00a0 Technology developed by Ascending Technologies assists in the flight controls, motor electronics and key elements that extend multi-rotor UAV technology to this new type of aircraft. We look forward to aiding the development of more manned and unmanned vehicles in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next two years should be exciting for e-volo, with a push to obtain type certification and produce the Volocopter in large quantities.\u00a0 The company hopes to enter \u201cthe well-established air sports market,\u201d and then establish air taxi services, initially flying predetermined routes as airport shuttles, or picking up passengers at \u201csensible traffic nodes.\u201d\u00a0 e-volo sees future public and individual transport in their little machine, perhaps an Uber of the skies.<\/p>\n<p>NASA invited Florian Reuter, the team\u2019s Managing Director of Strategy &amp; Finance to present at a recent \u201cOn-Demand Mobility\u201d workshop in Washington, D.
