{"id":10873,"date":"2016-05-28T18:32:21","date_gmt":"2016-05-29T01:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=10873"},"modified":"2016-05-28T18:32:21","modified_gmt":"2016-05-29T01:32:21","slug":"a-not-so-mild-hybrid-e-kart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/a-not-so-mild-hybrid-e-kart\/","title":{"rendered":"A Not-So-Mild Hybrid e-Kart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Robert Bosch GmbH has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bosch-presse.de\/presseforum\/details.htm?txtID=7644&amp;tk_id=108\">developed an \u201ce-kart\u201d<\/a> producing 20 kilowatts from two motor-generators, and 300 Newton-meters (221 foot-pounds) of torque, a number Bosch refers to as \u201csporting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It would be nice to know how much this cart weighs, but <a href=\"http:\/\/autoweek.com\/article\/car-life\/bosch-builds-electric-kart-221-lb-ft-torque-tap\">Autoweek relates,<\/a> \u201cThe only thing Bosch isn&#8217;t saying for now is just how long the e-kart can run on that battery, assuming 10\/10ths driving, and how much the battery and powertrain weigh.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10874\" style=\"width: 504px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10874\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10874\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Bosch-Kart-2.jpg\" alt=\"With 221 foot-pounds of torque, 0-62 in under five seconds is believable\" width=\"494\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Bosch-Kart-2.jpg 494w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Bosch-Kart-2-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10874\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With 221 foot-pounds of torque, 0-62 in under five seconds is believable<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Otherwise, we know the e-Kart goes from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph) in under five seconds and can squeal its tires \u201cwith just a tap of the pedal.\u201d\u00a0 A guesstimate of 400 pounds for the total vehicle and driver weight would probably not be too far off the mark, making the acceleration figures seem reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>A collaboration of Bosch, FIA Electric, the New Energy Commission, and the German Motorsport Association (DMSB), the e-Kart was presented as part of a Formula E display on May 21, 2016.\u00a0 Since many Formula 1 drivers come from go-cart racing as their entry point to larger cars, it seems reasonable that future Formula E competitors will come from e-Kart racing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10875\" style=\"width: 504px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10875\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10875\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/bosch-kart-1.jpg\" alt=\"Motor-generators hidden in tight chassis allow for high regenerative capability\" width=\"494\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/bosch-kart-1.jpg 494w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/bosch-kart-1-300x217.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10875\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Motor-generators hidden in tight chassis allow for high regenerative capability<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The motor-generator is similar to (although more sophisticated than) the Bosch starter-generator unit that kicked over the single-cylinder engine on your editor\u2019s 1959 BMW Isetta \u2013 his first car.\u00a0 The combined output of the two 10 kilowatt motors on the e-Kart would have benefited the anemic performance and seemingly negative torque of the 12-horsepower and 300 cubic centimeters the car hid under a starboard cover.<\/p>\n<p>Bosch\u2019s technology seems ideally suited to the needs of e-Kart racing.\u00a0<strong> \u201c<\/strong>The idea was to create a purely electric motorsport discipline that made no compromises in power or performance.
