Model demonstrates principle of starting small and working up<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She takes the long view, explaining it took 40 years to get from the Wright Brothers\u2019 first flights to 40 passenger airplanes.\u00a0 She wants to achieve the same thing with electric aircraft in only 20 more.\u00a0 That may be helped by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/atoms\/files\/aeronautics_fy2017_budgetfactsheet.pdf\">10-year aeronautics research budget <\/a>for NASA, meant to focus on, \u201cA future where we fly on aircraft that consume half as much fuel and generate only one quarter of current emissions. \u00a0The future is \u201cfueled by greener energy sources,\u201d and will have quiet airplanes that \u201care better neighbors because aircraft noise is contained well within the airport boundary.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10931\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10931\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10931\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/nasa-leaptech-620x-528x279.jpg\" alt=\"NASA X-57 LEAPTech wing on HEIST mounting\" width=\"528\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/nasa-leaptech-620x-528x279.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/nasa-leaptech-620x-300x159.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/nasa-leaptech-620x.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10931\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NASA X-57 LEAPTech wing on HEIST mounting<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Her oversight on the \u201csynergistic integration of distributed electric propulsion\u201d sees her working with all aspects of the budget, design, and testing of the X-57, a complex aircraft with (now) 14 motors, 12 driving small-diameter folding propellers and two on the extreme wing tips driving larger propulsors meant to counter wing-tip vortices and provide extremely high efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>She works with the teams that encompass a wide range of technologies, all of which much fit into \u201cconvergent aeronautic solutions,\u201d a phrase oft-repeated in these environs.\u00a0 She deals with aggressive schedules and as noted, not overly generous budgets to design, build and fly the new X-planes.\u00a0 Some of it sounds a bit like Hollywood venture capitalism, pitching a new idea and developing it quickly.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exploring Electric Propulsion\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z-Wdii8-jd8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Integrating vehicle and energy elements with power and propulsion architectures might make Maxwell work.\u00a0 Its official name, Sceptor, stands for Scalable Convergent Electric Propulsion Technology Operations Research, and it\u2019s based partly on the LEAPTech (Leading Edge Asynchronous Propeller Technology) wing tested on the HEIST (Hybrid Electric Integrated Systems Testbed), a semi-truck wind tunnel on wheels.\u00a0 If all this makes for an alphabet soup of acronyms and abbreviations not seen since FDR\u2019s administration, one can be forgiven for losing track. \u00a0Starr Ginn doesn\u2019t seem to let that dissuade her from bringing the project in on-time and on-budget.<\/p>\n<p>The project has unearthed several difficulties, including electro-magnetic interference (EMI) from the multiple motors that can even shut down all power.\u00a0 The spiral development model Ms. Ginn administers allows rapid responses to new findings, however.\u00a0 Considerations like the use of system controllers for bus architectures that serve multiple power sources become an over-riding concern with the complexity of controlling the now current 14 motors.\u00a0 Who\u2019s the last pilot you can think of who flew even a 10-engined airplane (B-36)?<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll look at individual contributors to this program in future CAFE Foundation EAS reports.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fcafe-eas-2016-star-ginn-spiral-development-of-electric-propulsion-though-flight%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
