Austrian Entrepreneurs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We keep hoping for the long-awaited 10X, or even 5X battery that would make electric aviation \u201cpop\u201d in a significant way.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kreiselelectric.com\/en\/blog\/electric-aeroplane-elektra-one-kreisel-battery-technology\/\">The Kreisel brothers in Austria<\/a> are not developing new batteries or chemistries, but through careful design and manufacturing techniques, manage to reduce weight in their battery packages \u2013 one example being the two \u201cultra-lightweight battery units\u201d they supply for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aircraft-certification.de\/index.php\/elektra-one-solar.html\">PC-Aero\u2019s Elektra One<\/a>.\u00a0 With a total weight of \u201cjust 64 kilograms,\u201d (140.8 pounds), the packs \u201cprovide [an] efficient and reliable energy supply for a range of 400 kilometers (248 miles)\u2026 a flight duration of three hours [and a] speed of 160 kilometers per hour (99.2 mph).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Clip Zuerich 1\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qboBT0m30JY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Each pack stores 5.8 kilowatt-hours of electrical energy, or 5.52 kw-hr.\/kg.\u00a0 That\u2019s roughly an eight-percent savings over the Teslas\u2019s battery, if all else is equal.\u00a0 It might be a harder number to achieve in a small package, there probably being a certain irreducible minimum of things that weigh down the small package disproportionately more than a larger battery system.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u2019s 90 kilowatt battery, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/batteryuniversity.com\/learn\/article\/electric_vehicle_ev\">Battery University<\/a>, weighs 1,200 (1,188 multiplying 540 time 2.2) pounds (540 kilograms), storing 6 kilowatt-hours per kilogram.\u00a0 Other electric vehicles fare less well.\u00a0 A Chevy Volt, for instance, has a 16 kilowatt-hour battery that weighs 181 kilograms (398.2 pounds), weighing 11.3 kilograms per kilowatt.\u00a0 Kreisel\u2019s does well with existing cells.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10993\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10993\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10993\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kreisel-Battery-Factory-1-528x247.jpg\" alt=\"Planned expansion with photovoltaic roofs to provide building's energy\" width=\"528\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kreisel-Battery-Factory-1-528x247.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kreisel-Battery-Factory-1-300x140.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kreisel-Battery-Factory-1-768x360.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Kreisel-Battery-Factory-1.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Planned expansion with photovoltaic roofs to provide building&#8217;s energy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kreisel Electric is expanding its facilities \u2013 not quite a gigafactory, but a high-level kilofactory capable of producing 800,000 kWh per year.\u00a0 According to the company, the 6,276 square meter (67,554 square feet) facility will include a fully automated production line.\u00a0 The new building, divided into three equal-sized parts, will also be used to craft prototypes and small batch production runs; and contain software, engineering development and business offices.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to Pipistrel in Slovenia, the factory roof will be covered by a photovoltaic system with a 200 kW peak output, the energy stored in 1,000 kWh Kreisel batteries for powering the building and production equipment.\u00a0 Heat recovered from production machinery helps heat the facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greater than Eight Percent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Dei Welt<\/em> reports that the three brothers, Johann Centrifugal (also translated as \u201cGyro\u201d), Jr.; Markus Kreisel, and Phillip Centrifugal, started with an early electric Renault and essentially began \u201chacking\u201d its systems to improve performance.\u00a0 In a short time, they have graduated to the point where their claims seem almost boastful, but have auto executives coming to their enterprise to check them out.<\/p>\n<p>The Brothers have electrified a Porsche 911 and Panamera, a Mercedes Sprinter van, and a Skoda SUV. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greencarcongress.com\/2016\/05\/20160509-kreisel.html\"><em>Green\u00a0Car Congress<\/em> reports <\/a>the Brothers Volkswagen Golf seems to have caught Wolfsburg\u2019s attention though.\u00a0 \u201cKreisel has also swapped out VW\u2019s 24.2 kWh battery pack in an e-Golf and replaced it with a 55.7 kWh Kreisel pack, with the weight (330 kg) remaining identical. The range improves from 190 to more than 430 km\u2014i.e., from 120 to 267 miles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These weight and range claims are obviously far removed from the production processes that allow an eight-percent advantage over Tesla\u2019s battery system.\u00a0 One questions how their modest factory will be able to further expand beyond the 8,000 vehicles they anticipate producing per year.\u00a0 Certainly, it\u2019s a story admired in America \u2013 the garage-born breakthrough that challenges the best in the industry.\u00a0 We wish the Brothers every success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One Fast Go-Cart<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At about the 5:50 mark, you can see the Kreisel&#8217;s electric go-cart and its 2014 record run from 0-100 kilometers per hour (62 mph) in 3.1 seconds.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elektro Go Kart Weltrekord Ischgl 2014\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z6FO3NgL78s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
