{"id":10998,"date":"2016-07-20T19:01:22","date_gmt":"2016-07-21T02:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=10998"},"modified":"2016-07-20T19:01:22","modified_gmt":"2016-07-21T02:01:22","slug":"honda-doesnt-like-its-motors-rare-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/honda-doesnt-like-its-motors-rare-earth\/","title":{"rendered":"Honda Doesn\u2019t Like Its Motors Rare (Earth)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cio.com\/article\/3094891\/car-tech\/hondas-new-motor-for-hybrid-cars-is-a-very-big-deal.html\">Martyn Williams, writing for <em>CIO.com<\/em><\/a>, asserted that Honda\u2019s announcement of its new electric motor, \u201c\u2026Is a big deal, not just in terms of technology but of geopolitics, too.\u201d \u00a0The motor is the world\u2019s first for hybrid cars \u201cthat doesn\u2019t use heavy rare-earth metals \u2013 a major step forward in the development of motors that are free from the political whims of the Chinese government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is a big deal in that China is the primary source for heavy rare earth metals, controlling as much as 80-percent of those materials used in electronics and motors*.\u00a0 China has blocked access to the materials in the past, stopping Japan from receiving exports for two months over a territorial dispute.\u00a0 That caused Honda and other Japanese companies to find ways to replace rare earth metals in their products.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, the\u00a0neodymium magnets used in hybrid and electric car motors included one or both of the rare earth metals\u00a0dysprosium and terbium. They were added to ensure very high heat resistance.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11001\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11001\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11001\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Honda-motor-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"Rotor for Honda\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Honda-motor-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Honda-motor-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Honda-motor.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rotor for Honda i-DCD drive motor, formed from a Daido Steel-supplied neodymium material that uses no heavy rare metals<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.daido.co.jp\/en\/\">Daido Steel,<\/a> a Japanese steel maker, came up with an alternative production method that produces a magnet with even\u00a0greater heat resistance properties without requiring the rare earth metals.<\/p>\n<p>Honda worked with Daido on perfecting the magnet and designed a new motor for use in hybrid vehicles. Daido Steel will begin mass production of the motor in August, and Honda plans to use it in the &#8220;Freed,&#8221; a new min\u00a0MVP (multi-purpose vehicle)\u00a0the company will launch in Japan later this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rare Earth Elements, Minerals and Metals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gareth Hatch, writing in the Technology Metal Research web site, explains \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.techmetalsresearch.com\/2012\/12\/rare-earth-terminology-a-quick-refresher-on-the-basics\/\">Rare-Earth Terminology &#8211; A Quick Refresher On The Basics<\/a>,\u201d which helps sort out the differences between rare earth minerals, rare earth metals and rare earth elements.<\/p>\n<p>He explains what he calls a \u201ccontentious\u201d difference of opinion used to describe the specific sub-groups of rare earth elements (REEs) known as light (LREE), medium (MREE) and heavy REEs (HREEs), illustrating the breakdown in the chart below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honda Designs the Motor, Daido Provides a Special Steel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greencarcongress.com\/2016\/07\/20160712-honda.html\">Green Car Congress<\/a>, Daido Electronics Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Daido Steel, \u201cproduces neodymium magnets using the hot deformation method, which differs from the typical sintering production method for neodymium magnets.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11002\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11002\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11002\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/rare-earth-chart-528x97.jpg\" alt=\"Rare earth elements\" width=\"528\" height=\"97\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/rare-earth-chart-528x97.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/rare-earth-chart-300x55.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/rare-earth-chart-768x141.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/rare-earth-chart.jpg 950w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rare earth elements, arrranged from light to heavy. \u00a0Nd (Neodymium), Eu (Europium), Tb (Terbium), Dy (Dysprosium), and Y (Yttrium) are particularly important to the creation of sustainable energy sources<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The technique aligns nanometer-scale crystal grains into a fine crystal grain structure approximately ten times smaller than that of a sintered magnet, producing magnets with greater heat resistance properties.<\/p>\n<p>Daido Steel and Honda have worked together to make a new drive motor using that material, the first \u201cpractical application of a neodymium magnet which contains absolutely no heavy rare earth,\u201d but with the heat resistance and high performance necessary for electric vehicle use.\u00a0 This may also open new lines of motor development in which rare earth elements do not play a part.<\/p>\n<p>The freedom from supply inconstancies is important in continuing production of motors and electronic devices that otherwise rely on materials for which supply lines could be cut on a whim.<\/p>\n<p>In a closing of a circle broken decades ago, Daido Steel now procures its powders for forming these magnets from Magnequench International Inc.
