{"id":11026,"date":"2016-07-30T20:30:10","date_gmt":"2016-07-31T03:30:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11026"},"modified":"2016-07-30T20:30:10","modified_gmt":"2016-07-31T03:30:10","slug":"dynamic-flight-testing-for-volocopter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/dynamic-flight-testing-for-volocopter\/","title":{"rendered":"Dynamic Flight Testing for Volocopter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kathrin Mohr sent this interesting update on the Volocopter VC200 demonstrating its dynamic flight properties. \u00a0Testing took place a \u201cspecial flight test area in Bavaria,\u201d with the goal being to find out how the two-seat vehicle handles at higher altitudes and speeds.<\/p>\n<p>The first manned flight took place in Bruchsal near Karlsruhe this year at the end of March, with managing director Alexander Zosel at the controls \u2013 when he wasn\u2019t showing how the machine could manage itself hands off.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VC200 Air Taxi Performance Flight Test \u2013 Volocopter Leading Urban Air Mobility Technology\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w1UXRkCsyKg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>By flying at around 330 feet, well above ground effect\u2019s added lift, the VC200 shows it can maintain stable flight with adequate power, and can maneuver at higher speeds, up to 51.1 kilometers per hour (31.7 mph) in these tests.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Volocopter\u2019s designers, engineers and programmers will use results in optimizing flight characteristics for serial production, and determining power requirements for different flight maneuvers at different speeds. \u00a0Only slightly disappointing, e-volo coyly avoids number on the noise test part of the video, although the soundtrack indicates a low noise level, even at the gross weight of 450 kilograms (990 pounds).<\/p>\n<p>Positioning and height automation were deactivated during parts of the testing, allowing evaluation of the limits of flight behavior for the helicopter.\u00a0 Since the aircraft has demonstrated that it can operate without a pilot on board, the e-volo development team was able to fly its by remote control, taking advantage of a special permit for that purpose.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11188\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11188\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11188\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/VC200-UI-07-528x249.jpg\" alt=\"As the VC200 might look when it comes into production and helps clear up freeway congestion in the bay area\" width=\"528\" height=\"249\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As the VC200 might look when it comes into production and helps clear up freeway congestion<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to e-volo, \u201cThe flight characteristics can be predetermined by altering the parameters in the control software.
