The low-nicotine varieties require little maintenance, are inexpensive to grow and thrive where other crops would fail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fuel tobacco is a higher-value crop than hay, for instance, and \u201clooser\u201d farming techniques needed to grow it could increase profits to the farmer.<\/p>\n<p>Besides Tyton, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in partnership with UC Berkeley and University of Kentucky, received a $4.8m grant from the US Department of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/energy\">Energy<\/a>\u00a0to research the potential of tobacco as a biofuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, In South Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Half a world away, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenaironline.com\/news.php?viewStory=2259\">Boeing is partnering with South African Airways on Project Solaris<\/a>, which saw its first tobacco-fueled passenger flight this year.\u00a0 The Project uses a type of tobacco that would not be desirable for smokers.\u00a0 Farmers can use \u201cthe same equipment and skills\u201d needed to grow smoking tobacco, and \u201cbecause the harvest is mechanized, it takes less labor to produce a crop.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11040\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11040\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11040\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/solaris-Value-Chain-528x356.png\" alt=\"Value chain for Solaris tobacco fuel, showing process and multiple products\" width=\"528\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/solaris-Value-Chain-528x356.png 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/solaris-Value-Chain-300x202.png 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/solaris-Value-Chain-768x518.png 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/solaris-Value-Chain.png 952w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11040\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Value chain for Solaris tobacco fuel, showing process and multiple products<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One acre of such tobacco can yield up to 80 wet tons of biomass and byproducts, which can provide not only biofuel, but animal feed and fertilizers.<\/p>\n<p>South African Airways flew its Boeing 737-800 from Johanneburg to Cape Town (1,220 kilometers \u2013 758 miles) using 6,300 liters (1,664 U.S. gallons) of a jet fuel made from nicotine-free tobacco grown in the Limpopo region for the Solaris Project.<\/p>\n<p>SAA,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boeing.com\/principles\/environment\/index.page\">Boeing<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/skynrg.com\/\">SkyNRG<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwf.org.za\/\">the World Wildlife Fund-South Africa,<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunchem.it\/testo-il-gruppo\/?lang=en\">Sunchem<\/a>, the developer of the novel energy tobacco crop, expect small landholders and commercial farmers to \u201cgrow sustainable bioenergy resources while stimulating socio-economic development in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As with oil, tobacco suffers from a global oversupply for the time being, so a new market is highly desirable for producers.\u00a0 It may be helpful to SAA, too, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-07-15\/south-african-airways-makes-first-flight-using-fuel-from-tobacco\">reported to be in financial difficulties by Bloomberg, which comments\u00a0on a hoped-for future for the airline and for tobacco fuel.<\/a>\u00a0 \u201cAirlines are examining ways to power more flights from biofuels to limit the environmental impact of aviation and ease dependency on oil. Unprofitable SAA aims to have used 20 million liters (over 5,280,000 gallons) of bio-jet fuel by the fourth quarter of 2017, Ian Cruickshank, its head of environmental affairs, told reporters in Cape Town. He said the company is seeking to use 500 million liters (over 132 million gallons) by the same time in 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Boeing and South African Airways turning Tobacco into jet fuel\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HC-GvVwGrnE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Project Solaris has created a special tobacco with smaller leaves, but largers \u201cbuds\u201d or flowers that contain a significant amount on non-nicotine oil.\u00a0 The stems and \u201cwaste\u201d parts of the plant can make press cake for animal feed.\u00a0 The plant can be used as fertilizer for other agricultural products and can provide water and crop protection, similar to other types of tobacco farming.\u00a0 A boon to struggling farmers, the plant can provide up to three crops per year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/biofuels-news.com\/display_news\/10768\/south_african_airways_operates_flight_with_nicotinefree_tobaccobased_biofuel\/\">In 2015, Project Solaris earned the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) certification<\/a>, one of the strongest sustainability standards for biomaterials in the world. The RSB certification provides a model to further expand the production of the Solaris crop in a sustainable way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not Only Tobacco, but Salt-water Plants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/desert-salt-water-jet-fuel\/\">Boeing has also partnered with a consortium including Masdar University <\/a>in the United Arab Emirates to produce biofuels from halophyte plants, which are able to thrive on saltwater.\u00a0 In turn, they can be grown in desert regions irrigated by seawater, and provide a habitat for fish (which help fertilize the crop and provide a secondary food source).\u00a0 No normally arable land is sidetracked to produce the fuel, which one expert describes as superior to the environmentally-destructive and low-grade materials coming from tar-sand production.<\/p>\n<p>These efforts, well subsidized and backed by excellent science, show great promise for cleaning our skies and maybe even our lungs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fdont-smoke-em-even-if-youve-got-em%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Biofuels would be wonderful if they didn\u2019t starve people while feeding trucks, cars and airplanes.\u00a0 Living with such a constraint, though, might prove to be productive, profitable, and environmentally sound.
