It also took third place in the Cargo Category<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cocreate.localmotors.com\/blog\/\">Local Motors, well known for its 3D-printed automobiles,<\/a> and Airbus Group, well known for its range of commercial and military aircraft, just completed a design contest that drew 425 entries.\u00a0 Rewards were significant for the top three places in the competition, with a main award First Place prize of $50,000, a trip to the Farnborough Airshow in England, and a \u201c1-of-a-kind Cargo Drone Flight Jacket with personalized patch.\u201d\u00a0 Second place earned the winner $20,000 and third place $10,000, with garnering each a trip to the Farnborough Airshow.\u00a0 Airbus executives judged the entries and decided winners.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4iznBFghD4o<\/p>\n<p>Design criteria included required capabilities and characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and efficient forward flight.<\/li>\n<li>Hybrid design between multi-rotor and fixed-wing aircraft.<\/li>\n<li>Two flight modes: hover and flight.<\/li>\n<li>Modular payload system.<\/li>\n<li>Weighs less than 25 kilograms.<\/li>\n<li>Single, fixed cargo bay suitable for payloads of three to five kilograms (6.6 \u2013 11 pounds).<\/li>\n<li>Easily accessible and interchangeable cargo bay which is impossible to jettison in flight<\/li>\n<li>Cruise speed of at least 80 kilometers per hour (49.6 mph), and a maximum speed of 194 km\/h (120.3 mph).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Secondary prizes for cargo and \u201ccommunity\u201d (as judged by the Local Motors community) had fewer prize dollars, with first, second and third prizes in each category.\u00a0 Nine prizes were available and five competitors took them all. \u00a0Harvest Zhang from Mountain Valley, California, harvest three: second place in the Main Prize, second in the Cargo Prize, and third in the Community Prize.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.3ders.org\/articles\/20160725-airbus-and-local-motors-announce-winners-of-airbus-cargo-drone-challenge.html\">Airbus and Local Motors announced winners <\/a>at the InterDrone 2016 International Drone Conference and Exhibition held in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xdocyqcWnCE<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Main Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1st: Alexey Medvedev from Omsk, Russia for ZELATOR<\/p>\n<p>2nd: Harvest Zhang from Mountain View, California (United States) for Volans<\/p>\n<p>3rd: Dominik Felix Finger from Aachen, Germany for Minerva<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cargo Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1st: Finn Yonkers from North Kingstown, Rhode Island for SkyPac<\/p>\n<p>2nd: Harvest Zhang from Mountain View, California (United States) for Volans<\/p>\n<p>3rd: Alexey Medvedev for ZELATOR<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Prize<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1st: Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Le Sciellour from Pont De L\u2019Arn, France for Thunderbird<\/p>\n<p>2nd: Finn Yonkers from North Kingstown, Rhode Island for SkyPac<\/p>\n<p>3rd: Harvest Zhang from Mountain View, California (United States) for Volans<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11098\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11098\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11098\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Volans-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"Volans\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Volans-528x297.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Volans-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Volans.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volans, which took second place in the Main Prize, second in the Cargo Prize, and third in the Community Prize categories<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Jay Rogers, Local Motors CEO and co-founder, sees the promise in the contest results. \u201cPhase I of our partnership demonstrated to Airbus the power of community-based creation and open innovation, \u00a0Phase II of our work together will now demonstrate Airbus\u2019 commitment to the community.
