{"id":11116,"date":"2016-09-17T11:54:22","date_gmt":"2016-09-17T18:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11116"},"modified":"2016-09-17T16:41:26","modified_gmt":"2016-09-17T23:41:26","slug":"gamera-the-first-solar-powered-helicopter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/gamera-the-first-solar-powered-helicopter\/","title":{"rendered":"Gamera: the First Solar-Powered Helicopter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Solar Gamera, an extension of the human-powered helicopter that achieved the longest HPH duration flight in 2013, just made the first solar-powered helicopter flight.\u00a0 In 2014, a group of undergraduate students at the <a href=\"http:\/\/umdrightnow.umd.edu\/news\/university-maryland-achieves-first-flight-solar-powered-piloted-helicopter\">University of Maryland turned Team Gamera into Solar Gamera,<\/a> \u201cto test the feasibility of applying solar power\u00a0in achieving human helicopter flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ph.D. student William Staruk, a member of the original HPH team, reflected, &#8220;Today you are seeing the first successful flights of the Gamera Solar-Powered Helicopter. You are seeing aviation history being made in the history of green aviation and rotary blade aviation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Historic Flight\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NyBDrmyRTqs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Gamera\u2019s lattice-work framework, 100-foot square with extremely large rotors at the ends of four beams, carried materials science major Michelle Mahon on two short flights.\u00a0 The best effort lasted nine seconds and gained an altitude over a foot.<\/p>\n<p>Staruk explained, &#8220;It&#8217;s just a matter of drift before [Solar Gamera] gets longer flights.\u00a0 It&#8217;s easier to trim than human-powered helicopter thanks to electronic controls.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Note the mechanical complexities in the original human-powered version, including the \u201clost-string\u201d technique pioneered by Paul MacCready.\u00a0 The electric version is less mechanically extreme, with software taking over some of the functions originally managed by a Rube Goldberg arrangement.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Project Summary: Gamera Human Powered Helicopter\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MkZ2bTWvRns?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The flight had students and advisers extolling the virtues of the project.\u00a0 Distinguished Professor and Gamera faculty advisor\u00a0Inderjit Chopra beamed. \u00a0\u201cThis is about inspiring and educating students, that\u2019s our product here. \u00a0No one thought that solar energy could lift a person [via helicopter].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gamera 2015-2016 team lead Anthony Prete (B.S. &#8217;16) said, &#8220;When I started this, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my engineering degree.\u00a0 This experience focused me into something, design.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The project has been active form more than six years and involved more than a hundred students from across the Clark School in a project most would never have envisioned in their high-school years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;\u2019This project has come a long way in the past six or seven years from human-power to solar-power,\u2019 added Staruk. \u2018So we are breaking barriers of all sorts in aviation with this one airframe and we are very proud of that work here at the University of Maryland.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Competition from Toronto<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aerovelo.com\/\">AeroVelo&#8217;s &#8220;Atlas&#8221;<\/a> won the prestigious $250,000\u00a0Igor I. Sikorsky Prize from the American Helicopter Society by reaching an altitude of 3.3 meters (10.8 feet) \u00a0under the pilot&#8217;s (Reichert&#8217;s) own power, and hovering for 64 seconds. \u00a0\u00a0Although Gamera missed the gold, it achieved several subsequent records as noted above.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Proud Cinematic Heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11117\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11117\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11117\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/gamera.jpg\" alt=\"Cinematic superstar Gamera may soon re-appear on the big screen\" width=\"320\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/gamera.jpg 320w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/gamera-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cinematic superstar Gamera may soon re-appear on the big screen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gamera is named after a movie-star turtle, a large, pugnacious, flying, fire-spouting testudine created by Daiei Studios to compete with \u00a0Toho Studio\u2019s ever-popularGodzilla.\u00a0 Gamera turned out to be less destructive than the competition and even protected children in his films.\u00a0 A note of hope for Japanese rubber monster fans: a new version of Gamera is scheduled for release soon.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fgamera-the-first-solar-powered-helicopter%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
