{"id":11122,"date":"2016-09-21T22:54:11","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T05:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11122"},"modified":"2016-09-26T14:29:07","modified_gmt":"2016-09-26T21:29:07","slug":"11122-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/11122-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar Ships Deliver the Goods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People in remote areas of Africa may find relief coming quickly to disaster zones with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarship.com\/press\/releases\/manaf-freighters-orders-four-solar-ship-aircraft-to-connect-remote-areas\/\">Manaf Freighters\u2019 purchase of four Solar Ship aircraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solar Ship\u2019s Uniquely Hybrid Form<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Solar Ship, located in Toronto, Canada, builds solar-powered triangular, blimp-like flying machines that could serve as lifelines to the world\u2019s most remote places.\u00a0 Solar Ships range from an 11-meter wide (it\u2019s hard to call it a wingspan) envelope to a projected 100-meter (328 feet) wide monster that could carry up to 30,000 kilograms (66,000 pounds) for a minimum of 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why Solar Ship?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iLBr0nIk93A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/solar-ships-a-different-kind-of-stol\/\">The blog reported on Solar Ships three years ago,<\/a> when their few flying examples were testbeds for the possible future development of practical load haulers. \u00a0Combining buoyancy with aerodynamic lift allows large payloads and great short-field performance, making their craft viable \u201cbush\u201d planes. \u00a0That the company can now build larger craft will demonstrate their concept to a wider audience.<\/p>\n<p>With operations based in Ontario, Canada; Cape Town South Africa; Lusaka, Zambia; Kampala, Uganda; and Shenzen, China, Solar Ships is located near many already isolated spots which have the potential to become even more cut off.\u00a0 The craft\u2019s \u201clifting capacity of a truck and the performance of a bush plane\u201d make it well suited to rescue and supply efforts by the humanitarian organizations that will use these unique machines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manaf: Serving up to 400 Million People<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Manaf explains its mission this way: \u201cLocated in Nairobi, Bukavu and Bujumbura, Manaf uses bush planes to service the interior of Africa, an area with a population of 400 million people and rapid growth.
