{"id":11158,"date":"2016-10-13T22:33:33","date_gmt":"2016-10-14T05:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11158"},"modified":"2016-10-16T09:28:51","modified_gmt":"2016-10-16T16:28:51","slug":"11158-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/11158-2\/","title":{"rendered":"A First Electric Helicopter with a Humanitarian Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brammo.com\/about\/\">Brammo, one of the first American electric motorcycle makers<\/a>, established itself as an early competitor in racing, and after less than a decade in the new arena, sold the motorcycle racing enterprise to Polaris Industries Inc.\u00a0 \u201cFollowing that announcement, Brammo confirms its exclusive agreement to supply its electric powertrains to Polaris for inclusion in motorcycles and other on-road and off-road vehicles.\u201drange of vehicle OEMs.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>From Motorcycles to Helicopters<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Surprisingly, that range of vehicle OEMs includes a successful electric helicopter launch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/portland\/blog\/sbo\/2016\/10\/take-a-look-at-how-brammo-helped-the-first-battery.html\">According to the <em>Portland Business Journal<\/em><\/a>, \u201cBrammo lent its expertise to a Tier 1 Engineering launch of a battery-powered manned helicopter last month. We handle all projects in a secure environment to protect client privacy and follow AS9100-compliant quality practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Teir 1\u2019s President Glen Dromgoole, reports the September 21 flight at Los Alamitos Army Airfield in California, included a vertical takeoff, cruise and landing based solely on battery power.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11160\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11160\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11160\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Brammo-helicopter-battery-pack-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"Brammo's 1,100-pound battery pack contributes to 2,500 pound gross weight\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Brammo-helicopter-battery-pack-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Brammo-helicopter-battery-pack-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Brammo-helicopter-battery-pack-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brammo&#8217;s 1,100-pound battery pack contributes to 2,500 pound gross weight<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Brammo contributed 1,100 pounds of lithium polymer batteries (approximately the weight of a Tesla S battery pack) to the effort, which included twin electric motors and a control system from Rinehart Motion Systems.<\/p>\n<p>The craft flew for five minutes on an oval course around the field, and landed with about 80-percent of the pack\u2019s energy remaining.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see future flights with greater altitudes and\/or endurance.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Historic battery-powered helicopter flight at Los Alamitos Army Airfield\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-05wY41ht1s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Tier 1 reports, \u201cLung Biotechnology PBC intends to apply the EPSAROD technology to distributing manufactured organs for transplantation to major hospitals with much less noise and carbon footprint than current technology. \u00a0Tier 1 Engineering is an aircraft design and development company with operations in Costa Mesa, California, and Victoria, Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Previous Attempt<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In 2010,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sikorsky.com\/Pages\/Innovation\/Technologies\/FireflyTechnology.aspx\">Sikorsky showed an electric Firefly\u2122<\/a>, a battery-powered S-3000 which swapped the original gasoline engine for an electric motor and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gaia-akku.com\/en\/products\/batteries.html\">two 45-kilowatt-hour Lithium Technology Corporation Gaia battery packs<\/a>.\u00a0 These were intended to power a 190-horsepower electric motor, but it\u2019s unsure whether the helicopter ever flew under battery power.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Tier1\u2019s Specifications and Potential<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The converted Robertson R44 helicopter has a gross weight of 2,500 pounds, complete with a Brammo battery pack weighing 1,100 pounds.\u00a0 Although unchanged from a standard R44, the craft has a digital cockpit display to allow pilot management of torque and power.\u00a0 It also provides data logging.<\/p>\n<p>The machine has an estimated endurance of 20 minutes, or approximately 30 nautical miles of range.\u00a0 As with all such projects, the developers hope to obtain higher energy density batteries.\u00a0 A nine-person team took six months to bring the craft to its present state, removed the original Lycoming IO-540 engine, and replaced it with two electric motors and a reduction gearbox in a custom installation, and devised a large, under-aircraft mount for the 11 battery modules.<\/p>\n<p>Although the term \u201csemi-autonomous\u201d appears in the acronym \u201cEPSAROD,\u201d there are no such features in the current version.\u00a0 \u201cThe purpose of the aircraft is to demonstrate the feasibility of battery-powered VTOL and cruise for a manned helicopter.\u00a0 Semi-autonomous avionics, navigation and controls will be implemented later in the EPSAROD development program.
