{"id":11235,"date":"2017-01-13T23:51:41","date_gmt":"2017-01-14T06:51:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11235"},"modified":"2017-01-13T23:51:41","modified_gmt":"2017-01-14T06:51:41","slug":"500-miles-on-10-percent-plastic-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/500-miles-on-10-percent-plastic-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"500 Miles on 10-Percent Plastic Waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Plastic threatens to choke the world\u2019s oceans, five gyres or \u201cgarbage patches\u201d of plastic debris twirling around in toxic profusion.\u00a0 These plastic bits and pieces, slowly photodegrading into smaller and smaller pieces, also choke the fish and birds that feed on or in the water.\u00a0 It\u2019s a huge problem that invites grand visions for solutions<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"OWOW Crowd Funding Appeal\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z1NGYQr_p18?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In what may at first glance seem a very small attempt to help,\u201dCampaigning Pilot Jeremy Rowsell has made history by flying a light aircraft more than 500 miles from Sydney to Melbourne, Australia, using conventional fuel blended with 10% fuel manufactured by the UK\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plasticenergy.net\/en\/\">Plastic Energy,<\/a> from plastic waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy flies a Vans Aircraft RV-9A, which uses a blend of \u201cend-of-life\u201d plastic waste, transformed from a pollutant into a viable jet A1 fuel by a process developed by Cynar PLC, an Irish firm.\u00a0 That process has been picked up by Plastic Energy SL, a Spanish company.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11237\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11237\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11237\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremywithplane2017-1-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"Jeremy Rowsell with RV-9A, powered by Wilksch three-cylinder diesel engine and fueled by 10-percent plastic waste\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremywithplane2017-1-528x396.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremywithplane2017-1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremywithplane2017-1-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Jeremywithplane2017-1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeremy Rowsell with RV-9A, powered by Wilksch three-cylinder diesel engine and fueled by 10-percent plastic waste<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onwingsofwaste.org\/\">\u201cOn Wings of Waste\u201d (OWOW)<\/a> uses a \u201c\u201910 per cent solution\u2019 the \u2018On Wings of Waste\u2019 team\u2019s campaign to inspire people to recycle plastic waste has taken four years to get off the ground,\u201d according to OWOW\u2019s press release. \u00a0We\u2019ve reported on the effort since 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The team promotes a four-stage proposition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recycle \u2013 Persuade the public to support recycling plastic waste.<\/li>\n<li>Re-use \u2013 Transform plastic waste to a fuel that can be blended with Jet A1.<\/li>\n<li>Re-fuel \u2013 Adopt a 10-percent blend of fuel derived from plastic waste.<\/li>\n<li>Rescue \u2013 Slow down and eventually halt pollution of the world\u2019s oceans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jeremy points up the stalwart nature of his effort. \u00a0&#8220;After years of preparation and many ups and downs we\u2019ve finally shown that the eight million tonnes of plastic dumped into the oceans each year can be put to good use.\u00a0 We blended 10 per cent of fuel manufactured by Plastic Energy with conventional fuel and the flight was a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Plastic Ocean Official Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6zrn4-FfbXw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Team mate Jo Ruxton, one of the producers of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plasticoceans.org\/film\/\">the film, \u201cA Plastic Ocean<\/a>,\u201d adds, \u201cPlastic breaks up into small particles, mixing with the plankton at the ocean surface. Plankton is at the heart of the food chain and provides us with more than half the oxygen we breathe \u2013 our oceans keep us alive\u00a0 We can\u2019t yet safely remove plastic particles from plankton that lives in the ocean, so we must stop dumping plastic waste in the ocean. A 747 aircraft on a 10,000 mile flight burns 36,000 gallons of fuel and 33% per cent of airlines\u2019 operating costs are spent on fuel. If 3,600 (UK) gallons of that fuel was sourced from plastic waste it would be the equivalent of 18 tonnes of waste plastic that might otherwise be dumped in the ocean. Factor in the 1200 flights a day that are made from Heathrow, and approximately 21,600 tons of waste plastic would be transformed from pollutant to fuel \u2013 every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Earthrise   Plastic Fuel\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/of2onmF_XaA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Plastic Energy converts end-of-life plastic to fuel, getting a 95-percent useable output, with the remaining five-percent \u201cchar\u201d used in fuel additives and pigments.\u00a0 There are no toxic emissions released into the environment, according to Plastic Energy. \u00a0Its\u00a0President and CEO, Carlos Monreal, is happy with the exposure the 500-mile flight has provided for his company\u2019s efforts. \u00a0\u201cJeremy\u2019s flight is a tremendous opportunity to showcase how plastic waste can be put to productive use instead of thrown away to pollute the oceans or despoil the land.
