{"id":11357,"date":"2017-04-03T19:12:31","date_gmt":"2017-04-04T02:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11357"},"modified":"2017-04-03T19:12:31","modified_gmt":"2017-04-04T02:12:31","slug":"airbus-e-fans-2-0-and-4-0-dropped-in-favor-of-e-fan-x","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/airbus-e-fans-2-0-and-4-0-dropped-in-favor-of-e-fan-x\/","title":{"rendered":"Airbus E-Fans 2.0 and 4.0 Dropped in Favor of E-Fan X"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Much like waiting for the single-person ram-jet helicopter to show up in your garage, you\u2019ll be left hanging for a two- or four-seat Airbus e-Fan to grace your hangar.\u00a0 Although not sharing the news\u00a0in its \u201cInnovation\u201d or press release sections on its web site, Airbus has announced that it\u2019s dropping plans to produce an E-Fan family of personal aircraft.\u00a0 It will move instead into developing a larger, more powerful aircraft, the E-Fan X, that could fly within three years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11360\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11360\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11360\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Airbus-cri-cri-in-front-of-A380-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Airbus-cri-cri-in-front-of-A380-528x352.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Airbus-cri-cri-in-front-of-A380-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Airbus-cri-cri-in-front-of-A380-768x511.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Airbus-cri-cri-in-front-of-A380.jpg 901w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11360\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Smallest Airbus (Cri-Cri) in front of largest, the A380<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Airbus started with a four-motor rendition of the Cri-Cri, four MGM Compro units twirling contra-rotating propellers and producing 60 horsepower.\u00a0 Their \u201cInnovation\u201d program followed that with the tw0-seat E-Fan, and announced plans to build these in series at their cleverly named Voltair plant in southwest France.\u00a0 Airbus further suggested series production would begin on a four-seat E-Fan 4.0 touring aircraft.\u00a0 They showed a hybrid version of the E-Fan 2.0 trainer at Oshkosh in 2016.\u00a0 But they are moving on toward bigger and ostensibly better things.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyer.co.uk\/airbus-abandons-e-fan-as-electric-tech-moves-on\/\"><em>Flyer<\/em>, a UK-based publication, explains<\/a>, \u201cAirbus has abandoned its plan to produce the electric E-Fan two-seater as a ready-for-sale training aircraft. The French company says the pace of development in the electric aircraft field has moved its ambitions onwards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019We recognize that the progression is fast in electric and hybrid electric propulsion,\u2019 said Stefan Schaffrath, media spokesman for Airbus. \u2018This plane has done its job. Today, a large part of the technologies developed for E-Fan is in new projects.\u2019\u201d \u00a0Below, we see a video of what might have been.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Kzd3PAtUHkA<\/p>\n<p>The petite Cri-Cri had four 15-hp. motors, and the E-Fan 2.0 had two 30 kilowatt (40.2 hp.) units.\u00a0 Since their initial flights, though, things have progressed quickly.\u00a0 Airbus and Siemens have flown an Extra 300 with a 260 kilowatt (348 hp) motor, a combination that recently achieved a time-to-climb record.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aviationweek.com\/commercial-aviation\/airbus-drops-electric-light-aircraft-larger-e-fan-x?NL=AW-05&amp;Issue=AW-05_20170331_AW-05_181&amp;sfvc4enews=42&amp;cl=article_2&amp;utm_rid=CPEN1000001434185&amp;utm_campaign=9348&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;elq2=877b6417b1044e1691ab2cab868c6ac0\">Aviation Week reports Schaffrath as saying,<\/a> \u201cThat is a 10-times increase in our ability to deliver power in flight. \u00a0Three years ago we kicked off the E-fan.
