Photo:<br \/> PRNewsfoto\/Aurora Flight Sciences<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Big news came from Uber\u2019s announcement that it intends to offer electric VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) air taxi service in Dallas and Dubai by 2020.\u00a0 Bigger news for SAS participants is that it is partnering with Pipistrel and Aurora Flight Sciences.\u00a0 Jeff Holden, Uber\u2019s chief product officer, said Bell Helicopters, Brazil\u2019s Embraer, and Mooney Aircraft will also provide \u201cconcepts and technologies\u201d for the near-term launch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aviationweek.com\/technology\/uber-plans-2020-vtol-air-taxi-launch-dallas-and-dubai?\">According to Aviation Daily<\/a>, \u201cAurora has already flown a quarter-scale model of its concept, using elements of the electric propulsion system flown in the subscale demonstrator for DARPA\u2019s XV-24A LightningStrike high-speed VTOL aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aurora\u2019s concept for Uber is a two-seat eight-rotor (for vertical lift) and tail propeller (for forward propulsion) aircraft weighing around 1,500 pounds.\u00a0 Derived from the company\u2019s XV-24A X-plane, Aurora\u2019s Uber vehicle will use components from existing craft \u2013 the autonomous flight guidance system from its Centaur optionally-piloted aircraft, the collision avoidance system from the AACUS program, and the battery-electric propulsion system from the XV-24A demonstrator.\u00a0 John Langford explains, \u201cThe Uber Elevate mission is all about low noise, high reliability, and low cost.\u00a0 By drawing on our nearly 30 years of successful autonomy and robotic programs, Aurora is well positioned to deliver on this urban solution. We have already built and flown the first proof-of-concept aircraft and we\u2019re excited to partner with Uber in accelerating the eVTOL initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Aurora Flight Sciences&#039; Electric VTOL Aircraft\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BSFVvhQP7ws?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Bell Helicopters left this editor wondering what will come from this experienced purveyor of vertical lift machines.\u00a0 They allude to a hybrid-electric VTOL, but only shared repeated dream-like images suggesting what may be.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bell Helicopter hints at new electric aircraft\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BjEKPMfaFsA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Embraer CEO Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva says the company is interested in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embraer.com\/en-US\/ImprensaEventos\/Press-releases\/noticias\/Pages\/Embraer-Enters-Innovation-Partnership-with-Uber-Elevate-Network.aspx\">designing, operating and maintaining e-VTOL aircraft,<\/a> and also in air traffic control. The initial project will be conducted by Embraer\u2019s new Business Innovation Center in Melbourne, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Pipistrel, already a leading manufacturer of electric fixed-wing light aircraft, will develop e-VTOL vehicles to be used in a flight demonstration in 2020, said CEO Ivo Biscarol. \u00a0His presentation to the Summit is shown in full below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Uber Elevate Summit - speech of Pipistrel General Manager Ivo Boscarol\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Glm_aIDVZI4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mooney.com\/en\/index.html\">Mooney<\/a> has experience with rapid prototyping of composite light aircraft and has teamed with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cartercopters.com\/\">CarterCopter<\/a> to develop a larger platform with four to six seats based on the hybrid aircraft\/helicopter configuration developed by Jay Carter\u2019s company.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11400\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11400\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11400\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/uber-carter-copter-528x307.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/uber-carter-copter-528x307.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/uber-carter-copter-300x175.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/uber-carter-copter-768x447.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/uber-carter-copter.jpg 1252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11400\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Carter Copter\/Mooney collaboration will have much of the Carter Copter&#8217;s configuration, hold up to six passengers<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aopa.org\/news-and-media\/all-news\/2017\/april\/27\/uber-promises-flying-cars-by-2020\">According to the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA)<\/a>, downtown Dallas will host the first four \u201cvertiports,\u201d now being designed by property developer Hillwood, led by Ross Perot, Jr.\u00a0 One vertiport will be near the Dallas Cowboys team headquarters, 21 miles from Dallas\/Fort Worth International Airport.\u00a0 A 21-mile flight between the two will take six minutes (vs. one hour, 10 minutes for a ground-bound Uber car) and cost about $1.32 a mile, according to Uber\u2019s Jeff Holden.<\/p>\n<p>Aviation Week further reports, \u201cPerot said vertiports are then planned at the\u00a0American Airlines\u00a0Center arena in Dallas, the existing heliport at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in downtown Dallas, and another in downtown Fort Worth. Hillwood also owns Fort Worth Alliance Airport, which Perot said could be a manufacturing and training center to support UberAIR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Dubai, Uber is working with Dubai\u2019s Roads and Transport Authority to jointly study pricing models, VTOL routes, network optimization and identify vertiport locations.\u00a0 They hope to launch demonstration flights in time for the World Expo there in 2020.\u00a0 Hillwood also operates in Dubai.<\/p>\n<p>Chargepoint, reputedly the largest electric-vehicle charging network in the world, will develop a special charger that will enable rapid turnaround of the e-VTOL aircraft.\u00a0 It will be interesting to see if their design will allow compatibility with other electric aircraft on the horizon.\u00a0 Plug variety continues to be an issue for electric car owners.<\/p>\n<p>UberAIR operations will begin with piloted aircraft, but move over time to optionally piloted and eventually fully autonomous flights. \u00a0Holden says Uber\u2019s initial goal is for flying in its e-VTOL aircraft to be twice as safe as driving a car. \u00a0Initally, all flights must have a pilot on board, perhaps creating a flight school bonanza. \u00a0This may be a problem for Uber, according to\u00a0Bryant Walker Smith, a &#8220;transportation tech scholar&#8221; with Stanford Law School. \u00a0He thinks regulations and added costs may leave Uber in an economic quandary. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2017\/04\/25\/ubers-flying-cars-set-to-land-in-dallas-by-2020\/\">\u201cIt\u2019s FAA\u2019s way, or no way,\u201d he&#8217;s quoted by the (San Jose)\u00a0<em>Mercury News<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0Smith accepts the technology, but wonders if Uber has taken pilot pay and maintenance costs into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of cautions and cavils, with former NASA innovation leader Mark Moore heading up Uber\u2019s efforts, it will be an exciting three years as commercial introduction of sky taxis (much better phrase than \u201cflying cars,\u201d don\u2019t you think?) nears reality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fuber-elevate-summit-announces-sky-taxis-by-2020%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A scad of news about electric aircraft hit the internet and newsstands last week.\u00a0 Even USA Today reported on the Uber Elevate Summit in Dallas, Texas.
