An Electrifying Transformation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Urs Villiger, with the assistance of, \u201cA network of aviation specialists\u2026under the leadership of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aircraft-certification.de\/index.php\/references.html\">Calin Gologan CFD Consultants<\/a>,\u201d crafted a sleek four-seater, the Traveler TR230.\u00a0 That airplane, originally flown with an internal combustion engine, has apparently been recrafted as a hybrid craft.\u00a0 Gologan, along with Dr. Volker Kassera, did the majority of the aircraft\u2019s design.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TR230 - Test Flight - 04 December 2015\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RmGN4cSgq34?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>First flown on December 4, 2015, the gas-powered Traveler was very much a fixed landing gear airplane, replete with wheel pants.\u00a0 The large canister under the cowling and forward part of the fuselage is a so-called \u201cSwiss muffler,\u201d a great deal like a \u201cglass-pack\u201d used by American hot-rodders in the 1950\u2019s.\u00a0 It was developed by experimenters in Switzerland to comply with noise regulations.\u00a0 The major background noise heard in the video is from a Diamond motorglider powered by a Rotax engine \u2013 indicating the effectiveness of the Swiss muffler.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.electric-flight.eu\/\">According to electric-flight.eu<\/a>, the \u201cformer entrepreneur and Hobbypilot is now devoting his entire leisure time to the development and construction of his future electric aircraft.\u201d\u00a0 He showed a large scale model at AERO 2017 and hopes to \u201cpresent\u201d the full-scale aircraft in 2018.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11462\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11462\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11462\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/tr230-traveler-ic-528x316.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/tr230-traveler-ic-528x316.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/tr230-traveler-ic-300x180.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/tr230-traveler-ic.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TR230 Traveler was constructed first as an IC-powered airplane<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Originating with the Traveler TR230, developed by MSW Aviation with a \u201cKolbus engine,\u201d according to electric-flight, it\u2019s unclear if the new hybrid is a rebuild of the existing airframe or a completely new machine. \u00a0Regardless, the wheels are tucked inside and the configuration has s\u00a0more streamlined nose, probably reserved for batteries to make up for the loss of the engine.<\/p>\n<p>The TR 230\u2019s lines are there, but a 220-kilowatt electric drive unit similar to the one mounted on the Votec Evolaris sets high on the vertical tail.\u00a0 The drive weighs only 45 kilograms (99 pounds), still requiring a significant structure to hold it in place.\u00a0 A speed reducer will turn a M\u00fchlbauer five-blade propeller at a reasonable rate.\u00a0 Makers say 400 kilograms (880 pounds) of batteries \u201cshould at least be sufficient for short domestic flights.\u201d \u00a0Developers plan a future hybrid version with longer range.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/software.redmill.ch\/servers\/planeservice\/msw\/aero-einladung.pdf\">A poster advertising Evolaris\u2019 display at Aero <\/a>shows both the Traveler Hybrid and the Votec Evolaris aerobatic plane, and includes a line for the EVO 230 kilowatt motor, for aircraft with takeoff weights up to two tons.\u00a0 Evolaris is a spin-off from Berne University of Applied Sciences, and the two young mechanical engineers have worked two years on the development of their own electric drive systems, featured on both the aerobatic and hybrid craft. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mswaviation.com\/traveller-tr230\/\">MSW supervised building the aircraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11463\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11463\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11463\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/traveler-tr230-electric-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/traveler-tr230-electric-528x297.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/traveler-tr230-electric-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/traveler-tr230-electric.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Electric hybrid version has retractable gear, tail-mounted motor and propeller<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Partners include Brusa Elektronik AG, a maker of high-performance electric motors; Suter Racing AG, supporting the project in gear manufacturing, mechanical engineering and cooling technology; MT Propellers, noteworthy for its 90-percent market share in Europe and 30-percent share in America;
