{"id":11486,"date":"2017-06-21T13:20:07","date_gmt":"2017-06-21T20:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11486"},"modified":"2017-06-28T18:29:25","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T01:29:25","slug":"eviation-electric-aircraft-demanding-disruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/eviation-electric-aircraft-demanding-disruption\/","title":{"rendered":"EViation Electric Aircraft: Demanding Disruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Aviation Week<\/em> reports from the Paris Air Show on a \u201cdisruptive\u201d entry in electric aviation.\u00a0 Eviation, founded by Omer Bar Yohai, is primed to deliver a change in transportation as we know it.\u00a0 Yohai says, \u201cThe dominant solutions available today are deeply flawed and demand disruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Redefine highway.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/emi_CKAlfVA?start=42&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s promotional video only hints at the company\u2019s intentions.\u00a0 Their vision statement on their web site, though, indicates a skyward aspiration: \u201cMaking electric aviation the fast, competitive and clean answer to on-demand mobility of people and goods.\u201d\u00a0 <em>Aviation Week\u2019s<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/aviationweek.com\/author\/noam-eshel\">Noam Eshel<\/a> quotes Bar Yohai as saying, \u201cWe design, test and build the tools that will enable future of regional transit by air, changing consumers\u2019 perception of both distance and time.\u00a0 Five years from now, EViation is set to enable cheap, high-speed, sustainable and convenient regional commuting using light aircraft, tightly integrated with on-demand ground transport solutions. Currently, a sub-scale prototype is undergoing testing and risk-reduction evaluations. The company expects its first firm orders from its lead customer next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EViation has three aircraft ready to provide that disruption:<\/p>\n<p>Alice, a six- to nine-seat aircraft will cruise at 10,000 feet with a range of up to 350 miles at a speed of 220 knots (253 mph).\u00a0 Optimized for air taxi operations, the aircraft will sell for about $1.4 million.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11489\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11489\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11489\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-in-hangar-528x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-in-hangar-528x351.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-in-hangar-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-in-hangar-768x511.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-in-hangar.jpg 1599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eviation&#8217;s all-electric aircraft takes the spotlight at the Paris Air Show (PRNewsfoto\/Eviation Aircraft Ltd.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Alice ER, the \u201cluxury\u201d model, will cost $1.9 million, but will carry six lucky passengers at 28,000 feet in a pressurized cabin, and travel up to 800 miles at a speed of 250 knots (287.5 mph). It will be able to \u201cfly from any airstrip capable of operating general aviation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to EViation, \u201cOperators will benefit from the lower energy and reduced maintenance costs, while low noise and zero emissions enable such electrically powered planes to operate from landing strips close to urban areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working within a general aviation framework will enable Bar Yohai\u2019s vision to serve a broad market.\u00a0 \u201cWith this aircraft, air taxi operators will be able to serve customers on-demand travel [to] the nearest landing strip for the price of a train ticket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EViation says its can incorporate autonomous flight controls that can be integrated into current regulatory frameworks.\u00a0 Bar Yohai says. \u201cWe became part of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/OrganizationProfiles.aspx?orgId=19991\">NASA<\/a>\u2019s on-demand mobility program and GAMA (General Aviation Manufacturers Association) and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/OrganizationProfiles.aspx?orgId=31159\">FAA<\/a>\u00a0electric aviation committees.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11490\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11490\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11490\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-orca-at-paris-airshow.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-orca-at-paris-airshow.jpg 460w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-orca-at-paris-airshow-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EViation Orca at Paris Air Show displays same configuration as Alice, but smaller size<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On a smaller scale, Orca is an unmanned variant, able to carry a maximum gross weight of 250 kilograms (550 pounds) for more than 497 miles at a cruising speed of 144 knots (165.6 mph). It can be remain airborne for more than eight hours, carrying a payload of 50 kilograms (110 pounds). A true VSTOL (very short takeoff and landing) craft, it can operate from a 99-foot long runway.<\/p>\n<p>All the craft rely on three fundamental technologies for their success: propulsion, airframe and energy. \u00a0Aviation Week quotes Bar Yohai explaining, \u201cOur solution is electric from conception, taking a holistic approach to aircraft design, allowing us to fully optimize the benefits of electric aviation.\u201d\u00a0 Electric propulsion gives \u201cdesign freedom\u201d with selective placement of power units, redundancy and \u201cbenefits to benefits to airflow, cooling, noise, and safety.&#8221; \u00a0Distributed propulsion enables \u201ctrimming and steering with propulsion adjustments.\u201d\u00a0 Coupled with airframes excelling in speed and efficiency, \u201cwe\u2019re literally pushing the envelope of efficient elegance.\u201d\u00a0 Modern design techniques allow \u201crapid methods of ideation and validation.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11491\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11491\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11491\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-orca-poster-528x325.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-orca-poster-528x325.png 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-orca-poster-300x185.png 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-orca-poster-768x473.png 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/eviation-orca-poster.png 928w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11491\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Advertisement showing potential landing spot for Orca, capable of touching down in 99 feet<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Most interesting for followers of electric aircraft, EViation has turned to Israel\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phinergy.com\/\">Phinergy Ltd&#8217;s<\/a> aluminum air battery, which on the company\u2019s web site claims eight kilowatt-hours per kilogram of aluminum.\u00a0 EViation says that the battery is \u201ccoupled with a high power rechargeable battery buffer,\u00a0and managed by a clever mission specific power analytic algorithm.\u00a0 \u00a0This unique technology provides high energy density \u201cat a cost that beats gas,\u00a0and\u00a0with zero emissions.\u201d\u00a0 Their web site claims 1,000 kilometer (620 mile) range for electric cars (1,600 kilometers or 992 miles in the video) \u00a0powered by Phinergy systems and three-to-five-minute recharging.\u00a0 Phinergy also claims relatively easy transition to an infrastructure that could support the batteries.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New Revolutionary Water-Metal-Air Powered Car -
