{"id":11494,"date":"2017-06-22T20:36:30","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T03:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11494"},"modified":"2017-06-22T20:36:30","modified_gmt":"2017-06-23T03:36:30","slug":"volocopter-dubai-sign-autonomous-air-taxi-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/volocopter-dubai-sign-autonomous-air-taxi-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"Volocopter, Dubai Sign Autonomous Air Taxi Agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dubai, already having penned a similar agreement with China\u2019s eHang, will start test runs of autonomous air taxis in 2017 with the Volocopter.<\/p>\n<h4>Volocopter&#8217;s Eventful Year<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.e-volo.com\/index.php\/en\/\">Volocopter has had an eventful year<\/a>, introducing its latest model, the 2X, at this year\u2019s Friedrichshafen Aero E-Flight Expo and opening its new corporate headquarters.\u00a0 Now, it looks forward to demonstrating its craft in regular service.\u00a0 e-Volo writes, \u201cOur vision becomes reality: Dubai\u2019s government &#8220;Roads and Transport Authority&#8221; (RTA) has signed an agreement with us regarding the regular test mode of Autonomous Air Taxis (AAT) in the emirate. The test will start in the fourth quarter of 2017, and the project has been scheduled to run for five years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Volocopter and RTA Dubai cooperate on eVTOL Autonomous Air Taxi (AAT)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V08IQz7Rk3o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Volocopter 2X, according to its makers, is simply foolproof, having 100 microprocessors and a large number of sensors helping maintain vehicle stability, even in turbulence.\u00a0 Volocopter has demonstrated hands-free flight on several occasions.<\/p>\n<p>Stability is part of its safety factor, and 18 rotors with compensating mechanisms ensure that the Volocopter can maintain flight even with several motors out of commission.\u00a0 Nine battery packs and controllers allow continued operation even with the loss of one. \u00a0If all else fails, a ballistic parachute (\u201cfor incorrigible pessimists\u201d) enables the occupants\u2019 descent \u201cto the ground, very gently, still securely seated in the aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11495\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11495\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11495\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Volocopter_05-768x432-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Volocopter_05-768x432-528x297.jpg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Volocopter_05-768x432-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Volocopter_05-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Operational and safety factors for Volocopter 2X<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Simplicity and safety complement the green operation its makers claim for Volocopter, looking beyond its current state of pollution-free flight to improved batteries, longer range and increased utility.\u00a0 All these factors will get a good workout in the skies between skyscrapers.\u00a0 E-Volo looks forward to the challenge.\u00a0 \u201cNow this technology will experience further testing in Dubai under extreme climatic conditions. We see Dubai as the pioneer for a huge evolving market and are convinced that many other metropolitan areas will follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/6\/19\/15830336\/volocopter-dubai-flying-taxi-multicopter-2017\"><em>The Verge<\/em> <\/a>notes that Dubai is, \u201cA testing ground for some of the transportation world\u2019s more futuristic and outlandish ideas.\u201d\u00a0 Tests start in the fourth quarter of 2017, and are scheduled to last five years.\u00a0 Alexander Zosel, co-founder of Volocopter, said, \u201cWe are very grateful and proud that the RTA has selected us as their partner after rigorous testing,\u201d adding that his company\u2019s \u201cstringent safety standards\u201d were one of the reasons for that selection.<\/p>\n<p>Volocopter\u2019s prototype VC200\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/4\/7\/11388406\/volocopter-18-rotors-manned-flight-evolo-germany\">took its first crewed flight last year<\/a>. And at Europe\u2019s largest general aviation trade fair earlier this year, the company revealed its first production model:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/4\/5\/15195786\/evolo-volocopter-2x-vtol-flying-taxi-announcement\">the 2X<\/a>. It has a maximum range of 17 miles when flying at a speed of 43 mph. Its maximum flight time is 27 minutes at an optimal cruise speed of 31 mph, but if range were no concern, the 2X can fly at a maximum speed of 62 mph.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Volocopter 2X and the eHang 184<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><em>The Verge<\/em> elaborated that, \u201cVolocopter won\u2019t be the only flying taxi service buzzing through Dubai\u2019s airspace. RTA also recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/2017\/2\/14\/14608440\/dubai-ehang-passenger-drone-tests\">struck a deal<\/a> with the Chinese drone company Ehang to test its single-person quadcopter as a transit alternative. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/4\/25\/15417506\/uber-flying-taxi-elevate-dallas-dubai-bell-helicopter\">Uber is also in talks<\/a> with the emirate city to publicly demonstrate its own flying taxi service in 2020. And if flying through the air in an autonomous drone isn\u2019t your bag, perhaps you\u2019d be more interested in tube-based travel: Dubai is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/11\/8\/13556392\/hyperloop-one-pod-dubai-design-video-passenger\">working with LA-based startup Hyperloop One<\/a>\u00a0to build the world\u2019s first passenger-ready hyperloop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The English Publication,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theengineer.co.uk\/dubai-set-to-trial-electric-volocopter-as-air-taxi\/\"> <em>The Engineer<\/em>, gives a few technical points<\/a>. \u00a0\u201cDesigned and built in Germany, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theengineer.co.uk\/issues\/women-in-engineering-2013\/all-electric-volocopter-makes-successful-maiden-flight\/\">Volocopter<\/a> can fly autonomously using 18 individual rotors powered by nine swappable batteries. The aircraft has a top speed of 100km\/h [62 mph] and maximum flight time of around 30 minutes.\u201d\u00a0 If all goes well, RTA looks forward to seeing a quarter of all trips in Dubai carried out by autonomous transport by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, explains RTA\u2019s role in the tests. \u201cThe RTA is working with the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority to develop the legislative and operational guidelines, define specifications and standards applicable to operators in the emirate such that these legislations will be ready.
