{"id":11552,"date":"2017-08-04T21:58:43","date_gmt":"2017-08-05T04:58:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11552"},"modified":"2017-08-05T14:58:17","modified_gmt":"2017-08-05T21:58:17","slug":"espirit-of-st-louis-runs-at-oshkosh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/espirit-of-st-louis-runs-at-oshkosh\/","title":{"rendered":"eSpirit of St. Louis Runs at Oshkosh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the biggest thrills this year at Oshkosh was getting to see Eagle Flight Research Center\u2019s DA-36 run\u00a0its\u00a0YASA electric motor.\u00a0 Eagle Flight, an outgrowth of Erik Lindbergh\u2019s Powering Imagination program he\u2019s been pursuing for the last several years, aims to create quiet electric aircraft that will carry sight-seers over National Parks and Monuments.\u00a0 Such flights would not disturb people or wildlife\u00a0below,\u00a0and would give\u00a0a Gabriel\u2019s\u00a0eye view of the most pristine places in our country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>International Approval<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His ideas have met with international support.\u00a0 As noted on the YouTube video of their meeting, \u201c\u2026 Flavia Schlegel (Assistant Director-General (ADG) for the Natural Sciences) at UNESCO in Paris\u2026 gave an enthusiastic endorsement of our\u00a0eSpirit\u00a0of St. Louis electric aircraft development program!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UNESCO Thrilled with e-Spirit Electric Aircraft\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EnmuuCdLV5A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Your editor became aware of the project when he spoke at the Powering Imagination Symposium at Seattle\u2019s Museum of Flight in 2015.\u00a0 Erik told of his work with students at Embry Riddle Aeronautic University (ERAU) in preparing the airplane as a demonstrator for\u00a0quiet\u00a0flight.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Electric Flight Symposium 2015: Erik Lindbergh\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dcD2usHErsM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embry Riddle University 4\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x-zuH5pVaIA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Embry Riddle\u2019s EFRC describes the plane this way: \u201cA lightweight, battery-powered aircraft called the\u00a0<em>eSpirit\u00a0of St. Louis,\u00a0<\/em>which could demonstrate the promise of clean, quiet flight over a pristine region as early as this summer. The airplane\u2019s name commemorates the 90<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of Charles Lindbergh\u2019s crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, and the beginning of the Golden Age of Aviation.\u00a0 Outfitted with a fully electric propulsion system, the\u00a0<em>eSpirit\u00a0<\/em>is a Diamond HK-36 donated by Lockheed Martin Skunkworks. A crowd-funding campaign is underway to help Embry-Riddle students, under Anderson\u2019s supervision, put the finishing touches on the\u00a0eSpirit\u00a0of St. Louis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAA Approval<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two years after Erik\u2019s presentation at the Museum of Fight, the team was able to run the motor for the crowd and have Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta sit in the cockpit while project lead Tianyuan (Tony) Zhao managed the throttle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12094\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12094\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12094\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Tony-and-FAA-in-cockpit-small-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tony Zhang runs to\u00a0eSpirit&#8217;s\u00a0motor for FAA Administrator Michael\u00a0Heurta<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The base airframe\u2019s 67-pound<a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/whither-are-we-drifting\/\">\u00a0yokeless and segmented armature motor (YASA)\u00a0<\/a>was developed by Oxford University and puts out a maximum 150 horsepower at 800 Volts. It spins an MT variable-pitch propeller for up to one-and-one-half\u00a0hours,\u00a0if the student\u2019s fund-raising effort can reach its goal.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12093\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12093\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12093\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Mary-meets-a-Lindbergh-small-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Friend of the Editor Mary Maxwell meets Erik Lindbergh<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Battery packs weigh a little over 12 pounds each, and consist of a total of 2,520 cells; 12 serial by seven parallel cells each in 30 packs.\u00a0 The total weighs 370 pounds with cooling and integration.\u00a0 Individual cells are 3,500 mAh each and can be run at 2.8 (discharge rating) for takeoffs.\u00a0 Students designed the structure and battery management systems on each pack.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12095\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12095\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12095\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/eSpirit-battery-small-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12095\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Battery\u00a0pack contains 84 cells, weighs 12.33 pounds. \u00a0The team needs 30 to be airborne for 1.5 hours<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Erik will act as Project Ambassador for the next few years, while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.erau.edu\/headlines\/imagining-the-future-of-aviation-eagle-flight-research-center-director-receives-lindbergh-electric\/\">faculty advisor Dr. Pat Anderson\u00a0<\/a>works with students on using the e-Spirit as a test bed for further development and on other projects.\u00a0 These will include a hybrid turbine-electric propulsion system that will \u201c\u2026reduce the noise, emissions and operating costs associated with commercial aviation,\u201d with goals of \u201cDeveloping a nine-passenger hybrid turboprop aircraft by 2025 and a large hybrid-electric jet by 2035.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team has other projects, including a VTOL drone that converts to flying horizontally like a conventional airplane.\u00a0 Anderson has worked with students on their 2011 entry in the Green Flight Challenge\u00a0and continues to work with graduate students on challenging projects.\u00a0 Erik Lindbergh thinks his efforts will pay off.\u00a0 \u201cDr. Anderson is developing a comprehensive pathway for clean, quiet flight that will, in the next five years, change the way we move around the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson\u2019s research team is now also focused on developing an On-Demand Mobility (ODM) personal air vehicle.
