S. Army\u2019s Research Laboratory at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, announced what they call a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/191212\/army_discovery_may_offer_new_energy_source\">groundbreaking discovery<\/a><strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>an aluminum nanomaterial they designed produces high amounts of energy when it comes in contact with water, or with any liquid containing water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reportedly \u201cduring routine materials experimentation,\u201d the team observed a bubbling reaction when they added water to a nano-galvanic aluminum-based powder.\u00a0 The rapid and spontaneous hydrolysis of water did not require a catalyst came as a surprise to the researchers.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Army discovery may offer new energy source\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oAE407SjFPM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Scott Grendahl, a materials engineer and team leader, explained, \u201cThe hydrogen that is given off can be used as a fuel in a fuel cell.\u201d\u00a0 Unlike most water splitting, this is a one-step process, adding water to the special powder.\u00a0 Dr. Anit Giri, a physicist in the Weapons and Materials Research Directorate at the lab, explains, \u201cIn our case, it does not need a catalyst.\u00a0 Also, it is very fast. For example, we have calculated that one kilogram of aluminum powder (plus an unspecified amount of water) can produce 220 kilowatts of energy in just three minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Usually, the catalyst takes\u00a0time\u00a0to produce a reaction, and often researchers have to increase the temperature of the materials, electrify things, or use additional chemicals \u2013 sometimes toxic.\u00a0 Giri adds that the 220 kilowatts per kilogram\u00a0is, \u201c\u2026a lot of power to run any electrical equipment.\u00a0 These rates are the fastest known without using catalysts such as an acid, base or elevated temperatures.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grendahl comments, &#8220;We just take our material, put it in the water and the water splits down into hydrogen and oxygen. \u00a0There are other researchers who have been searching their whole lives and their optimized product takes many hours to achieve, say 50 percent efficiency.\u00a0 Ours does it\u00a0to\u00a0nearly 100 percent efficiency in less than three minutes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12108\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12108\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12108\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/hydrogen-tank-1200x800-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In a demonstration, Army researcher Anthony J.
