{"id":11575,"date":"2017-09-03T19:20:54","date_gmt":"2017-09-04T02:20:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11575"},"modified":"2017-09-03T19:22:42","modified_gmt":"2017-09-04T02:22:42","slug":"11575-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/11575-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Elytron Changes Names, Forms, Becomes Converticopter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oliver Garrow has been pursuing the dream of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) flight for a decade, starting long before it became the currently fashionable ideal for \u201cflying car\u201d enthusiasts.\u00a0 He sold a little over 1,000 simulation packages to enthusiasts, who could \u201cfly\u201d variants of the Verticopter\u2122 ranging from three to 65 feet in span.\u00a0 At the same time in 2010, Garrow was testing large radio-controlled models of the concept at NASA Ames, Moffett Field, California.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Verticopter-2 UAV first runway trials\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iywBunykBBk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The craft\u2019s configuration changed considerably as Oliver refined his concept, with a full-scale prototype displayed at the <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/elytron-shows-poc-demonstrator-heli-expo-2015\/\">HAI (Helicopter Association International) Helicopter Expo in Orlando, Florida in 2015<\/a>.\u00a0 The company and vehicle names changed to VTOL Aerospace and Converticopter\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Garrow\u2019s team tested the static thrust of the prototype, achieving close to 1,000 pounds of thrust at about 1\/3 throttle on the 450 shaft horsepower turbocharged engine.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Proto11 (Elytron 2-Seater) static thrust\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OP2JDFz1EbM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here it\u2019s shown in hover in 96-inch span model (CVC96) form earlier this year.\u00a0 The use of electric motors may show a direction for future development of full-scale aircraft.\u00a0 Such a design would probably simplify the drive system in the tilt-wing configuration.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xzdszHwGORY<\/p>\n<p>Recent tests at Hayward, California with the CVC96 show great controllability and intriguing tuft testing.\u00a0 The black yarn attached at regular intervals to the lower wing shows persistent attachment at all angles of attack, demonstrating excellent laminar flow throughout the model\u2019s speed range.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PRoto12 maiden flight, with multiple camera angles and telemetry\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cCm-IvRo2rc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Garrow reports on these latest flights.\u00a0 \u201cIt was verified and corroborated through systematic simulations and flight tests, that the production airframe would benefit from a L\/D\u00a0(lift-to-drag) ratio above 15.0 at loitering speeds, allowing very efficient and extended flight time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company highlights the features of a compact Converticopter version (CVC96) with a wingspan of 8-ft, allowing loiter flights up to 1.5 hour, only on battery power alone, and beyond 5 hours with an electric hybrid power plant. Larger payload sizes and longer flight times may be achieved by scaling up the airframe, and its power source, up to 40 ft in wingspan.
