{"id":11582,"date":"2017-09-12T12:44:08","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T19:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11582"},"modified":"2017-09-12T12:44:08","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T19:44:08","slug":"equator-p2-makes-first-taxi-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/equator-p2-makes-first-taxi-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Equator P2 Makes First Taxi Test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Designing and building your own airplane is a chore most people will never accomplish.\u00a0 It\u2019s harder than it looks.\u00a0 All the people your editor knows who have accomplished this, even \u201cjust\u201d the building part, talk about the 90-percent rule: 90-percent done \u2013 90-percent to go.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Getting the Nose Gear to Steer<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.equatoraircraft.com\/\">Tomas Brodreskift of Equator Aircraft<\/a> is probably at the 95-percent stage of aircraft completion on his hybrid P2 amphibian, but he and his team still need to drill new holes, make new fittings, laminate some additional pieces and finally get a nose-gear steering system in place.\u00a0 Since his airplane doesn\u2019t have a set of rudder pedals, steering is controlled by pushing on switches on an orange handgrip in the cockpit.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Drive unit complete\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4EJAGkCd_Jw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Motor Run Number 2<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Since it last ran in April before being transported to the Friedrichshafen Aero Expo, the Equator P2 has waited for its nose gear and \u201csteer-by-wire\u201d controls, among other things, to enable it to make its way around the airport.\u00a0 The quietness of the overall system is noteworthy.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Motor run #2\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8k8kdaQEQMI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Taxi Testing<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Perhaps Tomas should consider putting a shroud around the propeller and using the P2 to commute on public roadways.\u00a0 The control gear, which looks like a variation on rack-and-pinion steering, seems to do its job as planned.\u00a0 Having a thoroughly different form of steering control on a retractable nose wheel is a great accomplishment in itself.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First Taxi Test\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-8EBVkAIgkc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>We can look forward to further progress in the near future, as Tomas and his team make ready for faster taxiing and that first lift-off.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fequator-p2-makes-first-taxi-test%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Designing and building your own airplane is a chore most people will never accomplish.\u00a0 It\u2019s harder than it looks.\u00a0 All the people your editor knows who have accomplished this, even \u201cjust\u201d the building part, talk about the 90-percent rule: 90-percent done \u2013 90-percent to go.
