The goal of this aircraft is to help you beat the jam of traffic and reduce pollution in major urban centers around the world. We want to change your 2 hours of traffic into a short 20 minutes of flying.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11593\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11593\" class=\"wp-image-11593 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hopflyt-front-view-1-528x260.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hopflyt-front-view-1-528x260.jpeg 528w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hopflyt-front-view-1-300x148.jpeg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hopflyt-front-view-1-768x378.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/hopflyt-front-view-1.jpeg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">HopFlyt is an electrified extension of Willard Custer&#8217;s ideas, with eight semi-circular ducts channeling airflow for enhanced performance<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Willard Custer\u2019s Frustrated Search for High Lift<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Willard Custer designed several approaches to using his unique ducts to channel air around the rotating propeller.\u00a0 These are covered in at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcgroups.com\/forums\/showthread.php?2100894-Custer-Channel-Wing-CCW-1-CCW-2-and-CCW-5\">27 patents granted to him between 1929 and 1974<\/a>.\u00a0 He built and flew three aircraft, CCW 1, CCW 2, and CCW 5 all of which were twin engine, from 1940 into the mid-1950\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Early demonstrations for the military showed his semi-circle wing surrounding a propeller could draw enough air through the \u201cchannel\u201d to pull the airplane off the ground with no forward motion of the airplane (not mentioning the wind speed during the test).\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/xplanes.free.fr\/custer\/custer-5.html\">A French <\/a>web site devoted to the channel wing describes this test.\u00a0 \u201cWillard decides one day to demonstrate the vertical flight of his device.\u00a0 Attached to a rope stretched between two masts, the machine is indeed rising &#8230; naturally, hardly the engines set in motion.\u201d\u00a0 Custer claimed flight at speeds as low as eight to 11 mph with this CCW-2.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Freak Plane Passes With Flying Colours (1949)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_EGkWyl-9u8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His later CCW-5 was a four-seater equally capable of STOL performance.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Willard Custer y su avi\u00f3n Channelwing\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GJMin9r-YoQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Its twin 225-horsepower engines certainly produce enough noise to be unwelcome guests at most airports today, and not likely to be approved for neighborhood airparks or rooftop arrivals and departures.\u00a0 Perhaps electric propulsion can help solve part of the noise issue.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SYND 23-4-70 DEMONSTRATION FLIGHT OF THE NEW CCW-5 PLANE\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rQyukaFgkgI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Custer\u2019s experiments received a great deal of public interest and comment, <a href=\"http:\/\/rexresearch.com\/custer\/custer.htm\">and even tests in the NACA Langley wind tunnel<\/a>, but no \u201ctakers\u201d for certification and production.\u00a0 High drag associated with the extreme STOL capabilities kept the airplane in lower speed ranges \u2013 but that\u2019s not a problem for HopFlyt\u2019s innovators.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>HopFlyt\u2019s Vertical Extension of Custer\u2019s Ideas<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>HopFlyt\u2019s mission limits trips to under 200 miles, so high cruising speeds will not be as important as the fact that commuters will avoid the gridlock below.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt HopFlyt, we are designing an electric Vertical Takeoff &amp; Landing (#eVTOL) aircraft that allows you to fly over the traffic, saving you precious time, so you can be more productive.
