{"id":11601,"date":"2017-09-22T14:50:06","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T21:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11601"},"modified":"2017-09-23T14:04:59","modified_gmt":"2017-09-23T21:04:59","slug":"zeppelins-blimps-and-plimps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/zeppelins-blimps-and-plimps\/","title":{"rendered":"Zeppelins, Blimps and Plimps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How about exploring a softer, gentler form of flight?\u00a0 Certainly, gas-filled envelopes provide a large way to transport goods and people, but for a variety of reasons, have fallen out of favor in recent years.\u00a0 Several entrepreneurs are trying to revive an old idea.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hanging Over Our Heads<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>One threat hanging over our heads is that of plummeting drones, either having exhausted their short-range batteries or banging up against a tall building.\u00a0 The infamous video of a drone falling onto a woman in Seattle has been removed from YouTube, probably for legal reasons, but an abundance of others are there for your viewing pleasure.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Drone Smashes Through My 5th Floor Window and Into My Head!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9t5VoP9bNQU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Maybe More Truth than Poetry<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a prescient bit of poetry in 1835, envisioning future flight into an age where Amazon might be using electric blimps to deliver necessities and frivolities worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><em>For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Saw the heaven fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Pilots of the purple twilight, dropping down with costly bales;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cProphecy\u201d from \u201cLocksley Hall\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tennyson included the elimination of armed combat and the reign of \u201cuniversal law\u201d within his prophecy, but one out of two isn\u2019t all that bad.\u00a0 Today, we see several contenders to bring blimps and even Zeppelins back.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Plimp<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Egan Airships, a Seattle-based company, has created<a href=\"http:\/\/plimp.com\/\"> the Plimp,<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 The twin brother founders have Tennyson-like aspirations for their craft.\u00a0 \u201cImagine the lift of a plane with the control of a helicopter and the buoyancy of a blimp, and you have the vision of our PLIMP Airship. A patented plane-blimp hybrid, the PLIMP Airship features dynamic wings\u2015enabling it to hover, dip, ascend, bank, or spin\u2015while effectively and uniquely supporting applications like advertising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Egan Airships presents: PLIMP\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4suWp0QoCg8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>With no fear of their hybrid plummeting from the skies, the brothers see a big role for Plimp in advertising, being able to hover over crowds with capabilities, \u201cSuperior to Plane or Blimp type engagement[s].\u201d\u00a0 They see other uses such as pipeline inspections, agriculture and wildlife monitoring, surveying and mapping and even military deployment.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-foot long, seven-foot in diameter, 55 pound maximum weight ship can stay aloft an hour on its lithium-ion batteries which power twin electric motors.\u00a0 It can carry a maximum payload of five pounds up to 20 miles at a cruising speed of 30 mph.\u00a0 Its top speed is 40 mph.\u00a0 Stopping the motors will cause it to drop its speed to nine mph and descend gently.\u00a0 Plimp can take off and land vertically, and like a helicopter, fly forward, backward, and hover.<\/p>\n<p>James and Joel see Plimp as the first significant new type of aerial vehicle since the helicopter.\u00a0 Here the lawyer\/architect team explain the pluses of the Plimp.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"InterDrone 2017 merge benefits of a helicopter, blimp, plane, vertical takeoff\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/svRyj_0_Hyg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Others are attempting to at least revive the lighter-than-air concept, with varying approaches.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Amazon and Walmart Dogfight for Aerial Supremacy<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Amazon sees a possible future in carrying its own costly bales under a giant gas bag, and Walmart, ever ready to pull off a competitive coup, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2017\/08\/21\/walmart-applies-for-blimp-drone-base-patent\/\">has filed its own patent for a large airship<\/a> to carry its goods to market.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12226\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12226\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12226\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/walmart-blimp-patent-drawing-528x296.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"296\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Walmart&#8217;s patent drawing for its flying delivery vehicle, noting details of its construction and operation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Engadget reports, \u201cThe concept isn&#8217;t completely new, of course (Amazon filed for a similar patent in 2016) but Walmart goes into exacting detail. Blimps would fly at altitudes up to 1,000 feet and talk to a remote scheduling system that indicates when drones should fetch packages from inside the blimp and head to their destinations.\u201d\u00a0 Engadget notes the firms\u2019 contentious rivalry to dominate Internet sales, further explaining that since Amazon is experimenting with drone delivery, \u201cWalmart might not have much choice <em>but<\/em> to deploy blimps if it wants to keep up. S., all supplied, apparently by an airborne flotilla of airships and drones.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Sergey Brin\u2019s Humanitarian Airship<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Sergey Brin, one of the co-founders of Google along with Larry Page, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-04-25\/with-secret-airship-sergey-brin-also-wants-to-fly\">has a project in Moffett Field\u2019s Hangar Number Two<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s big, potentially the length of two football fields, and likely to test the limits of even Brin\u2019s disposable income.\u00a0 Able to carry up to 500 tons, the Zeppelin-like airship is being kept under wraps for now.\u00a0 Apparently, it was planned to use hydrogen gas for lift, but the FAA prohibits the use of flammable gases in such vehicles \u2013 doubtless a callback to the Hindenberg\u2019s unhappy demise.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Google Co-Founder Reportedly Building Massive Airship\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6K3JOxd8ed0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Rumors float around like mini-thought-airships concerning the machine and its uses.\u00a0 The Guardian reports, \u201cBrin wants the gargantuan airship, funded personally by the billionaire, to be able to deliver supplies and food on humanitarian missions to remote locations. However, it will also serve as a luxurious intercontinental \u201cair yacht\u201d for Brin\u2019s friends and family. One source put the project\u2019s price tag at $100m to $150m.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alan Weston, former director of programs at NASA Ames, is directing this project for Brin.\u00a0 Taking a more defined view, he explained to Bloomberg News the efficiency he sees in a very large airship.\u00a0 &#8220;New airship technologies have the promise to reduce the cost of moving things per ton-mile by up to an order of magnitude.\u00a0 It depends on the size of the airship.
