{"id":11609,"date":"2017-09-28T14:09:03","date_gmt":"2017-09-28T21:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11609"},"modified":"2017-09-28T14:09:03","modified_gmt":"2017-09-28T21:09:03","slug":"a-range-extender-you-can-ride-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/a-range-extender-you-can-ride-home\/","title":{"rendered":"A Range Extender You Can Ride Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Range extenders make any airplane to which they are attached a hybrid aircraft, with an engine-driven generator charging batteries or driving one or more electric motors that provide thrust.\u00a0 Speaking today at the 7<sup>th<\/sup> EASN International Conference on Innovation in European Aeronautics Research, Richard Glassock, a Fellow at the Institute of Aerospace Technology at the University of Nottingham, gave the range extender a completely new mission.<\/p>\n<p>His innovation comes in two versions, the RExLite and RExMoto.\u00a0 RExLite is a simple generator drive that mounts under the aircraft.\u00a0 RExMoto looks similar \u2013 a streamlined pod under the aircraft \u2013 but can be converted to a motorcycle when on the ground.\u00a0 Both \u201cuse conventionally-fueled combustion-engine-driven electrical generators to provide energy at peak efficiency and minimum emissions, effectively converting the All-Electric to a Hybrid Electric aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>RExLite Range Extender<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>RExLite manages to contain a 40 kilowatt (53.6 hp.) engine-generator in the 60 kilogram (132 pound \u2013 depending on fuel load) pod.\u00a0 According to Richard\u2019s Conference paper, \u201cThis will allow the range and endurance for small 2-seat all-electric aircraft to become comparable to conventional combustion engine types in cross-country range with a single person onboard. For local area and circuit flying of 2-seat all-electric types with a passenger onboard, the extra endurance and redundancy will allow comparable flight times without anxiety about battery state of charge and recharging considerations.\u201d \u00a0For larger aircraft or even greater range, two pods could be mounted, possibly making the airplane look like a WWII fighter on a long-range escort mission.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12247\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12247\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12247\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/glassock-4-528x323.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"323\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Light Sport Aircraft with RExLite range extended attached.\u00a0 Compact size and low mass could allow mounting more than one pod<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>RExMoto \u2013 Extending Range to That Last Mile<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Richard notes that cross-country flights can often end at an inconvenient location with limited options for getting to the nearest restaurant or motel.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/13684\/think-eclipse-traffic-sucks-check-out-the-plane-lineup-at-madras-airport-in-oregon\">The recent eclipse, for instance, lured hundreds of private pilots<\/a> to the Madras, Oregon Municipal Airport, three miles northwest of the small town\u2019s center.\u00a0 With limited taxi service and no rental cars on the field, this would be a hot, dusty hike on a summer day.\u00a0 The utility of aircraft is severely compromised by such circumstances.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Madras Airport Congestion After Eclipse 2017\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/thfHfQc59Qk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(Forgive the annoying soundtrack on the video.\u00a0 It seems to be on every YouTube version of the event.)<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s innovative solution combines the range extender with a cleverly folded motorcycle.\u00a0 The 50 kW (67 hp.) engine-generator and 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of fuel are contained in a range extender pod\/motorcycle \u201cwith an all-up weight not more than approximately 125kg (275 pounds).\u00a0 The low weight shows enormous attention to detail, with a \u201cnovel in-wheel power turbine and rim-drive motor generator\u201d combining functions and reducing overall mass. \u00a0Part of this technology comes from the <a href=\"http:\/\/ingenuitygateway.com\/aerospace-giants-reveal-industry-value-of-working-with-research-students\/\">University\u2019s research on electric taxiing for jet airliners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12248\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12248\" class=\"wp-image-12248 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/glassock-1-528x323.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"323\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LSA with RExMoto extending range, allowing ground travel when aerial destination is reached<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A motorcycle, especially one that can be detached from one\u2019s electric airplane and used for practical operation, could be a great marketing tool for future flyers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12249\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12249\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12249\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/glassock-2-528x295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"295\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12249\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With 50 kW, this 275-pound motorcycle will more than keep up with traffic.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Richard\u2019s presentation includes this insight into his approach to solving some problems that still face those attempting to devise sky taxis and make \u201cdoor-to-door\u201d travel possible.\u00a0 \u201cThe packaging of the Range Extender as a fully independent and mobile transport system opens the way for electric aircraft transport utility which is currently severely restricted by short range and endurance. Ongoing impediments to utilization of traditional powered conventional light aircraft as a \u2018door to door\u2019 transport solution remains a key problem. Recent attention in the domain of \u2018aerial taxi\u2019 concepts and long standing attempts at \u2018flying car\u2019 solutions indicate that both these approaches remain attractive yet problematic from legacy regulatory and air-worthiness criterion.\u00a0 The fundamental problems of intermodal access within regulatory constraints can be solved by closely bounding each unit\u2019s function while minimizing redundant features.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12250\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12250\" class=\"wp-image-12250\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Glassock-3-528x296.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Features of Richard Glassock&#8217;s RExMoto. Your editor is not quite sure of the &#8220;Jetpipe&#8221; Fluid Transfer Unit&#8217;s (FTU) function<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He reports that, \u201cThe concept had an extremely positive reaction from the audience, including some of the most prominent people from the electric aviation industry and academic world.\u00a0 [The project is] getting some traction now, and all leading to the likelihood of getting a serious project and demonstrator made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University reports on reactions from Richard\u2019s compatriots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Herve Morvan, Director of IAT said: \u2018We are now living through exciting times in the aerospace industry, probably the most exciting times in two generations, as electrification offers a radical departure in propulsion and aircraft design, and we are delighted to contribute and demonstrate the research being done here. Richard\u2019s project on Range Extenders is one example of the preliminary work we are carrying out in this area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019This builds on the University\u2019s commitment to six Beacons of Excellence which were set out earlier this year as well as IAT\u2019s agenda on advanced propulsion. The Propulsion Futures beacon focuses on accelerating the IAT aircraft propulsion agenda and aims to develop more electric technology for medium- to long-haul flights. This is to help tackle performance, environmental and noise challenges, encapsulated in the ACARE Flightpath 2050 targets, in collaboration with leading stakeholders from government and industry.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acare4europe.org\/sria\/flightpath-2050-goals\">ACARE, the Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe<\/a>, has five targets for future aircraft.\u00a0 Most relevant to Richard\u2019s project, \u201cIn 2050 technologies and procedures available allow a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer and a 90% reduction in NOx emissions.\u00a0 The perceived noise emission of flying aircraft is reduced by 65%.\u00a0 These are relative to the capabilities of typical new aircraft in 2000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University of Nottingham\u2019s IAT is headed by Director Herve Moran and Deputy Director Michael Galea.\u00a0 Their research extends beyond range extenders into all realms of green aviation.
