{"id":11667,"date":"2017-12-09T00:29:35","date_gmt":"2017-12-09T07:29:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11667"},"modified":"2017-12-09T00:29:35","modified_gmt":"2017-12-09T07:29:35","slug":"verdego-aero-another-variant-on-vtol-travel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/verdego-aero-another-variant-on-vtol-travel\/","title":{"rendered":"Verdego Aero \u2013 Another Variant on VTOL Travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>A Controversy for Starters<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Skeptics abound concerning the current spate of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) machines.\u00a0 The latest entry in the competition comes from the trio of Erik Lindbergh, Eric Bartsch, and Pat Anderson of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.\u00a0 Their Verdego eight-rotor machine looks a bit like the <a href=\"https:\/\/vahana.aero\">Airbus A3 Vahana<\/a>, but has pusher, rather than puller, propellers on the rear wing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12438\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12438\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12438\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/verdego-hangar-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12438\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Verdego is compact, allowing a multitude in the hangar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On his Linked In page, Bartsch jumps into an ongoing fray with his article, \u201cThe Inevitability of Short-Range Urban Aviation &#8211; Why I\u2019m Betting Against the \u201cFlying Uber\u201d Skeptics.\u201d It takes aim at the opposing point of view in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planeandpilotmag.com\/going-direct-on-the-insanity-of-flying-ubers\/#.WitpBlVKtSY\">\u201cGoing Direct: On the Insanity of Flying Ubers,\u201d<\/a> by Plane &amp; Pilot writer Robert Goyer.\u00a0 To shorten the two arguments to their most primal levels, Eric Bartsch thinks sky taxis are coming and are inevitable.\u00a0 Goyer thinks the idea is insane and not supported by even basic physics or available mechanical systems.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t acknowledge an advantage to having a sky Uber drop down next to you and carrying you away.<\/p>\n<p>Bartsch is a bit more optimistic on all fronts, although he starts by acknowledging Goyer\u2019s outlook in acknowledging the decades&#8217; long string of broken promises in the \u201cflying car\u201d realm.\u00a0 But things have changed.\u00a0 Bartsch and his two partners are not novices, having fielded a hybrid airplane for Embry Riddle in the 2011 Green Flight Challenge sponsored by Google.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embry-Riddle Team Profile - Green Flight Challenge sponsored by Google\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gHHCmhvATXo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve also promoted electric aviation through their Powering Imagination symposium and the development of an electrically-powered DA-36 in the school\u2019s Eagle Flight Research Center.\u00a0 The EFRC folks, with Erik Lindbergh, ran up the eSpirit of St. Louis at AirVenture 2017 for FAA Administrator Michael Huerta and a crowd of admirers.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The Electric Game Changer<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Erik advised your editor then of something bigger and better on the horizon, and just released a more full-blown rendition of the team\u2019s ambitious next step.\u00a0 As noted above, it\u2019s similar to Vahana, but with its rear propellers (rotors) facing downward when the wing pivots to vertical mode.<\/p>\n<p>Few details are available about the engine\/generator, or the motors powering the rotors.\u00a0 The team does see a number of possibilities for Verdego\u2019s use, though: as a personal air taxi, an air ambulance, express cargo carrier, and for humanitarian relief efforts.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=2&#038;v=cm8K8WokWNw<\/p>\n<p>Eric Bartsch sees electric power as being the game changer that will make these dreams realities.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/inevitability-short-range-urban-aviation-why-im-betting-bartsch\/\">In his article,<\/a> he argues that Goyer\u2019s pessimism\u00a0 is correct in its skepticism concerning a history of broken promises for these \u201cflying cars.\u201d\u00a0 But, he explains, things are different now.\u00a0 Interestingly, he points to Sao Paula, Brazil as, \u201cAn interesting glimpse into our future,\u201d just as Airbus has for its VTOL prospects.<\/p>\n<p>He points out that the city has, \u201c500 private helicopters already in use, with a network of more than 400 helipads and around 700 daily flights. A helicopter can be thought of as version 1.0 of the \u201cflying car.\u201d It can go point-to-point without a need for airports, but its noise and cost aren\u2019t ideal for the mass market. Sao Paulo continues to be an interesting exception that shows the potential for flying above surface congestion, but this model hasn\u2019t scaled elsewhere in the world. Sao Paulo, Brazil is an interesting glimpse part way into our future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Three Ways Forward<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Beyond electric power, Eric sees Technology, Customer Habits, and Geography as making the changes possible to \u201cgreen\u201d aerial transit.<\/p>\n<p>Electric propulsion reduces noise (Eric has flown the Yuneec Greenwings aircraft he attempted to manufacture and distribute), a factor that keeps new airports and heliports from even being considered.\u00a0 Electric propulsion \u201cFundamentally changes what an aircraft can do and what it looks like.\u201d\u00a0 Designers can\u2019t just pop in an electric motor in place of the ICE unit.<\/p>\n<p>He explains that a huge amount of airspace is available and unused now.\u00a0 Compare the number of things you can run into while driving with those at 1,000 feet, for instance.\u00a0 Compare the number of cars, trucks and buses around you with the total number of aircraft you see in the sky at any time.\u00a0 (He wisely counsels not doing this while you are driving, but while as a passenger.)<\/p>\n<p>Second, Eric looks at customer habits, asking, \u201cHow many of us were using Uber.
