{"id":11670,"date":"2017-12-11T12:47:55","date_gmt":"2017-12-11T19:47:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11670"},"modified":"2017-12-11T12:47:55","modified_gmt":"2017-12-11T19:47:55","slug":"three-in-one-device-stores-energy-makes-hydrogen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/three-in-one-device-stores-energy-makes-hydrogen\/","title":{"rendered":"Three-in-One Device Stores Energy, Makes Hydrogen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UCLA researchers Richard Kaner and Maher El-Kady, \u201cHave designed a device that can use solar energy to inexpensively and efficiently create and store energy, which could be used to power electronic devices, and to create hydrogen fuel for eco-friendly cars.\u201d\u00a0 Kaner and El-Kady have devised many low-budget approaches to capturing and exploiting energy, such as their method of \u201cburning\u201d supercapacitors on a personal computer DVD.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/hydrogen-cars-for-the-masses-one-step-closer-to-reality-thanks-to-ucla-invention\">Their newest accomplishment<\/a>, according to Kaner, \u201cCould dramatically lower the cost of hydrogen cars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Super-Charged Supercapacitors Could Enable Speedy Recharging\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-NM0lWTfAv0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It would be useful in urban or rural areas, or even on remote battlefields, giving users the ability to make both electricity and fuel from the same device. In cities, it could store surplus energy from electrical grids, and in more remote locations, allow energy generation and fuel creation \u201coff the grid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pair\u2019s replica of the device looks like a designer electronic gizmo encased in a turquoise plastic case.\u00a0 It uses inexpensive, abundant elements like nickel, iron and cobalt to produce both electrical energy and make hydrogen fuel.\u00a0 This two-fold output could power things in real time and store fuel for later use.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12449\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12449\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12449\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/device-1-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12449\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kaner and El-Kady&#8217;s device in small, prototype size.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cPeople need fuel to run their vehicles and electricity to run their devices,\u201d Kaner said. \u201cNow you can make both electricity and fuel with a single device.\u201d\u00a0 Photo:\u00a0Reed Hutchinson\/UCLA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kaner and El-Kady added a third electrode to the two normally found on fuel cells and supercapacitors.\u00a0 Normal positive and negative electrodes are supplemented by a dual-acting item that acts as both a\u00a0supercapacitor (for energy storage) and as a water splitter separating hydrogen and oxygen in a process called water electrolysis.<\/p>\n<p>UCLA explains, \u201cAll three electrodes connect to a single solar cell that serves as the device\u2019s power source, and the electrical energy harvested by the solar cell can be stored in one of two ways: electrochemically in the supercapacitor or chemically as hydrogen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An added bonus, \u201cThe device\u2026 produces hydrogen fuel in an environmentally friendly way. Currently, about 95 percent of hydrogen production worldwide comes from converting fossil fuels such as natural gas into hydrogen \u2014 a process that releases large quantities of carbon dioxide into the air,\u201d according to El-Kady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019Hydrogen energy is not \u2018green\u2019 unless it is produced from renewable sources,\u2019 El-Kady said. He added that using solar cells and abundantly available elements to split water into hydrogen and oxygen has enormous potential for reducing the cost of hydrogen production and that the approach could eventually replace the current method, which relies on fossil fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12450\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12450\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12450\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/charging-and-water-splitting-528x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"262\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12450\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Device can charge internal supercapacitor while also splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen<\/p><\/div>\n<p>To increase the device\u2019s surface area exposed to water, the team designed the electrodes at the nanoscale \u2014 thousands of times thinner than the thickness of a human hair.\u00a0 This increases the amount of hydrogen the device can produce and also stores more charge in the supercapacitor.
