{"id":11696,"date":"2018-01-20T13:04:05","date_gmt":"2018-01-20T20:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11696"},"modified":"2018-01-20T13:04:05","modified_gmt":"2018-01-20T20:04:05","slug":"airspacex-is-not-an-elon-musk-company","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/airspacex-is-not-an-elon-musk-company\/","title":{"rendered":"AirSpaceX is NOT an Elon Musk Company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Airspace Experience Technologies, LLC (AirSpaceX) is a subsidiary of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detroitaircraft.com\/\">Detroit Aircraft Corporation<\/a> (DAC), and as far as this editor knows, not related to Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX.\u00a0 A little closer to earth, the planned low-altitude perambulations of its two creations reflect the growing interest in \u201csky taxis.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Holding Company Brought Down by the Great Depression<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Jon Rimanelli, founder and CEO, sees Detroit Aircraft Corporation as an attempt to return the Motor City to its <a href=\"http:\/\/detroitdriven.org\/stories\/detroit-aircraft-corp\/\">former glory days as a leader in aircraft development<\/a>.\u00a0 He notes that for a few brief years, DAC held controlling interests in the Ryan and Lockheed Aircraft companies, and created the only metal-clad airship in aeronautical history, The ZMC-2.\u00a0 He explains, \u201cBack in the \u201920s, Detroit was the center of the universe for aviation. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Detroit_Aircraft_Corporation\">Detroit Aircraft Corporation was the largest aircraft holding company in the world<\/a>. They owned the biggest brands,\u201d\u00a0 Its technology may have been underappreciated in its time, but the modern DAC is promoting a confluence of automotive technologies that could get Detroit flying again.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12525\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12525\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12525\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Zmc-2_1929-528x340.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"340\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">According to Wikipedia, \u201cIn its lifetime the ZMC-2 logged 752 flights and 2,265 hours of flight time.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rimanelli revealed a vision not unlike that of Airbus and its A3 subsidiary, or of Aurora Flight Sciences (recently acquired by Boeing), Volocopter, or eHang.\u00a0 Appropriately, he made his TedX presentation during the Detroit International Auto Show, and advocated the benefits of his sky taxis while explaining that all the science-fiction trappings could be accomplished with existing technology pulled from today\u2019s crop of automobiles.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Traffic is taking over our lives. The solution is to look up. | Jon Rimanelli | TEDxDetroit\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F0XCGbSZzC8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Today\u2019s Two Offerings<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>AirSpaceX shows two different approaches to VTOL sky taxis on its website.\u00a0 MOBi 2025, revealed last year at Uber\u2019s Elevate Summit, was originally shown as having four rotors and a four-seat passenger pod. \u00a0Displaying greater flexibility on the current website, the machine can have up to six rotors on its pivoting wing and offers a choice of pods for different missions.\u00a0 The four shown along with the passenger module include Intelligence\/Surveillance\/Reconnaissance (ISR), research, medical evacuation (Med-Evac), and cargo modules.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12530\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12530\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12530\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MOBi-ONE-Cabins-Modules-528x181.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"181\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MOBi 2025&#8217;s multiple cabin modules<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Each mission module can be carted around on the ground on a four-wheel self-propelled unit, brought to a landing zone, and attached to a flight module.\u00a0 AirSpaceX claims the ability to fly an optimum payload of four passengers and 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of cargo at a cruise speed of 150 mph for up to 62 miles.\u00a0 Control can be fully autonomous or \u201cpilot assisted.\u201d\u00a0 Is the plane assisting the pilot or the pilot assisting the plane?\u00a0 As artificial intelligence becomes a bigger factor in our futures, such distinctions may become increasingly blurred?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12527\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12527\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12527\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MOBI-One-at-Detroit-Auto-Show-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MOBi One at the Detroit International Auto Show<\/p><\/div>\n<p>MOBi One, unveiled at this year\u2019s North American International Automobile Show in (fittingly) Detroit, has eight rotors \u2013 six on the wings and two \u2013 one each above and below a slot in the long fuselage.\u00a0 The fuselage is sleeker than the pods under MOBi 2025, and the great power might account for the faster top speed of 250 mph.\u00a0\u00a0 It can handle two-to-four passengers and up to 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of cargo.\u00a0 Operation can be either electrical VTOL, or conventional short takeoff and landing (e-STOL).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12528\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12528\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12528\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mobi-One-F34-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"528\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MOBi One can fly in either e-VTOL or e-STOL fashion<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Detroit Aircraft Corp. has grand ambitions and a talented group backing Rimanelli.\u00a0 Their craft are similar to others charged with the same mission, and that is to be expected.\u00a0 The high-winged configuration would certainly allow great flexibility in handling a number of different payload modules and that utility may lead to its widespread use.\u00a0 The company has expansive ideas about that.\u00a0 <em>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uavexpertnews.com\/2018\/01\/airspacex-reveals-electric-vtol-aircraft\/\">Our goal is to deploy 2,500 aircraft<\/a> at the nation\u2019s 50 largest cities by 2026, targeting existing infrastructure at first,\u201d says JP Yorro, Chief Commercial Officer at AirSpaceX.\u00a0 \u201cThe MOBi development program will be capital intensive, but air Mobility as a Service could generate billions for the economy.
