{"id":11716,"date":"2018-02-10T15:51:13","date_gmt":"2018-02-10T22:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11716"},"modified":"2018-02-10T15:51:13","modified_gmt":"2018-02-10T22:51:13","slug":"magicall-motor-controller-vies-for-simplicity-lightness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/magicall-motor-controller-vies-for-simplicity-lightness\/","title":{"rendered":"MAGiCALL Motor\/Controller Vies for Simplicity, Lightness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.magicall.biz\/products\/integrated-motor-controller-magidrive\/\">MAGiCALL<\/a>, a California-based firm whose slogan, \u201cInnovative Magnetics to Power Your Products,\u201d covers everything from aircraft to medical applications, has introduced a combined MAGiDRIVE\u2122 integrated motor and controller line of products.\u00a0 These are of particular interest for electric aircraft designers, since the company has been picked to supply motors to the Airbus A3 Vahana project.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12586\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12586\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12586\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/magidrive-528x623.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"623\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MAGiDRIVE motors combine motor and controller in one compact, light unit<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Whatever else they may accomplish, the many multi-rotor sky taxis will create a demand for a great number of motors, controllers, and battery packs.\u00a0 16 on every Volocopter, eight to 16 on every Ehang, and eight on every Vahana will promote mass production, perhaps leading to a Model T moment where such technology becomes universally affordable.<\/p>\n<p>What Ford did for automobiles, most of the current crop of sky taxi designers are attempting for the democratization of flight.\u00a0 They could start with Ford employee Bill Stout\u2019s motto, <em>Simplicate and add more lightness<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 He, by the way, designed the Ford TriMotor, the first certified airliner in America, and later had dreams of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.modernmechanix.com\/william-b-stout-and-his-wonderful-skycar\/#mmGal\">an early sky taxi &#8211; the Aerocar<\/a>.\u00a0 Although Stout&#8217;s vision never came to fruition, Molt Taylor adopted the name for his own successful machine.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12587\" style=\"width: 470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12587\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12587\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/bill-stout_sky_car_0-460x704.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"704\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12587\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The idea and the ideals are not new, as shown in this <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.modernmechanix.com\/william-b-stout-and-his-wonderful-skycar\/\">Modern Mechanix article from 1943<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>MAGiCALL has one approach to making Stout\u2019s idea happen, combining motor and controller in one compact unit.\u00a0 Melding the two air-cooled units eliminates the weight of connecting cables and the possibility of issues resulting from long cable lengths.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/flowtechonline.com\/images\/flowtech\/presentations\/Cable-Lead-Lengths.pdf\"> ABB\u2019s PowerPoint presentation details the challenges involved<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, the only thing left for the designer to do is figure out how to route battery cables to the combined unit and sort out how to control their speed.\u00a0 This can be done by a variety of means, including \u201cCAN, RS485, PWM, Ethernet, and more.\u201d\u00a0 The motor can be controlled for \u201ctorque, speed, power, and more, \u201d and run as a motor or generator in both directions.\u00a0 (MAGiCALL advertises their use as generators on wind turbines.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11717\" style=\"width: 472px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11717\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11717\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sky_car_2-462x704.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"704\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sky_car_2-462x704.jpg 462w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sky_car_2-197x300.jpg 197w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sky_car_2-768x1169.jpg 768w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sky_car_2.jpg 1838w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mechanix Illustrated showed sky taxis as they might have been in 1943. Modern improvements make for smaller garages<\/p><\/div>\n<p>MAGiDRIVE claims to be light and powerful, their 75M example motor with an outside diameter of 11 inches and length of five inches weighing 11 kilograms (24.2 pounds) and exerting up to 130 Newton-meters (95 pound-feet) of torque and putting out up to 60 kilowatts (80.4 horsepower).<\/p>\n<p>The motors have hollow shafts to allow variable pitch propellers and pitot tubes, and provide integrated temperature, vibration and health monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>Units range from 4.1 inches in diameter to 18.4 inches, with nothing over 7.6 inches long (thick?).\u00a0 They can produce from six up to 300 maximum kW (eight to 402 hp.), with up to 1,000 Nm (738 pound-feet) of torque.\u00a0 Weights range from 0.7 to 49.5 kg.
