{"id":11742,"date":"2018-03-28T23:25:08","date_gmt":"2018-03-29T06:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11742"},"modified":"2018-03-30T21:50:28","modified_gmt":"2018-03-31T04:50:28","slug":"from-anime-to-low-powered-electric-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/from-anime-to-low-powered-electric-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"From Anime to Low-Powered Electric Flight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team in Japan has flown a low-power electric canard motorglider, and is now building a more conventional, lightweight electric aircraft.\u00a0 Members of Aircraft Olympos Ltd. on the large island of Hokaido have been instrumental in building and flying everything from a jet inspired by one of Hayoa Miyazaki\u2019s anime productions (Nausicaa (Dove) Of The Valley Of The Wind \u2013 1984) to some fascinating electric aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nausica\u00e4 of the Valley of the Wind - Official Trailer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6zhLBe319KE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Brian Carpenter met Tota Ueno, a worker on the project, and visitor at one of Brian\u2019s maintenance classes in Corning, California.\u00a0 Brian was selected by the National General Aviation Awards Committee as the recipient of the 2017 National Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) of the Year Award.\u00a0 His classes in ultralight aircraft maintenance and two-stroke engine repair and maintenance obviously draw a worldwide audience.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, he has been developing the <a href=\"https:\/\/electricmotorglider.com\/\">EMG-6 ultralight,<\/a> which can be powered by traditional two-stroke engines or one or more electric motors.\u00a0 He\u2019s been testing a series of motors and recently selected a Rotex package from the Czech Republic as a viable power system.\u00a0 (More on that in an upcoming blog entry.)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"M-02J:OpenSky TestFlight Sep.2016\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gSwSCRQiwTM?start=113&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Of course, he\u2019d be interested in Ueno\u2019s work with a highly creative group in Japan.\u00a0 Beyond the anime-inspired machine, they have built very light, electrically-powered machines that manifest a different kind of flight \u2013 slow and elegant.<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s SP-1 solar-powered craft is a derivative of their canard glider, or SC-1.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ac-olympos.com\/product\/gc02\/gc02_top.html\">Plans are available from the group<\/a>, with the .pdf version available for 3,000 Yen (a little over $28 USD).\u00a0 A1-size drawings are 2,800 Yen each ($26.31), or 69,800 Yen ($656) for the full 36-drawing set.<\/p>\n<p>Note the controllable-pitch propeller and interesting solar fabric on the wings.\u00a0 Most solar-powered craft such as the Solar Impulse or Eric Raymond\u2019s Sunseekers have rigid panels encapsulated into the structure.\u00a0 This fabric, as can be seen in the in-flight views, ripples in the airstream.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u30bd\u30fc\u30e9\u30fc\u30d7\u30ec\u30fc\u30f3 \u300cSP-1\u300d\u65cb\u56de\u8a66\u9a13 @\u305f\u304d\u304b\u308f\u30b9\u30ab\u30a4\u30d1\u30fc\u30af\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fO07IaBCvq4?start=8&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>One wonders if the group, which has been in operation for over 32 years, designed and built their own 2.2 kilowatt motor, or if they chose some industrial design.\u00a0 The chain drive allows a large propeller to turn slowly, essential to high efficiency.\u00a0 For the 86-kilogram (189 pound) machine, this combination obviously allows flight in ground effect, with a mere 700 Watts necessary to maintain level flight.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solair.de\/\">Gunther Rochelt\u2019s earlier solar-powered airplane, <\/a>Solair 2, was able to maintain level flight on 755 Watts out of ground effect, so this is still impressive performance on what is essentially model-airplane power.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u30bd\u30fc\u30e9\u30fc\u30d7\u30ec\u30fc\u30f3 \u300cSP-1\u300d\u4e88\u544a\u7de8\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dpjQrQv4cJk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12645\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Olympos-FOP1-two-view-528x373.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Olympos is working on a more conventional design.
