{"id":11764,"date":"2018-04-29T21:50:36","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T04:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11764"},"modified":"2018-04-29T21:50:36","modified_gmt":"2018-04-30T04:50:36","slug":"project-atos-wing-explores-ultralight-electric-soaring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/project-atos-wing-explores-ultralight-electric-soaring\/","title":{"rendered":"Project ATOS Wing Explores Ultralight Electric Soaring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Its translucent wing shimmering on the wall above Hall A7 at Friedrichshafen\u2019s 2018 Aero Expo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.a-i-r.de\/\">A-I-R\u2019s ATOS Wing<\/a> commanded the attention of show goers.\u00a0 A-I-R (Aeronautic Innovation R\u00fchle &amp; Co GmbH) produces a line of ultralight hang gliders and electrically-powered craft based on a common wing design modified for different weight and performance requirements.\u00a0 Note the large wing at about 35 seconds into this perambulation around Hall A7, along with tantalizing glimpses of the other displays that we will cover in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AERO 2018 - Part 7 of 13\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hrC43Gq5iTw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although ethereal in appearance, ATOS wings can carry significant loads compared to their minimal weight.\u00a0 The 50 kilogram (110 pound) VRS 280, for instance, can carry an all-up weight of 330 kilograms (726 pounds), an impressive structural weight to gross weight ratio. \u00a0Coupled with the Wing\u2019s 28:1 claimed glide ratio and 0.55 meters per second (108.3 feet per minute) rate of sink, the Wing will allow long, lazy glides from altitude and even permit modest cross-country flights.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12714\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12714\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12714\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/AIR-electric-2-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12714\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A-I-R ATOS Wing coupled with somewhat conventional fuselage and FES-like folding propeller ostensibly allows 28:1 glide ratio<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The electrified Wing fits in the 120 kilogram (264 pounds) empty weight category and can carry up to a 110-kilogram (242 pound) pilot.\u00a0 The 506 pound total carried on a 14.5 meter (47.6 feet) span equals a very light span loading of 10.6 pounds per foot.\u00a0 A high-performance 15-meter class sailplane such as a Windward Performance Duckhawk carries 19.5 pounds per foot of span.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2. September 2017\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-30o0UaDNeI?start=246&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Variations using different forms of the basic wing and the ubiquitous Eck\/Geiger electric motors showed up at last year\u2019s Greilinger Elektroflugtage (Greilinger Electric Flying Days).
