{"id":11783,"date":"2018-05-18T14:30:29","date_gmt":"2018-05-18T21:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11783"},"modified":"2018-05-18T14:30:29","modified_gmt":"2018-05-18T21:30:29","slug":"magnix-an-australian-high-power-and-torque-dense-motor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/magnix-an-australian-high-power-and-torque-dense-motor\/","title":{"rendered":"MagniX, an Australian High-Power and Torque-Dense Motor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new motor from Australia, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magnix.aero\/\">MagniX Magni5<\/a>, promises 300 kilowatts (402 horsepower) from a 53-kilogram (116.6-pound) package, or about five kW per kilogram.\u00a0 This is competitive with other power-dense permanent magnet motors.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12786\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12786\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12786\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/MagniX-magni5-DataSheet.pdf-page-2-of-2-2018-01-10-01-37-361-528x395.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"395\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torque Line is flat from zero to 2,500 rpm top speed of Magni5 motor, with impressive 1,000 Nm output<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Magni5 claims an absolutely flat torque curve (more a line, really) from zero to 2,500 rpm, producing 1,000 Newton-meters (737.5 foot-pounds) throughout its revolution range.\u00a0 This is a great deal like steam locomotive performance.\u00a0 Its 444 millimeter (17.5 inches) diameter and 275 mm (10.8 inches) size is perfect to hide behind a propeller spinner.\u00a0 The torque should guarantee a good rate of climb, and might be a worthy candidate for powering a Pikes Peak International Hill Climb contender.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"magniX - Brand Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-HCt_MtffM8?start=4&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The company certainly seems to be on track for designing around aircraft use, promoting their expertise and that of partners with a \u201cStrong background in [the] FAA certification process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MagniX claims, \u201cThe magni5 uses a combination of advanced electromagnetic designs and materials, optimized motor topology, and a proprietary cooling system to deliver exceptional power and torque density with great efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12788\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12788\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12788\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/magniAlpha-motor-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MagniAlpha superconducting stator promises extraordinary performance<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even more promising, MagniX\u2019s technology is apparently on the verge of creating a superconducting MagniAlpha motor that could product 25kW per kilogram.\u00a0 That would power an ultralight with a 2.2-pound motor, or a Light Sport Aircraft from a mere eight or nine pound powerplant, leaving extra poundage for batteries.\u00a0 MagniX is not without experience in superconductivity, explaining, \u201cWe build superconducting generators for energy-intensive industries such as smelting and hydrogen fuel production.
