One can learn to fly it in about an hour, but it will remain low and slow enough to give the thrill of flight without inordinate dangers.\u00a0 That\u2019s the marketing pitch from Kitty Hawk, and it\u2019s not a bad one.\u00a0 Imagine going to a beach or lake with dozens of these fluttering about over the water\u2019s surface.\u00a0 It\u2019s the same kind of lure driving go-karts on a miniature race course has for vacationers.<\/p>\n<p>Safety is obviously a factor for a machine meant for amateur use.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/robbreport.com\/motors\/aviation\/kitty-hawk-flyer-back-looks-better-than-ever-2799291\/\">John Lyon explains this in the <em>Robb Report<\/em><\/a>: \u201cThe zero-emissions Flyer is completely powered by electricity, and its propellers all operate independently, meaning that if there is a problem with one or more propellers, the entire vehicle won\u2019t come crashing down. That said, even if it did, the aircraft is only meant for flying over water and only flies between three and ten feet off of the surface, so even a worst-case scenario would only involve a short plop into the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"We took to the sky in Kitty Hawk&#039;s flying car\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uz0wLD_02nQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>CNN\u2019s Rachel Crane traveled to a secret lake-side enclave in the desert near Las Vegas to train in and float in the Flyer.\u00a0 Colleague Matt McFarland watched, interviewed Kitty Hawk CEO Sebastian Thrun, and made the seemingly inescapable link to the Jetsons.<\/p>\n<p>One troubling aspect was the dunking practice.\u00a0 \u201cThe hardest part of the day was definitely the ball pit,\u2019 recalled Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring her training session, she was strapped into Flyer and turned upside down in a ball pit. The drill is a way to practice unbuckling one&#8217;s seat belt and escaping Flyer if it were to crash upside down on water.\u201d\u00a0 That possibility might give potential flyers pause.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12840\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12840\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12840\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/kittyhawk-Flyer-Bright-Hangar-1-528x365.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"365\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Covey of Kitty Hawk Flyers indicates production goals for future<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kitty Hawk\u2019s website offers a light once-over on technical aspects of the design, letting us know the craft\u2019s \u201cAll-electric motors [are] powered by lithium polymer batteries,\u201d and \u201cInnovative software\u2026 utilizes data from multiple sensors to make flying intuitive and easy.\u201d\u00a0 The \u201cRevolutionary Design [is] expertly crafted using highly durable composite material that is lightweight, aerodynamic and waterproof.\u201d\u00a0 The last point is necessary because the Flyer will only be authorized, like its first iteration, for operation over water.\u00a0 This version, looking like an open kayak with outriggers, will do well on water, large open bodies of which provide safe places to practice one\u2019s skills.<\/p>\n<p>Kitty Hawk will be \u201cSignificantly quieter than any fossil fuel based equivalent\u201d \u2013 whatever that might be.\u00a0 Rachel Crane\u2019s flight was software-limited to six mph and a lake-skimming altitude.\u00a0 As Flyers achieve more hours in the air, these limits will expand to enable commuter-like flights at altitudes where they might interfere with Amazon and Dominos\u2019 deliveries.\u00a0 Everything is FAR Part 103, avoiding licenses, medicals and other impediments to personal flight.<\/p>\n<p>Todd Reichert leads the engineering effort.\u00a0 He and his team from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aerovelo.com\/our-projects\/\">Aerovelo<\/a> built and flew the first human-powered ornithopter, won the Sikorsky Prize for human-powered helicopters, designed, built and ran Eta, the fastest human-powered vehicle on earth (89.59 mph).\u00a0 This is an aerodynamic achievement as well as an athletic one, and is a huge contrast to the Flyer.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Under the Hood of the Fastest Bike in the World\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BC5KIFHd5Ao?start=239&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Kitty Hawk offers several opportunities to partner with the firm.\u00a0 One might want to operate a fleet of flyers, or stage an event involving several craft.\u00a0 One might decide to purchase a Flyer (price unknown yet) for personal use.\u00a0 These options require you to fill out an application and await an invitation from the firm.\u00a0 One can connect with the company and receive current news updates, and for those with the necessary skills, join the Kitty Hawk team.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fkitty-hawk-flyer-shows-improvements-limits-continue%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kitty Hawk Flyer, the Larry Page-backed \u201csky taxi,\u201d seems like a great summer escape machine.
