{"id":11801,"date":"2018-06-19T21:03:52","date_gmt":"2018-06-20T04:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11801"},"modified":"2018-06-19T21:03:52","modified_gmt":"2018-06-20T04:03:52","slug":"gofly-announces-first-round-prize-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/gofly-announces-first-round-prize-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"GoFly Announces First Round Prize Winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boeing just announced <a href=\"http:\/\/goflyprize.com\/news\/meet-the-10-winners-of-gofly-phase-i\/\">the ten winners of Phase I in its GoFly competition<\/a>, in which entrants design, build and fly a \u201cpersonal flying device.\u201d\u00a0 As Boeing explains, contest rules are designed to enable entrants \u201cTo foster the development of safe, quiet, ultra-compact, near-VTOL personal flying devices capable of flying twenty miles while carrying a single person.\u201d\u00a0 The list of partners and co-sponsors is impressive and includes virtually all major American aviation advocacy groups.<\/p>\n<p>As the Green Flight Challenge demonstrated seven years ago, prize money encourages a grand series of investments by individuals in hopes of winning a prize.\u00a0 In this case, 3,000 entries by 725 teams from 95 countries presented drawings and documents describing their proposed PFD, with a select 10 advancing to Phase II, which will require a demonstration of the proposed machine\u2019s ability to perform as promised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be able to engage so many individuals from leading universities, major corporations and startups, and connect them through our community of innovators enables us to impact the industry in an unprecedented way,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-flying-car-jetpacks-20180614-story.html\">said GoFly CEO Gwen Lighter<\/a>. \u201cWe know that the road to personal flight is long and difficult, but we are incredibly encouraged and inspired by the volume of strong submissions that we have received in Phase I. This is only the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More pessimistically, \u201c\u2019The GoFly prize is impossible,\u2019 said Michael Hirschberg, executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/\">Vertical Flight Society<\/a>, a technical society for people working on vertical takeoff and landing flight. \u2018There is no way \u2014 based on conventional thinking \u2014 that someone can make a device that can meet the low noise, small size and long endurance requirements that it requires.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHirschberg is hoping to be proved wrong. He hadn\u2019t yet seen the winning GoFly designs, and at this stage, it remains difficult to tell whether anyone can achieve the minimum contest requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the promising features of this phase is contestants\u2019 access to an international group of experts in aircraft design, structure, power, safety and other fields.\u00a0 Boeing explains, \u201cExperts engage with innovators and share their insights in two different ways, as Mentors or Masters. Mentors work directly with innovators in their respective areas of expertise, providing tailored advice on projects and progress. We\u2019re excited to begin Phase II.\u201d\u00a0 (Incidentally, Langelaan led the winning team in 2011\u2019s Green Flight Challenge.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ae.gatech.edu\/news\/2018\/06\/team-hummingbuzz-advances-finals-boeings-gofly-competition\"><strong>Hummingbuzz by Georgia Tech from the United States<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12872\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/gofly-Hummingbuzz-768x768-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another motorcycle-like vehicle, Hummingbuzz features a fully electric, ducted coaxial rotor configuration, with the fuselage on top.\u00a0 This configuration makes one hope that adequate protection for the rider is part of the design.\u00a0 Georgia Tech\u2019s press release notes, \u201c[Alistair] Sequeriahad to quickly learn new and advanced noise software to successfully\u00a0conduct the preliminary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and noise simulations, which ultimately lead\u00a0the team to execute on the winning design.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Vantage by Leap from the United Kingdom<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12873\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/gofly-Leap-10.45.37-AM-768x768-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cVantage is a five-rotor airbike,\u201d pretty much sums up what most publications managed to say for this entry.\u00a0 Reading Boeing\u2019s more detailed material shows that the team is composed of aerospace professionals who\u2019ve worked on projects such as the B2 bomber, serial hybrid power systems, \u201cballistic and heat-resistant materials for operation in extreme conditions,\u201d and \u201ca fuel cell UAV project at Boeing Phantom Works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mamba by Mamba from the United States<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12863\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/gofly-mamba-2-overhead-528x393.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"393\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mamba\u2019s design emphasizes safety, certifiability, and performance.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/business\/technology\/article213280104.html\">According to the <em>Kansas City Star<\/em><\/a>, \u201c\u2019The KU team&#8217;s Mamba\u2026 six-engine hexcopter has a roll cage and is expected to have a training mode for new pilots. Originally the team envisioned a flying motorcycle and a name like \u2018Sky Hog,\u2019&#8221; said Lauren Schumacher, the team&#8217;s leader and a Ph.D. student studying guided munitions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pegasus 1 by Scoop from the United States<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12864\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/gofly-scoop-pegasus-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Pegasus us a Y6 tilt rotor with a wing and a hybrid powertrain with a cruise speed of 70 knots (80mph), according to Boeing.\u00a0 The team seems to consist only of the team captain: \u201cAlex Smolen is a self-taught programmer who has experience creating and running a company. Smolen has built a full stack application and has in-depth experience with the design process. He has a bachelor\u2019s in accounting, and experience in flying and building multicopters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.delta.tudelft.nl\/article\/will-tu-delft-students-make-people-fly\">S1 by Silverwing from the Netherland<\/a>s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12866\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/gofly-Silverwing-1-768x768-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A canard configuration with a motorcycle-like position for the rider, the S1 is powered by two electric motors with ducted rotors. The aircraft makes a 90 degree transition from vertical take-off to horizontal cruise flight.\u00a0 Not to join the chorus of doubters and hecklers, your editor is bothered by the proximity of the rider\u2019s hindquarters to the rotor blades \u2013 especially when one considers this will take off and land with the rider facing straight up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>teTra 3 by Tetra from Japan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12867\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/gofly-tetra2-630x495-528x415.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tetra\u2019s description, as that of Vantage, is terse.\u00a0 \u201cThe teTra 3 is not only efficient enough, but also stylish enough to meet commercial requirement.\u201d\u00a0 The team, though, has a certified project manager and members from Honda, a software company and a major robotics firm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harmony by Texas A&amp;M University from the United States<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12868\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/gofly-harmony-528x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"528\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Harmony is a high-TRL [technology readiness level] compact rotorcraft designed to minimize noise and maximize efficiency, safety, reliability, and flight experience.\u00a0 Comments abound about the pilot\u2019s exposed position and vulnerability if the machine turns into a giant Yard Dart.\u00a0 The contra-rotating propellers are large enough to reduce noise, perhaps, depending on rotational speed.\u00a0 As with most teams, Harmony relies on a multi-discipline group to make it a viable candidate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FlyKart 2 by Trek Aerospace from the United States<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12869\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/gofly-FK2_top-view-528x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"396\" \/><\/p>\n<p>FlyKart 2 is a single-seat, open-cockpit, 10-rotor, ducted fan, electrically-powered, VTOL aircraft.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trekaero.com\/\">Trek has flown FlyKart 1<\/a>, and number 2 is described by its designers as. \u201cA new and improved version of our revolutionary FK1, it has ten of our ducted propellers and is custom designed to meet the challenges&#8217; specifications.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s 9.6 kilowatt-hour battery will allow FK2 to cruise at 45 knots (51.75 mph) for 30 plus minutes.\u00a0 Its screened propellers will help protect pilots and passersby.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Carping through Judgemental Headlines<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40583416\/meet-the-mad-geniuses-building-personal-flying-machines\">Meet the mad geniuses building personal flying machines<\/a>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Possibly Sean Captain, writing for <em>Fast Company<\/em>, did not pen the headline, editors often tackling that clickbait-luring task.\u00a0 His writing seems more thoughtful, including this hopeful note from GoFly\u2019s co-founder.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s been a convergence of all of these breakthrough technologies that make\u00a0this the first moment in time where we have the ability to make people fly,&#8217; says Gwen Lighter, who dreamed up the <u>GoFly prize<\/u>, recruited Boeing to bankroll it, and now serves as CEO. Many of the advances come from the world of drones\u2013high-efficiency motors, high-capacity batteries, and cheap navigation and stabilizing technologies that keep even newbies on course and out of danger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Captain includes some rational voices less enthusiastic than Ms. Lighter.\u00a0 \u201c\u2019Batteries have much less energy density than liquid fuel,\u2019 says Mike Hirschberg, executive director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vtol.org\/\">Vertical Flight Society<\/a>, one of GoFly\u2019s partner organizations. Depending on the technologies, fuel could pack on the order of 50 times more energy per unit of weight, he reckons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Captain returns to the Mad Scientist name calling with this description of Larry Page and Sebastian Thrun, not even entrants in the competition.\u00a0 \u201cGoogle co-founder and aviation fanatic Larry Page recruited members of AeroVelo for his stealthy electric plane startup, Kitty Hawk. The company\u2019s CEO, Sebastian Thrun, founded Google\u2019s mad-scientist innovation division and also led Stanford\u2019s 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge-winning autonomous car team. Kitty Hawk is one of many recent examples of competitions propelling cash-strapped innovators into big-business opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018\/06\/14\/boeing-gofly-20000-ten-wacky-personal-flyer-designs\/\"><strong>\u201cBoeing gave $20,000 to these ten wacky personal flyer designs\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Engadget<\/em> stopped at the headline, giving a short, but restrained bit of copy to the news.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cBoeing asked for quiet jet packs but got a bunch of air motorcycles\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> took aim at Boeing\u2019s supposed intent and seems to premise an ostensibly disappointing outcome.<\/p>\n<h3>Further Considerations<\/h3>\n<p>Engadget looks at the various hurdles still to be leaped.\u00a0 &#8220;But there could still be social hurdles, like noise. Prize criteria specify that loudness, from 50 feet away, not exceed 85 decibels. That\u2019s about as loud as a diesel truck going by at the same distance and similar speed. Lauren Schumacher estimates that Mamba will put out only 67 dB, about the sound of a noisy dishwasher. Would that satisfy neighbors?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cities are also struggling with congestion from ever-more motorized devices, including electric scooters and skateboards. Studies show that car services like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/transportation\/2017\/10\/the-ride-hailing-effect-more-cars-more-trips-more-miles\/542592\/\">Lyft and Uber may ultimately put more vehicles on the road<\/a>. Commercial drone flights are also on the rise in urban areas, thanks to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/40577148\/flying-drones-legally-gets-easier-in-much-of-the-u-s-today\">new business-friendly policies from the FAA<\/a>. And flying cars are coming. Uber wants to start tests in 2020 and commercial service by 2023.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;However, the FAA regulates aircraft a lot more strictly than cities can regulate scooters,&#8217; says Hirschberg.
