{"id":11818,"date":"2018-07-10T14:45:33","date_gmt":"2018-07-10T21:45:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11818"},"modified":"2018-07-18T06:58:07","modified_gmt":"2018-07-18T13:58:07","slug":"equator-p2-makes-first-runway-hops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/equator-p2-makes-first-runway-hops\/","title":{"rendered":"Equator P2 Makes First Runway Hops"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>The Culmination of Eight Years\u2019 Effort<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Tomas\u00a0Br\u00f8dreskift, his father and a dedicated team of volunteers have been working on a nearly no-budget, eight-year project to build a cutting-edge technology hybrid amphibian aircraft.\u00a0 This past week, Equator P2\u2019s wheels left the runway, twice on each of two days.\u00a0 The team plans a full flight around the airport traffic pattern in the next few days.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First Runway Test Flight\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/82J7gJ_7c4w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although brief, the runway runs demonstrated the hand control\u2019s proper operation, similar to the hands-only controls used on human-powered aircraft.\u00a0 In that instance, the pilot\u2019s legs are busy pedaling, obviating the need for manual operation only.<\/p>\n<p>In the Equator\u2019s case, Tomas wanted simplified controls to make his aircraft a more desirable machine for future buyers.\u00a0 He is, after all, an industrial designer, creating beautiful things that would otherwise be mundane.\u00a0 He works with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicfactory.ch\/industrial\/\">Classic Factory Automotive and Industrial Design,<\/a> putting the \u201clook\u201d in exotic electric sports cars, bicycle frames, coffee makers, and designer watches, among objects.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12904\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12904\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12904\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Equator-P2-flight-528x307.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"307\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12904\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Test pilot Eskil Amdal makes one of several runway hops to test hand controls, airplane handling<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><strong>Crowd Funding for Equator<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Self-funding construction for the past eight years meant slow progress, although still exceptional for a literally garage-based project.\u00a0 The flight test prototype is truly hand-made, often by\u00a0Br\u00f8dreskifts\u2019 personal craft or guidance. \u00a0\u00a0Tomas has turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seedrs.com\/equatoraircraft\"><em>Seedrs.com<\/em><\/a>, a European investment and crowd-funding operation, to help expedite future development of the airplane and its production.\u00a0 Unfortunately for American supporters of the project, Seedrs is off-limits to people on this side of the pond.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Equator Pitch Summer 2018\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H4G6UrQaamE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Tomas will be able to return to earlier, even grander ideas.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tuvie.com\/seastol-vlj-sea-short-take-off-and-landing-very-light-jet\/\">His SeaSTOL personal jet (then called a Very Light Jet \u2013 VLJ)<\/a> was an eight-passenger amphibian that would be a delight in which to fly and check out fjords and ocean-front property.\u00a0 His comments on the project indicate he was even then being more practical with the P2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SeaSTOL VLJ project was done whilst studying Industrial Design in Essen, Germany in 2008. But it has never been published at extent to date, and still remains a dream to be built in the future. Today I am managing a small aircraft company in Norway called Equator Aircraft Norway SA. We are developing a smaller seaplane called the EQP2. The SeaSTOL VLJ is still on our design table, and I hope to realize it.
