{"id":11821,"date":"2018-07-11T17:20:11","date_gmt":"2018-07-12T00:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11821"},"modified":"2018-07-11T17:30:31","modified_gmt":"2018-07-12T00:30:31","slug":"from-the-cradle-to-the-breakthrough-battery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/from-the-cradle-to-the-breakthrough-battery\/","title":{"rendered":"From the CRADLE to the Breakthrough \u00a0Battery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hyundai, the Korean carmaker turning increasingly to electric vehicles, has teamed with Ionic Materials, a Massachusetts-based battery developer to work on an innovative solid-state battery.\u00a0 Ionic\u2019s solid polymer electrolyte technology promised to improve battery safety and performance.\u00a0 Liquid electrolytes are often blamed for disastrous battery fires, so the search for a solid-state alternative is one way to counter the problem.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11826 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lithium-battery-fires-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"630\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lithium-battery-fires-1.jpg 630w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lithium-battery-fires-1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lithium-battery-fires-1-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/lithium-battery-fires-1-528x528.jpg 528w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cradleinc.com\/\">Hyundai\u2019s CRADLE\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundaimotorgroup.com\/MediaCenter\/News\/Press-Releases\/hmc-CRADLE-180710.hub#.W0aZhtUzrhe\">(<\/a>Center for Robotic-Augmented Design in Living Experiences), &#8220;corporate venturing and open innovation business,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundaimotorgroup.com\/MediaCenter\/News\/Press-Releases\/hmc-CRADLE-180710.hub#.W0aZhtUzrhe\">is investing in Ionic<\/a> to gain access to the company\u2019s technology, which also supports lithium-ion cells with no cobalt in their cathodes.\u00a0 Reducing or eliminating cobalt in their batteries may be a major incentive for Hyundai.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/timtreadgold\/2018\/03\/07\/an-electric-car-boom-excite-australias-mining-tycoons-but-there-may-be-a-cobalt-problem\/#6cef515b3b42\"><em>Forbes<\/em> reports<\/a>, \u201cCarmakers, such as Germany&#8217;s BMW, and electronic gadget makers, such as Apple, are scouring the world for supplies of cobalt, a rare metal that has tripled in price over the past year to $80,000 a ton, with 60% of global supply coming from the bloody Democratic Republic of Congo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Environmental \u201cpoints\u201d for making clean-energy automobiles may be overshadowed by bad publicity related to \u201cblood minerals,\u201d much like the negative appearance in wearing \u201cblood diamonds\u201d or other conflict gems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expected Benefits of Solid-State Batteries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ionic Materials cites the following as advantages of their solid-state battery technology:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inherent Safety: Eliminates safety issues with liquid electrolytes.<\/li>\n<li>Higher Performance: Enables higher energy anodes and cathodes.<\/li>\n<li>Lower Cost: Reduces battery cost through less expensive chemistries and manufacturing (including the elimination of cobalt).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201c&#8217;Ionic Materials\u2019 breakthrough technology could significantly improve battery technology today,&#8217; said John Suh, vice president of Hyundai CRADLE. &#8216;We are always looking for ways to ensure our cars provide the highest level of clean and efficient solutions.
