autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The airplane looks a bit like a single-seat Vahana, Airbus\u2019s two-seat air taxi currently under test in eastern Oregon.\u00a0 Where Vahana is just beginning flight tests, BlackFly has over 12,000 aerial miles carrying a payload in 1,400 flights.\u00a0 BlackFly has gone through 40,000 cycles on its power system, equivalent to 25 circumnavigations of the earth, according to the company.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12926\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12926\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12926\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/opener-blackfly-generations-528x298.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"298\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12926\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Four generations of BlackFly, showing its evolution over the last seven years<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Three fail-safe flight control systems manage redundant motors, elevens,\u00a0and batteries.\u00a0 Batteries are arranged in a distributed, isolated system.<\/p>\n<p>Pilots are constrained and protected from doing anything too silly.\u00a0 Software provides control limits within the design\u2019s flight envelope and the potential to remain within (or outside) designated geofences.\u00a0 If one gets into trouble, a return-to-home button, soft landing assistance, a \u201clow-power glide mode,\u201d and ballistic parachute recovery can save the day.<\/p>\n<p>Its outrunner-type motors were apparently developed by Marcus Leng, Opener\u2019s founder and CEO.\u00a0 How are they significantly different or better than commercial off-the-shelf items found at hobby shops?<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Worthwhile TV Report<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Flying car innovator believes he can finally make it a reality\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DhKTCbbqbaE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Two reporters do a knowledgeable and professional job of presenting the machine and the case for it.\u00a0 John Blackstone, a long-time technology reporter for CBS and anchor Reena Ninan give the background and some responsible assessments of what the team at Opener has accomplished.\u00a0 They even visit the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, California \u2013 one of your editor\u2019s favorite places.\u00a0 It\u2019s nice to see a non-judgemental, sober review of this emerging technology.<\/p>\n<p>Note Blackstone\u2019s startle reaction when the motor fires up, and the reading which shows 108 pounds of thrust (your editor\u2019s guess as to what is being measured).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A Board of Adventurers<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Marcus Leng<\/strong>, the founder and CEO of Openers, earned a recreational pilot\u2019s license when he was 18.\u00a0 He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1983 with a mechanical engineering degree and worked until 1986 in multinational corporations.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ericmack\/2018\/07\/12\/opener-blackfly-wants-to-be-vtol-flying-car-you-can-buy-next-year\/#6e9323ad4216\"><em>Forbes<\/em> quotes him as having big plans.<\/a>\u00a0 \u201cOpener is re-energizing the art of flight with a safe and affordable flying vehicle that can free its operators from the everyday restrictions of ground transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bigthink.com\/experts\/alan-eustace\"><strong>Alan Eustace<\/strong><\/a> did more than intellectualize as a Senior Vice President at Google \u2013 he actualized the world\u2019s highest parachute jump. \u00a0A great deal like BlackFly, his jump equipment was minimalist, just him in a special space suit with all necessary life support equipment and a release mechanism to separate him from the large balloon that carried him aloft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ed Lu<\/strong>, advisor to the project, \u201cflew on two Space Shuttle flights, one Soyuz flight, and served a 6 month mission aboard the International Space Station. Since retiring from NASA, Ed has worked at Google as Program Manager for Advanced Projects, and at Liquid Robotics.\u201d\u00a0 His flight experience, coupled with a degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University and doctoral degree in applied physics from Stanford University give him a unique ability to help on different aspects of BlackFly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ken Sasine<\/strong>, also an advisor and President of Precision Wings LLC, a flight test consulting firm, brings a wealth of experience.\u00a0 With time in over 100 different aircraft and 16,000 hours flight time, Ken can evaluate the complete flight spectrum of this unique design.\u00a0 He is a graduate of the USAF Test Pilot School and former instructor at USAF and National Test Pilot Schools.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u00a0Is There a Future for Such Personal Aerial Vehicles?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As a possible feature bonus, BlackFly can be trailered on a solar power\/hangar platform for off-grid electric flying.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pivotal | BlackFly Features\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l53JKod9yfA?start=58&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As exciting as the videos are, and as well-developed as this product is, it still costs some variable SUV price.\u00a0 Potential customers will balk at different price points from a $35,000 SUV to a $150,000 SUV.\u00a0 It\u2019s small enough that perhaps 3D printing could crank out wings and fuselage tubs at a reasonable cost in sufficient quantities to create a mass market.\u00a0 Certainly, the motors are comparable to model aircraft units in the $300 to $1,000 range.\u00a0 Even with the costs of controllers being roughly equal to motors, eight motors won\u2019t cost over $16,000.\u00a0 Batteries are still a big part of the costs here.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12925\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12925\" class=\"size-large wp-image-12925\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/BlackFly-OPENER-Personal-eVTOL-1-528x249.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"249\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BlackFly&#8217;s low energy consumption and low noise may help offset the high initial cost and make it a plausible PAV<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Depending on how it\u2019s made, the airframe seems simple and light enough to be made inexpensively.\u00a0 The magic, of course, is in the control system, which has to be a custom hardware\/software offering.\u00a0 But one sees hobbyists creating home-made machines that provide stability and multi-motor control from commodity-level electronics.\u00a0 Will redundant cheap components allow a level of reliability that will ensure safe passage?<\/p>\n<p>Aircraft, because of small production runs, are expensive and must function perfectly all the time.\u00a0 That helps make them more expensive, pound-per-pound, than toasters or dishwashers.\u00a0 Still, one wonders if efficient manufacturing techniques can bring the costs down.<\/p>\n<p>BlackFly, one of many multi-motor, multi-rotor personal aerial vehicles rising over the horizon, is a precursor of even more such products sure to appear soon.\u00a0 They have a gutsy Board and a great sales pitch.\u00a0 Their success will lead to increased interest in the long-hoped-for PAV.<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Fjust-for-openers-blackfly%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none; overflow:hidden; width:500px; height:80px;\" allowTransparency=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Seven-Year Stealth Project Opener doesn\u2019t sound like the name of an airplane company, and BlackFly doesn\u2019t sound like a very charming name for an airplane.\u00a0 Maybe that\u2019s how the developers of an eight-motor personal flying machine got away with it for so long.
