{"id":11893,"date":"2018-09-06T16:18:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-06T23:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11893"},"modified":"2018-09-06T16:18:00","modified_gmt":"2018-09-06T23:18:00","slug":"elektra-solar-launches-hale-with-autonomous-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/elektra-solar-launches-hale-with-autonomous-control\/","title":{"rendered":"Elektra Solar Launches HALE with Autonomous Control"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Birgit Wei\u00dfenbach of Elektra Solar GmbH and PC-Aero announced \u201cThe world\u2019s strongest multifunctional solar-electric HALE aerial vehicle \u2013 the Elektra Two Solar: [with] &#8220;Take-off, flight and tough-down&#8221; successfully completed with [its] own autopilot system<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13072\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13072\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13072\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/PC-Aero-in-flight-528x374.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"374\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elektra Solar Two returning from its successful mission<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We usually think of HALE (High Altitude Long Endurance) aircraft as being huge, sun-eclipsing things like AeroVironment\u2019s flying wings or Boeing\u2019s Phantom Eye.\u00a0 These require large support systems and ground crews, much like the team that chased Solar Impulse around the world.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Second Flight for Boeing Phantom Eye Hydrogen-Powered UAV\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PXrmE_4zxbI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elektra-solar.com\/\">Elektra Solar GmbH<\/a>, a joint venture combining PC-Aero GmbH and Elektra UAS GmbH, uses aircraft designed by Calin Gologen, head of PC-Aero, and computer technology from Dr. Ing. Habil. Konstantin Kondak.\u00a0 Since October, 2009 he headed a key research area, Flying Robots at DLR\u2019s Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich.<\/p>\n<p>Their collaboration led to two svelte HALEs, the smaller Elektra One Solar (a veteran of a solar-powered Alpine crossing) and the larger Elektra Two Solar.\u00a0 This airplane is also the basis for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarstratos.com\/en\/plane\/\">Raphael Domjan\u2019s SolarStratos<\/a>, intended to take adventurous souls to 75,000 feet, close to the Perlan\u2019s record altitude.\u00a0 Last week\u2019s flight of the Two was a demonstration of the new redundant autopilot system, which successfully completed several autonomous flights without human intervention, even though a safety pilot was aboard.\u00a0 Elektra Solar reports, \u201cWith no problems and in less than ideal weather conditions, take-offs and landings took place. During the flights various parameters and modes of the whole system were tested.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13073\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13073\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13073\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/PC-Aero-on-ground-528x374.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"374\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On the ground, Elektra Solar Two shows small bubble canopy for safety pilot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Konstantin explains, &#8220;We have taken a giant step towards the stratosphere and are very optimistic that we will be able to fly in a short time with our next aircraft at altitudes up to 20 [kilometers].<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not yet able to achieve this goal with the current aircraft. However, in order to achieve this, we followed new paths in the manufacture of the next aircraft in process and production technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The firm, located in the Bavarian city of Landsberg am Lech \u201cmanufactures manned and unmanned aircraft for scientific and commercial tasks.\u201d\u00a0 The company claims independence from suppliers, being able to make everything in-house, with 100-percent value added.\u00a0 Development of control algorithms and systems receives support from \u201cclose cooperation\u201d with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dlr.de\/rm\/en\/desktopdefault.aspx\/tabid-8017\">DLR Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elektra Solar GmbH\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4NTm88Ob8fU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Both \u201caircraft are characterized by long flight times and are able to carry payloads of up to 100 kilograms.\u00a0 The double-redundant, solar-electric propulsion system is powered by the sun.\u201d\u00a0 Motors are arranged on a single output shaft with one or both able to provide power at any time.\u00a0 Full power is 32 kilowatts.<\/p>\n<p>The craft are served by dual redundancy on the motors and triple redundancy on the control system.\u00a0 This ensures systems reliability and the \u201crobust construction of the structure\u2026 allows uncomplicated and economical operation of the systems.\u201d\u00a0 Combined with virtually noiseless operation and the \u201chighly efficient \u2018Energy-Saving-Concept\u2019\u2026 supported by the latest state of the art extremely powerful solar cells,\u201d the airplane should be able to meet its objectives of \u201cday and night flight missions for a wide variety of economical applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"facebook_like\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=http%3A%2F%2Fcafe.foundation%2Fblog%2Felektra-solar-launches-hale-with-autonomous-control%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=500&amp;action=like&amp;font=segoe+ui&amp;colorscheme=light&amp;height=80\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;
