{"id":11903,"date":"2018-09-21T14:31:11","date_gmt":"2018-09-21T21:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11903"},"modified":"2018-09-21T14:31:11","modified_gmt":"2018-09-21T21:31:11","slug":"jetstream-cargo-gliders-colorado-to-china-in-three-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/jetstream-cargo-gliders-colorado-to-china-in-three-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Jetstream Cargo Gliders \u2013 Colorado to China in Three Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just as Richard Starke was explaining to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esoaring.com\/\">Experimental Soaring Association<\/a> attendees at this year\u2019s Western Workshop how his proposed stratospheric cargo glider program would work, some multi-tasker checking his tablet shouted, \u201cPerlan\u2019s reached 76,000 feet!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s concept of launching cargo gliders that would ride the jet stream between continents was suddenly validated before an audience that a few minutes before might have been dazzled and even skeptical of his proposal.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perlanproject.org\/blog\/first-ever-tow-egrett\">Perlan\u2019s tows behind the recently recruited Grob Egret turboprop towplane<\/a> made 10,000 feet in 10 minutes a time-to-climb reality, and tows to 40,000 feet allowed rapid exploration of developing air masses over the Patagonian mountains.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tow of Perlan 2 behind Egrett above the Andes Mountains\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9PwQZDqw9PA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The idea of flying large, cargo-carrying gliders goes back to at least Word War Two, with flotillas of Waco CG-4s and British Horsas descending on the French mainland on D-Day. The Russians even had a glider large enough to carry a tank into battle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13113\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/bowlus-cg7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13113\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13113\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/bowlus-cg7-528x363.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"363\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13113\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bowlus CG-7 designed by co-designer of Spirit of St. Louis was large WW II cargo carrier<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hawley Bowlus, who had been in on the design of the Spirit of St. Louis and who taught the Lindbergh\u2019s to fly sailplanes at the Tehachapi gliderport where the Workshop is held, was represented by the presence of Jeff Byard\u2019s lovely Baby Albatross in the hangar.\u00a0 Bowlus designed a large CG-7 cargo glider for the war effort.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Military C-47 Picks Up Glider\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/68O_ZHCOjwk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These historical antecedents and present-day realities give credibility to the potential Richard\u2019s ideas might have.\u00a0 The atmospheric realities are now well documented and increasingly understood.\u00a0 Richard\u2019s depiction of the manner in which jet streams are formed and predicted with some accuracy could make high altitude cargo gliders a scheduled delivery system.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13114\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/jet-stream.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13114\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13114\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/jet-stream-528x394.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Earth&#8217;s wind patterns, schematic view.
