{"id":11920,"date":"2018-10-04T22:55:23","date_gmt":"2018-10-05T05:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=11920"},"modified":"2018-10-04T22:55:23","modified_gmt":"2018-10-05T05:55:23","slug":"oxis-energy-hits-a-lithium-sulfur-battery-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/oxis-energy-hits-a-lithium-sulfur-battery-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Oxis Energy Hits a Lithium-Sulfur Battery High"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That near-mythical 10X\u00a0 (of current lithium cells&#8217; energy density) battery hangs out there on the distant horizon, promising automobiles that can exceed 1,000 miles range, or light aircraft that can carry four at Cessna-like distances.\u00a0 Right now, we have two-place trainers good for an hour\u2019s laps around the circuit, and the hope for improvements soon.\u00a0 OXIS Energy, a UK-based company, has achieved 425 Watt-hours per kilogram at the cell level, and looks to go higher in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lithium-Sulfur \u2013 A Worthy Alternative?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Promoters of lithium-sulfur batteries suggest their products have several desirable characteristics and performance boosts that may transcend the limits of lithium-ion cells.\u00a0 Sion Power, for instance, claims availability of their <a href=\"https:\/\/sionpower.com\/products\/\">Licerion battery<\/a> with an even better 500 Watt-hours per kilogram and 1,000 Watt-hours per liter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13162\" style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/oxis-energy_graph.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13162\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13162\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/oxis-energy_graph.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">OXIS Energy&#8217;s graph of current and future performance for their lithium-sulfur batteries<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the same track, OXIS Energy has announced they have a demonstrated 425 Wh\/kg cell, expected to rise to 450 Wh\/kg by the end of the year and to 500 by the end of 2019.\u00a0 These numbers, as those for Sion\u2019s cells, are about double or greater those for the best lithium-ion batteries now being sold.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/oxis-energy-425-wh-kg-new-battery-cell\/\"><em>Inside EVs<\/em><\/a> reports, &#8220;On the module level, energy densities now stand at\u00a0<strong>300 Wh\/kg<\/strong>, but by the end of 2019, OXIS Energy hopes to reach\u00a0<strong>400 Wh\/kg<\/strong>.&#8221; (Their bolding)<\/p>\n<p>OXIS\u2019 16-Amp-hour pouch cells are currently available for High-Altitude Pseudo Satellite use and Sion\u2019s batteries have been used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/defence\/uav\/zephyr.html\">Airbus\u2019 Zephyr HAPS program.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>OXIS works along several development lines, and CEO Huw W. Hampson-Jones explains their direction and future.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Interview with Huw W. clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Note that battery management systems, packing, and wiring for these cells will reduce the total capacity per kilogram, although they should still be more potent per pound than their lithium-ion competitors.\u00a0 Several other factors come into play that add to lithium-sulfur cells\u2019 attractiveness.\u00a0 The cells can be fully discharged without damage, for instance, something that would shorten the life of a lithium-ion battery significantly.\u00a0 They have a broader temperature tolerance range than lithium-ion.\u00a0 And they can withstand nail penetration without bursting into flames while continuing to deliver their rated voltage.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lithium Sulfur Cell Nail Test vs Li-ion\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iUpwtKGAK0Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>An even more brutal test pits an OXIS battery pack against a NATO 5.56 mm round (roughly equivalent to a .22 caliber long rifle shell).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"OXIS Energy Li-S Bullet Test\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L9whgQXgERc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
