A wingspan larger than the largest 747\u2019s and a weight no greater than a Smart Car\u2019s (around 1,500 pounds) means this airplane will be slow and frail.\u00a0 A carbon fiber tube structure covered by lightweight\u00a0Tedlar\u2122 resembles the construction of Solar Impulse, but without the bulk of carrying a pilot.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13312\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Odysseus_CapabilityImage_838x250_persistence.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13312\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13312\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Odysseus_CapabilityImage_838x250_persistence-528x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Odysseus, larger in span than a 747 and as light as a Smart Car, will stay aloft indefinitely<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since its antecedent was the world record holding distance champion in human-powered aircraft, the manner of flight is no surprise.\u00a0 Its intended altitude is.\u00a0 Odysseus takes it to the stratosphere.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the latest revelation in a thirty-year exploration of low-powered, extreme-endurance aircraft.\u00a0 Before he founded Aurora, John Langford led a group of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) students in a four-year program that developed three human-powered craft \u2013 the Daedalus series.\u00a0 In its final iteration, Daedalus set the still-extant world record for human-powered flight distance, 72 miles emulating the flight of its mythical namesake between Santorini and Sicily.\u00a0 The airplane suffered structural failure just yards from its destination, dumping its pilot into the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13309\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/eco-eagle-1987.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13309\" class=\"wp-image-13309 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/eco-eagle-1987-528x411.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"411\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michelob Eco Eagle over Roger Dry Lake during 1987-1988 test flight. This was prototype of Daedalus which would set world record of 72 miles<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Aurora Flight Sciences took out the pilot and replaced him with an array of electronics enabling the Solar Eagle to fly extended reconnaissance missions.\u00a0 In the quest to make the missions perpetual, Aurora continued to expand its aerodynamic and solar-powered fleet.\u00a0 The latest and larger Odysseus is another milestone in persistence.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ODYSSEUS - Global Reach, Airborne for Months, Powered by the Sun\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eErLcDqINyE?start=2&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Langford explains, \u201cAurora was founded by the idea that technology and innovation can provide powerful solutions to tough problems that affect all of humankind. Odysseus was an idea born out of Daedalus that is now a real solution to advancing the important research around climate change and other atmospheric chemistry problems. \u00a0Odysseus offers persistence like no other solar aircraft of its kind, which is why it is such a capable and necessary platform for researchers.\u00a0 Odysseus will indeed change the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13319\" style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ODYSSEUS-FUSELAGE-FRONT.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13319\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13319\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ODYSSEUS-FUSELAGE-FRONT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"502\" height=\"335\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13319\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carbon tube structure is visible though Tedlar covering. Structure is truss-type like Solar Impulse or classic era light aircraft<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Aurora points to Key Enablers that will guarantee Odysseus\u2019 success:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c1. Odysseus can persistently and autonomously remain on station. This enables communication and data gathering over a specific location. No other solar aircraft offers this capability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c2. Odysseus has a greater year-round global operating zone than any other vehicle in its class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c3. Odysseus can carry a larger payload than any other aircraft in development or production in its\u00a0class. This enables more missions and better resulting data quality from each mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c4. Odysseus can be deployed at a fraction of the cost of a satellite and can spend dramatically\u00a0more time aloft than a conventional UAV.
