{"id":12044,"date":"2019-02-15T15:37:47","date_gmt":"2019-02-15T22:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12044"},"modified":"2019-02-15T15:37:47","modified_gmt":"2019-02-15T22:37:47","slug":"big-events-and-numbers-for-bye-aerospace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/big-events-and-numbers-for-bye-aerospace\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Events and Numbers for Bye Aerospace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bye Aerospace has four big current projects, with the Sunflyer 2 at the top of the development and sales curve.\u00a0 Teaming with Siemens, Bye Aerospace is now flying Sunflyer 2 with one of their 57 pound SP70D motors producing a 90 kilowatt peak rating (120 HP), and continuous power up to 70kW (94 HP).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sun Flyer 2 Completes First Flight with Siemens Electric Propulsion Motor\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W0TKoq-b3nA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Bye anticipates that Sunflyer 2 will be, \u201cthe first FAA-certified, practical, all-electric airplane to serve the flight training and general aviation markets.\u201d\u00a0 George Bye, the company\u2019s founder and CEO has been working with Agency for several years on devising rules for electric aircraft certification.<\/p>\n<p>T<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainonline.com\/aviation-news\/general-aviation\/2018-07-25\/sunflyer-electric-trainer-pitched-pilot-shortage-solution\">he need for 790,000 new pilots in the next few decades will drive the need for training aircraft<\/a>.\u00a0 An aging fleet with an average age of 48 years for the Pipers and Cessnas on flight school tarmacs requires a newer, more modern series of training planes to replace them.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13567\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Sun-Flyer-Prototype-with-Siemens-Motor-Ground-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13567\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13567\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Sun-Flyer-Prototype-with-Siemens-Motor-Ground-1-528x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunflyer 2 on February 8, 2019 during first test flight with a Siemens motor<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sunflyer\u2019s impressive sales numbers (a recent order from the Aspen Flying Club for 30 Sunflyer 2s raised the total to over 130 worldwide) hit 220 when including Sunflyer 4\u2019s numbers.\u00a0 Its operating costs \u2013 $14.00 per hour compared to a Cessna 172\u2019s $88.31 \u2013 benefit from lack of fuel costs -$44.00 per hour for the 172 vs. $3.00 per hour to recharge the Sunflyer for another hour aloft. Lower maintenance costs come from the lower inspections bills ($22.40 for the Cessna &#8211; $2.40 for the Sunflyer), and maintenance charges (oil changes, ignition and accessory maintenance add $11.91 per hour to the Cessna\u2019s total). \u00a0\u00a0The only \u201cwash\u201d between the two trainers would come from $10.00 per hour replacement cost for the Cessna\u2019s engine vs. the $8.00 per hour replacement cost for the Sunflyer\u2019s batteries.\u00a0 We hope reductions in operating costs get passed on to new pilots, encouraging the growth of a new customer base.<\/p>\n<p>The maximum rate of climb of the aircraft is 1,150fpm, while the normal speed varies between 55 knots (63.25 mph) and 120 knots (138 mph) .\u00a0 The aircraft has a flight endurance of 3.5 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The two-seater variant has a wingspan of 11.58m (37.98 feet), wing area of 129feet\u00b2 (12meters\u00b2), cabin width of 1.16 meters (45.65 inches) and glide ratio of 18.5. Bye, Founder and CEO of Bye Aerospace, expressed his gratitude for the investment. \u2018On behalf of our team, my sincere thanks to the SUBARU-SBI Innovation Fund for their vision, their passion for our industry and their belief in electric propulsion,\u2019 he said. \u2018This is Bye Aerospace\u2019s largest individual investment to date.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cItaru Ueda, Manager of the SUBARU-SBI Innovation Fund, said, \u2018We believe Sun Flyer 2 will be the first electric airplane to receive FAR Part 23 type certification.
