{"id":12049,"date":"2019-02-18T22:34:26","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T05:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12049"},"modified":"2019-02-18T22:34:26","modified_gmt":"2019-02-19T05:34:26","slug":"fraport-and-volocopter-implement-infrastructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/fraport-and-volocopter-implement-infrastructure\/","title":{"rendered":"Fraport And Volocopter Implement Infrastructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Helena Treeck, Senior Global PR Manager at Volocopter GmbH, announced that Volocopter and Fraport AG (the managing directorate for Frankfurt Airport) are, \u201cDeveloping concepts for ground infrastructure and operations required for air taxi services at airports.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>A Promising Concept<\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_13574\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/fraport_und_volocopter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13574\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13574\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/fraport_und_volocopter-528x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"352\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13574\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frankfurt Airport, the hub of Fraport services, will include a Voloport to carry airline passengers to and from the airport<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As most of us know from inconvenient experience, getting to and from the airport and fighting our way through the obstacles between us and our assigned seat are frustrating and at times almost demeaning. \u00a0Volocopter probably can\u2019t take away the patdowns and the delay in security lines, but it can release us from the traffic jams on the way to and from the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Volocopter proposes \u201cVolocopter Ports,\u201d a nest of landing platforms, battery swap stations, and boarding and departure zones.\u00a0 Helena reports, \u201cFraport and Volocopter said that they\u2019re exploring on how to integrate air taxis into the existing airport infrastructure at Frankfurt, using what it calls Volocopter Ports, that could link up with existing transportation nodes at the airport. One of Europe\u2019s busiest air hubs, Frankfurt\u00a0handled over 69 million passengers last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2012 and backed by Daimler (one of its investors), Volocopter is actively testing its 18-rotor \u201cmulticopter\u201d in Dubai and flew Intel CEO Brian Krzanich as its first passenger at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.\u00a0 As if hoisting a CEO skyward is not enough, Volocopter flew a Crown Prince in 2017.\u00a0 \u201cThe eye in the sky is well and alive in Dubai. Just yesterday,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2017\/09\/26\/dubai-volocopter-passenger-drone-test\/\">German company Volocopter, funded by automaker Daimler, successfully tested its flying taxi prototype<\/a>\u00a0by transporting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/aerial\/14642\/volocopter-passenger-drone-successfully-takes-dubais-crown-prince-on-5-minute-flight\">Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed 200 meters into the air for five entire minutes<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Some Resistance<\/h4>\n<p>This somewhat daring approach to testing and marketing may be paying off, with a just slightly lower public interest in \u201cflying cars\u201d than in driverless cars, according to Allianze Global Assistance USA.\u00a0 Despite the polls showing some reluctance to adopt the new technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/fraport-volocopter-partner-flying-taxis-frankfurt-airport-165928899.html\">Helena Treeck told Yahoo Finance UK<\/a> that her company believes flying taxis will be operating even sooner than that.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Upwardly mobile: Efforts to expand flight for all\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QNWdSoxigIs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Backing those findings, \u201cFlying taxis could be plying the urban skies in Germany within five years, according to a recent study by Horvath &amp; Partners consultancy. It predicts that air taxis will be operating on fixed routes in big cities \u2018as early as 2025.\u2019\u00a0They add that their surveys show people have a higher acceptance of autonomous passenger drones than of self-driving cars.<\/p>\n<p>Anke Giesen, Fraport executive board member for operations, chimes in.\u00a0 \u201cAutonomous flying will fundamentally change aviation in the years to come. We want to be the first airport in Europe to harness the potential of electric air taxis in partnership with pioneer Volocopter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mutual press release explains that Frankfurt wants to pioneer in this enterprise.\u00a0 \u2018Fraport is a globally active airport manager with many years of expertise in airport operations \u2013 particularly in ground infrastructure, ground handling, and terminal and passenger services. Fraport can also leverage its extensive experience in unmanned flying. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innofrator.com\/en\/projekt-fradrones-2020-ready-for-take-off\/\">Via its FraDrones program<\/a>, Fraport has already tested various scenarios for using drones for operational purposes. \u201c<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13576\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Volo_Hub_Battery_Pack_Swap.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13576\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13576\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Volo_Hub_Battery_Pack_Swap-528x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13576\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volo Hub battery swap station, able to support 30-second departure intervals<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Comng Challenges<\/h4>\n<p>Florian Reuter, CEO of Volocopter GmbH,\u00a0supports Fraport\u2019s concept: \u201cProviding the ideal connection between the city center and the airport poses a huge challenge for the world\u2019s major cities.
