{"id":12057,"date":"2019-03-01T15:30:27","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T22:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12057"},"modified":"2019-03-01T15:30:27","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T22:30:27","slug":"is-ionic-propulsion-plausible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/is-ionic-propulsion-plausible\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Ionic Propulsion Plausible?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Ethan Krauss responds to MIT&#8217;s Ionic Flyer Coverage<\/h4>\n<p>There seems to be great interest in ionic propulsion.\u00a0 After we published <a href=\"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/mits-ionic-flyer-solid-state-all-the-way\/\">\u201cMIT\u2019s Ionic Flyer \u2013 Solid State All the Way,\u201d<\/a> our editorial offices (otherwise known as your editor\u2019s kitchen) received a comment from Ethan Krauss, who corrected the historical record.\u00a0 He explains, &#8220;MIT was NOT &#8220;the first ion propelled aircraft of any kind to carry their power supply, as their video and paper say.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t use less voltage, they are not more efficient, they are not the largest. Size was not the limit in the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ionix-planegif.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13612\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/ionix-planegif-528x297.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" \/>Click on image to see video of MIT&#8217;s first flights.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are the second in the world to be able to claim that they built an ion propelled craft that can carry its power supply. Their craft however, was launched with the assistance of a bungee cord, and large wings thereby reducing the power needed for its 10 second flight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news5cleveland.com\/an-oberlin-man-is-creating-a-flying-machine-straight-out-of-science-fiction?fbclid=IwAR35S25hFIkigsZt-_KfD6mVrPWjjmjyUATUqCJiexM0mbOEEg-OrAFD5J4\">The Cleveland Plain Dealer interviewed Mr. Krauss<\/a> and reported: &#8220;&#8216;Aviation started here in Ohio by two guys that everyone thought were just out of their minds,\u201d Ethan Krauss said.\u00a0\u00a0You could call Krauss, who is an electrical engineer, a modern-day Wright brother&#8230;. If you can move the air downwards without stirring it up too much, then you end up with a very efficient flying machine,&#8217; Krauss said.\u00a0 &#8216;The flying machine has no moving parts, it&#8217;s silent and creates no emissions.\u00a0Possibly be a revolution in flight for light duty applications,&#8217; said Krauss.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Self contained Ion Powered Aircraft with onboard power.  US patent number 10,119,527 filed in 2014.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qdg0_hjuksQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Krauss responded to questions from your editor about whether a larger (say, person carrying)ionic propulsion lifting device could be powered by similar means.\u00a0 \u201cIt is simply not correct to imply that lightweight lifters could carry their power supplies. The whole point is to be able to carry a power supply using ion propulsion. The power to weight ratio was 3 orders of magnitude too low. A larger heavier ion propelled device than MIT&#8217;s was flown in 2003 with an external power supply though.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first solely ion propelled aircraft to carry its power supply, is covered under US Patent No. 10,119,527. This patent covers all ion propelled aircraft that carry their power supplies against gravity since 08\/07\/2014. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electronairllc.org\">Here is the website with videos<\/a> that show it fly for around 2 minutes:&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first and only ion propelled invention ever that can both take off and fly with onboard power, is called the \u2018Self Contained Ion Powered Aircraft.\u2019 \u00a0It is extremely well verified to predate the MIT device with onboard power. It also produces about 20 times as much thrust for its weight. \u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US10119527B2\/en\">The patent,\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0provides details of how Krauss&#8217;s machine is constructed and how it works.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In accordance with an aspect of the present invention, a self-contained ion powered aircraft assembly is provided. The aircraft assembly includes a collector assembly, an emitter assembly, and a control circuit operatively connected to at least the emitter and collector assemblies and comprising a power supply configured to provide voltage to the emitter and collector assemblies. The assembly is configured, such that, when the voltage is provided, the self contained ion powered aircraft provides sufficient thrust to lift each of the collector assembly, the emitter assembly, and the control circuit against gravity.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p-0007\" class=\"style-scope patent-text\">&#8220;In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, an ion powered aircraft assembly includes a collector assembly comprising at least three substantially concentric conductive elements, an emitter assembly, and a control circuit operatively connected to at least the emitter and collector assemblies and comprising a power supply to provide voltage to the emitter and collector assemblies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"p-0008\" class=\"style-scope patent-text\">&#8220;In accordance with yet another aspect of the present invention, an ion powered aircraft assembly includes a collector assembly, an emitter assembly, and a control circuit operatively connected to at least the emitter and collector assemblies. The control circuit includes a power supply configured to provide voltage to the emitter and collector assemblies and a resonant transformer that is continuously driven at an associated resonant frequency to provide a high voltage signal to another component of the control circuit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>For Those Who Want One<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A basic device, powered by an external source, can be assembled from balsa wood and aluminized Mylar film. These have been floating around in laboratories for several years, and are realizable for an enthusiast.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to make an Ion Thruster\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_TYvUdaLjRA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Skip the first minute or so, but then this video gets down to business.<\/p>\n<p>These demonstrations illuminate a reality that ionic propulsion devices can fly, but questions remain as to whether these craft can be made into practical people or cargo carriers.\u00a0 As they grow large enough and carry enough voltage and amperage to lift more substantial loads, will there be a substantial danger in their passage?\u00a0 Things at such light weight and high voltages seem dicey at best.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/techthelead.com\/scientists-create-futuristic-plane-that-flies-via-ion-thrusters\/\"><em>TechtheLead.com<\/em><\/a> reports about MIT&#8217;s efforts: &#8220;One of the first prototypes of the plane fried itself due to its black coating, as black color contains carbon, which conducts electricity. Those previous prototypes only managed to tumble to the ground seconds after being launched.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The latest prototype, this time painted yellow, managed to sail through the air for almost 200 feet at 11 miles per hour (17 kilometers per hour).
