{"id":12063,"date":"2019-03-09T18:34:57","date_gmt":"2019-03-10T01:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/?p=12063"},"modified":"2019-03-09T18:34:57","modified_gmt":"2019-03-10T01:34:57","slug":"goodyear-aero-wheel-sparks-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cafe.foundation\/blog\/goodyear-aero-wheel-sparks-controversy\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodyear AERO Wheel Sparks Controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Goodyear Creates a Flying Tire<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Displayed this week at the Geneva Auto Show, Goodyear\u2019s new AERO wheel is not just rolling stock, but a possible aeronautical device that could propel a \u201cflying car\u201d skyward.\u00a0 Not only could it roll along the freeway, it could navigate the vehicle and choose whether to be in highway or aerial mode.\u00a0 These smart tires could have some problems, though, that could negate their aerial potential, according to some critics.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Goodyear Aero - A two-in-one tire for the autonomous, flying cars of the future.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4vbZlzxpr8M?start=196&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Goodyear\u2019s press release extols the possible virtues of the forward-thinking product: \u201cGENEVA,\u00a0March 5, 2019\u00a0\/PRNewswire\/ &#8212; The Goodyear AERO concept is a two-in-one tire designed for the autonomous, flying cars of the future. This concept would work both as a tire for driving on the road and a &#8216;propeller&#8217; for flying through the sky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chris Hensel, Goodyear\u2019s Chief Technology Officer, explains: &#8220;For over 120 years Goodyear has obsessively pursued innovations and inventions, partnering with the pioneers driving change and discovery in transport.\u00a0 With mobility companies looking to the sky for the answer to the challenges of urban transport and congestion, our work on advanced tire architectures and materials led us to imagine a wheel that could serve both as a traditional tire on the road and as a propulsion system in the sky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4>Loaded with Tech<\/h4>\n<p>Goodyear promotes five functions the \u201cpurely conceptual\u201d AERO wheel can accomplish.<\/p>\n<p>Its multimodal design would enable the wheel to serve as a road-based drive train, absorbing forces from the road in a vertical orientation and act as a lifting propulsor in horizontal orientation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13635\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/goodyear-aero-three-view.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13635\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13635\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/goodyear-aero-three-view-528x226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13635\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Non-pneumatic tire on flexible rims strong enough to act as rotors &#8211; a heady challenge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Its non-pneumatic structure\u2019s spokes would provide support as a wheel and act as fan blades when the tire is tilted.\u00a0 This would require an ability to support the vehicle\u2019s weight in several planes and absorb shocks when on the road.<\/p>\n<p>Goodyear says the wheel would be driven by magnetic propulsion, presumably like a hub motor.<\/p>\n<p>The AERO would use light-based, fiber optic sensors to monitor road conditions, tire wear and the structural integrity of the tire itself.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first smart wheel your editor has encountered, the AERO wheel featuring an embedded artificial intelligence processor that would use data from the vehicle\u2019s on-board sensors and from external vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication.\u00a0 The A.I. processor would select routes and choose whether the vehicle would roll or fly \u2013 a no-brainer for most pilots.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13636\" style=\"width: 538px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/goodyear-flying-car-geneva-motor-show_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x564.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13636\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13636\" src=\"http:\/\/sustainableskies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/goodyear-flying-car-geneva-motor-show_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x564-528x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-13636\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serrated rims might reduce noise from fast-spinning wheel\/rotor. Will these be the loudest things on the road or in the sky?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Goodyear\u2019s Helsel concludes, \u00a0&#8220;Goodyear&#8217;s concepts are meant to trigger a debate on the tires and transport technologies for a new mobility ecosystem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4>Triggering a Debate<\/h4>\n<p>And that seems to have occurred, some fairly controversial views surfacing in the wake of the announcement.\u00a0 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/03\/05\/goodyear-aero-concept-tire-flying-car\/\">Autoblog<\/a><\/em> noted the similarity of Goodyear\u2019s vision to the film <em>Elysium<\/em>, with the least among us living in, \u201dAn above-ground landfill filled with grimy famine and high-tech, or [the well off in] a cyber-Bambi Shangri-La drowning in sunshine, leisure time, and ribbons of glass road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Autoblog<\/em> notes the technical cleverness of the design and concludes, \u201cBring on Elysium already.\u201d\u00a0 How this level of luxury will be made available to all is probably a moot question.\u00a0 Economists suggest we might all have to settle for a little less for everyone to have enough &#8211; but in the current political atmosphere, that might smack of socialism and not economic reality.<\/p>\n<p>David Freeman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/mach\/science\/goodyear-unveils-flying-car-tire-concept-works-ground-air-ncna980066\">writing for NBC News,<\/a> takes a somewhat contrary view on the tech front, interviewing Embry Riddle aeronautical University\u2019s Pat Anderson, director of the Eagle Flight Research Center.\u00a0 Anderson\u00a0 notes the combination wheel\/rotor might reduce parts count, but adds, \u201cCombining things typically results in a lot of compromises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anderson questions the slick transition from ground to aerial transport.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201c&#8217;The downwash from the fast-spinning tire in flight mode might damage things below and possibly cause \u2018horrific\u2019 noise levels,&#8221; Anderson added.
